CARLOS LAUNCHES FIRST ROCK RESIDENCY SHOW IN LAS VEGAS AT THE JOINT AT HARD ROCK HOTEL & CASINO Tickets on sale NOW!
4/1/2009,
Through 2010, The Joint will be the only place west of the Mississippi that a fan can see Santana perform. Titled to pay homage to his most successful body of work to date, Supernatural Santana: A Trip Through the Hits debuts on Wednesday May 27 and features the artists signature fusion sound in a show designed exclusively for the new venue.

The show will feature career-spanning classics, which will include a nostalgic collection of touchstone tracks reaching back as far as the first charting single Jingo (1969) and first Top 10 hit Evil Ways (1970), up through the latest hit, Into The Night (2008). According to Carlos about residency in Vegas:

“It is a great honor for Santana to be the first resident performer at the new Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. Because I still live the principles of the 1960s, and because I’m a hippie at heart, ‘A Trip Through The Hits’ is designed to bring everyone in the audience together as one. I invite you to join our experience – we’ll mix up a little practical spirituality with a rebel-from-the-street vibe, and with lots of incredible music. My wish is for it to be a night that will move you to dance, to cry, to laugh and to feel the totality and fullness of being alive.”

Santana will play approximately 36 shows per year at The Joint, with a show time of 8 p.m. Only the first batch of dates has been announced. Along with May 27 opener, Santana is also playing The Joint May 28, 30-31, June 3-4, 6-7, 10-11, 13-14, August 26-27,29-30, and September 2, and 4-6.

The Joint has just been completely updated and expanded to 4000 seats. Tickets for performances through September go on-sale Wednesday, April 1. Prices range from $70-$299 and can be purchased at the Hard Rock Hotel Box Office, all Ticketmaster locations, online at Ticketmaster.com or at 800-745-3000. This is lame IMO. I saw Santana twice on his last tour and they were off the charts great. The 'Supernatural' stuff is good but overdone already IMO. I would rather see Carlos reach further back into his catalog than to play greatest hit shows.

Well you know the old saying "If the purse is fat, that's where it's at". I'm betting Carlos is getting a "very pretty penny" from the Hard Rock for doing these shows. And what's sweet about it, he doesn't have to tour. I'm betting you're going to start to see more and more artists who been around awhile taking "gigs" like this. Truth be told it ain't all that much different that the ABB doing a month's worth of shows at the Beacon every year.

The Beacon is not the only place they play though. The only way to see Santana for the next two years is to travel to Vegas. In this economy I know I won't be making that trip.

sixty8,

You're missing the point. People like Santana and Gregg, Butch and Jaimoe and many other artists of their generation are pushing or already past sixty. Do you really think these guy STILL want to be playing "one-nighers" acrosss the nation?. I would gurantee if the ABB would be offered a similiar deal with the Hard Rock they would take it. And do so in a heartbeat. And so would the Who, Eagles, Doobie Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Steve Miller and everybody else that's been around for awhile. Wonder how long it'll take before there's a "rock version" of Branson? It's only a matter of time before that happens. Three different shows in one weekend, golf every morning, maybe even a little casino action and buffet dinners all with a AARP discount, oh hell yeah, it'll be a damn goldmine.

But the ABB would not just play their greatest hits or commercial material. I don't fault him for taking the deal and not having to travel, but will he be happy musically to be playing for the Vegas crowd getting comped tickets instead of real Santana fans. I don't see many Santana fans, in this economy, going out of their way to travel all the way to Vegas just to see a show of greatest hits. So he will be playing for the casual fans who probably only know the radio hits or are just their to see a Vegas show. I hope he's making a lot because something tells me it won't be very musically stimulating for Carlos.

I was so hoping this was an April Fool joke when I first heard it... I love Santana - been travelling to see him since the early 70's and have not once been disappointed in one of his shows ... they've always been spiritual experiences for me. Disappointed that there will be no shows in my neighborhood for the next year or so and won't be travelling to Vegas to see him at one of these 36 lounge shows ... no desire what-so-ever to see him in this environment and definitely not for $299???? sixty8, your last post was right on IMO.

So Carlos is doing a Celine Dion. My, how times have changed. A greatest hits show for mega bucks. Well, why not take the $ and laugh all the way to the bank. It's a no-lose proposition for him: doesn't have to hit the road as much and rakes in huge $ from the over-inflated ticket prices.

He has never and will never top his original band or those first three studio albums.

I think he's a smart business man, hooking up with schlock producer Clive Davis, a non-musician business man who knows how to manufacture hit records for his all-star comeback ("Supernatural", etc.). It's all about the Benjamins and Carlos, Davis and his management team know how to make that happen on the recording and live concert ends of things.
