I probably missed the thread, but when I went up close to the stage before the show last night, I noticed that Derek is using a Soldano head with a pair of unnamed speaker cabinets. When did he switch from the two Fender twin Reverbs he used to use, and which I think he still uses with the DTB. Anyone know?

This year Derek is using a Paul Reed Smith Rig, an all tube head and cabinet. The Soldano may have been left over from the nite before, but Derek don't use it anymore.

i think it's a Paul Reed Smith head - there is a discussion about it at derektrucks.com forum. I don't know about the speaker cab.

I'm sure Derek owns a few twin reverbs as well as multiples of every blackface model, but he uses super reverbs with the DTB. Take a look on youtube for the Wellmont Theater show. Those are supers, 4x10. Twins are shorter and 2x12. For the ABB, he is using a PRS head and cab now. Don't know the speakers.

Derek has said that he needs a higher powered amp to cut through the mix when he plays with ABB. Recently he was using Fender Super Six's. They were tweaked by Lord Valve out of Denver. I like those. He used a Soldano briefly, but has been using either a prototype PRS amp (from Doug Sewell) or the officially issued PRS amps (go to the PRS webiste for more info) since the last summer. All the new PRS amps are created by Doug Sewell.

The Super Reverbs are strictly for use with DTB. I've seen the PRS on stage, but I don't think he's used it yet.

PRS make 100w and 50w versions, so Derek may be thinking of trying them out in different venues and bands.

There's an article with Derek in Guitar World this month and he talked about not being sure of his sound when trading licks with Warren and his sound with the band in general, and he's finally happy with his sound with the Allmans using the new gear.

I went back and listened to revival from an old show on moogis with derek using the fender supers

and the last nights show with the PRS heads.

PRS heads cut through a lot stronger and cleaner than the fenders did.
