Who says March is just for the Beacon?????

Sleepy Bill Bench Wakes up the Congregation
By Jack Goodman

The return of a long lost brother fired up the sold out crowd at the Corn Palace last night at the finale of the annual Country Church month-long run. Traditionally they would have wound it up and shut it down Saturday, but the media savvy gospel-grunge band knows a good thing when they have it. Tuesday night they pulled out all the stops, and in doing so brought back one of their oldest friends, and now fiercest rivals.

Founder “Sleepy” Bill Bench returned from exodus to show everyone just how righteous it used to be. Bench was fired many years ago after his side projects (photo books, concert shots, self-merchandising) got him into hot water with the rest of the band. (Bench always claimed it was the rest of the band’s use of recreational chemicals and their insistence every song be in the key of E that led to his dismissal)

From the opening chords of “The Psalm Remains the Same” to the hour-long encore of “You Don’t Love Me, But HE Does”, the Church fired on all cylinders. Even Stacey “Boozie” McGhee was in fine voice, slurring her way through all the old hits, some new songs, and some stuff noone was quite sure of. Photo Ron was his usual self-centered self, imploring the light crew to “keep the effn spot on me!” anytime he moved across the stage. Bench’s replacement, David “Goliath” Wyatt played with a subdued abandon fitting for a man who had managed to wreck six rental cars over the course of the run. The band may have to schedule another one week run just to satisfy the Hertz company lawyers.

The astounding success of “WhooosThis”, the band’s innovative subscription service of streaming live video from the shows, has proved the band is a force when it comes to squeezing every last dime from their fans. The band plans to take the next month off to de-tox and will then embark on a Spring/Summer tour expected to last seven months.

Bill Bench says he will return to his band The Benchwarmers and “will never set foot on stage with those f%cking morons ever again”.

Bench will next be playing the Fargo BluesFest and Chili Cook-off on April 4.
