Eric Clapton once criticised Angus Young saying that Angus only plays 3 chords in his songs... Angus replied saying that it was true that he only uses 3 but that he actually knows all 12

Young wins!!

He wins an E.C. Edition Strat, signed by Eric himself. With the inscription "Clapton is God"

Must have been a long time ago....every time I've seen EC interviewed he has never slammed another musician. He is usually overly complimentary.

I always thought that Clapton and Pete Townshend had a bit of a rivalry. In the 1973 movie about Jimi Hendrix Townshend sort of criticizes Clapton's style by calling it "too ethnic".

In the Cream documentary FAREWELL CONCERT (Royal Albert Hall '68) Clapton jokes about Townshend's tendency to destroy his guitar.

Rght...back in the day, he wasn't above a little snappy repartee...nowadays, though, I think he subscribes to the "If you can't say something nice..." philosophy....

If you think what Clapton said about PT is bad, you oughta hear what Keith Richards used to say about Pete....however it was all tongue-in-cheek..

Hmmmm...I dunno...I've read a quote or two where he's said some not to complimentary things about Brian May, Richie Sambora & Eddie Van Halen...but, mostly in regards to their take on "the blues".

Yeah...I don't think Angus is too worried about EC's approval. Or anybody else's for that matter....

I don't know....this doesn't really sound like something EC would say, especially from someone whose favorite musicians were guys who only played three chords. And his favorite music uses, in general, just three chords.

Townshend helped try to pull Eric out of a nasty heroine slump which was the sole purpose of the Rainbow Concert, organized in the majority by PT. In my experience EC usually only makes tongu-in-cheek comments toward those he knows on a pretty personal level. All in fun. Not how I am taking this Angus Young bit at all.

If you gathered up all the initial comments for threads started during Beacon runs and put them in one thread you would have an interesting read. This thread's first post would definitely stand alone.

Wanker . . .

I have both of these on VHS, even watched the Jimi a week ago. I don't remember PT saying this, not to say he didn't. The one thing that stands out in mind my brainpan is Faye saying"ACIT!!!"

I do recall an interview where Eric was critical of Garcia... many decades past but I distinctly remember him responding to a question about the Dead in a fairly negative way...

Ritchie, you could have fooled me. If you meant it as a joke you should have said so. This is more like you riding the wave of all of the other senseless arguing going on around here. Move it along. Maybe try over at the ACDC forum where this kid of $hit belongs.

I think the smilie at the end of the Joke indicated it was a joke. Depends on sense of humour though i suppose. Don't think i meant to offend anyone!?

Look brother, peace to you and yours. I'm sick and damn tired of people trying to start more fights around here. This is supposed to be a time of insane happiness and musical bliss. I just don't understand why people want to draw attention to comparing this guitarist and that one, stirring up old conflicts between two individuals when it has absolutely nothing to do with the Brothers or their music. Now with that said, I am out of here. I'm sure plenty of you are thankful for that. I need a damn break. But I plan on surfing along with moogis'g tonight. So peace to you and yours brothers and sisters.

My intention wasn't to start a fight. I was just as pissed with the other posts as anyone, i.e. Sitting down at the beacon etc...
This is a great time for the Brothers and i'm with that. The joke was in the fact that Angus knew all 12 chords!

Anyway, peace to you too and enjoy the rest of the Beacon run

Ahhhh it all makes sense now....In high school i remember reading an interview with A. Young where he said he didnt think much of EC and that he thought his brother, Malcolm was a better guitarist. Although Malcolm being better is a total stretch, that interview did influence my opinion on EC as i've never really grasped why people thought he was god.

Ya know it's a funny thing how time gets compressed. "Clapton Is God" 1965, 1966 something like that, over 40 years ago.

Clapton, during a Rolling Stone interview (late '60's), agreed with Townsend that the Dead were "..ropey..", English slang for boring. At first, Clapton was kind of non commital, but when the interviewer told him what Townsend said, Clapton gave a half hearted agreement. May be the reason the Rolling Stane gave Cream, and particularly Clapton, such a harsh review of their Fillmore West Concerts.

What I always felt was interesting was, that although Townsend, as a soloist was not at the same level as Clapton or Beck, he always included him in their discussions.

When Clapton was in treatment for alcohol abuse, (early '80's) Van Halen and Brian May sent him a tape of a "blues jam" they did. Calapton said they sounded like they didn't know what they were doing.

Over a long career, Clapton has been anything but critical.

I'm fairly sure that Clapton's commentary on the Dead was in Rolling Stone and was waaaaaaaaaaaay back in the 1960s, I think while he was in Cream. He basically expressed his puzzlement with their sound and intention, saying something like "They're not funky and they're not bluesy."

Hendrix's complaint about Clapton was that he did not think EC was a very good rhythm player.

Hendrix's comment on Clapton's supposed shortcomings as a rythym guitarist was related by Michael Bloomfield in an interview, which makes it second hand at best. I've always doubted the validity of that statement. While Clapton was not the innovator that Hendrix was on rythym guitar, he was by no means a slouch.
