It's funny I've examined all my friend's CD collections and for most of em it's the same thing: CDs and CD cases strewen about the house, CDs out of order, scratched, damaged, CDs missing from the cases, CD covers missing, a heap of CDs littered in the backseat of the car, etc, etc, etc.

Seems like everytime I let someone borrow my CDs they come back with scratches, finger prints on the data side.

Am I the only person who is careful with his CDs????!!?? I always try to keep them clean, free from scratches and damage. All my CDs are neatley places on CD racks, in date order of release. Alphabatized.

So what about you? Is your CD collection organized or a mess???

Like a hurricane was hit by a cyclone inside a tornado....I mean, you would have to see it to believe it. No organization WHATSOEVER.

30+ boxes in the garage in no particular order, piles inside the house, the newer ones closest to the top, older ones buried, strewn all over the couch, floor, bedroom, mantle over the fireplace....and yet, most of the time if I want to get my hands on something, I can find it fairly quick...some quicker than others, if I just bought it, traded for it, or listened to it.

Obviously I'm not married.

Definitely NOT a "Beautiful Mind"....LOL

Great idea for a thread, Barry. Reminds me of an AA meeting where you unburden yourself to a group of strangers.....

But even though they are a mess, I take anal care of my CDs...which is why I don't loan them to ANYONE. Learned that hard lesson when I loaned out 2 Warren Zevon records in college and never saw them again.

And I take meticulous care of my LPs too....all 4000+ of them.

But that's ANOTHER story....

for the most part, my collection is:

a) a mess

however

b) most all are in protective cases (maybe not the right box); none sit about uncovered, 'cause i have a very dusty house - - but they are at least safe until that time comes when the moon is made of green cheese and I organize things around here

.... :sigh: still looking for that ultimate cd-storage solution - something easy, affordable, etc.

No ones mess is worse than mine I'll wager.
Out of cases wrong cases unlabeled.
Literally thousands this way. So many that lots are
just stacked on spindles cds and dvds alike.
There all good so I just grab one and play it.
oh well

I'm sort of in between organized and haphazard. Commercial releases are shelved alphabetically. Trades in the thin boxes, my system needs improvement, shelved or boxed in no real order. I hope someone more organized chimes in.

My record collection was (and still is) arranged with an order that only one with OCD can appreciate.

My CD collection looks like it was organized by Jack the Ripper. I guess the difference is that CD's can be moved from car to car; from my single play CD player to my 100 CD random player for my backyard. Their very portability leads to the disorder.

Re: IPOD. If I have 30 years left I don't want to spend 10 years of it copying my CD's to my computer. Pretty soon, however, I'll have no choice

Me too - along with an indentured servant (preferably female) whose only function would be to keep things in alphabetical order....well, almost the only function....

I am a very disorganized, disorderly, haphazard person. My desk at home and at work is a mess. I can't find anything...

except my music collection. albums and commercial cds are alphabetical, shows alphabetical by date (except recent plays / acquisitions), list updated frequently.

I have so many CD's that it's damn near impossible to keep them in some kind
of order. The only frame of order I have is keeping the artist's individual catalogues
together rather than seperate.

except for those cd's in my car and about 25 in a pile (in cases) next to the cd player, the others are in alphabetical order on shelves on the wall next to the stereo. I'll be honest and say I don't often LISTEN to cd's anymore, so its easy to keep them organized! But I do like having them in some sort of order........

I'm afraid I'm from the OCD end of the spectrum. I have close to 3,000 CDs for which I designed and built a floor to ceiling rack with a nice spot in the middle to display one of my guitars (that's another story - too many guitars, but I have GAS as well!).

They are stored alphabetically and I also have them catalogued in a database.

I also designed and built another storage unit for my books, albums and DVDs that runs floor to ceiling across one wall of a living area in my house. Luckily my wife is very tolerant!

I met this one guy who created an excel database for every CD and DVD he owned, 2000+ DVDs many of these like TV series and he catalogued every episode for this computerized juke box dispenser thing, it was a bit over the top but I am sure very proficient if accurate...

Me I just downloaded (via Itunes) so everything is digitalized and organized. I used to steal music and movies but who knows, now adays I feel its easier to pay for it than to seek it out over torrents and peer to peer programs that are full of malware...

I have about 700 CD's, all organized, semi-alphabetical and on shelves. I like to know where my stuff is...drives my wife crazy as she just keeps hers whereever. (Yes, we keep separate CD collections.)

The main spot usually looks like this. I like keeping it organized labeled and in cases. Of course there are small stacks throughout the house and then the CDs in the garage are a mess.

Same here - pretty well organized except for the last year or so worth of traded stuff.

I'll usually spend a day or two each summer attending to it . . . and I'm about due.

But, things are changing. I used to get bigger and bigger binders and more and more stackable plastic boxes . . . now I just keep getting bigger external HD's.
