I've always thought Oteil was a great bassist. Awesome jazz player, very quick, nice scat vocals. I have never seen him run a show the way he did on Saturday night. He was turned up and thumping. Not quite Berry thumping, but much more than I'd expect from Oteil normally. Real active: groovin', walking behind Butch's kit to entertain the stage seats, walking up front and turning his back to the crowd, etc. I have a newfound respect for Mr. Burbridge and all he does.

I also will add that although the guest list from Saturday was busy, it seemed to be all Allmans with some very good Susan mixed in. Hornesby was great. Did not pull the spotlight to him, yet added a lot from the keys. Horns? Love em always. Southside Johnny? He should play the harp and not sing.

This was all about Oteil I think. Though it would be a Gregg show initally with the setlist picks, but OB took over.

Great time. Thanks again, as always guys.

You are absolutely right on the money. Thats a great observation. Oteil was on Fire all nite long. He's such an amazing musician and puts his heart right onto it.

Oh btw, I am standing directly behind Oteil and Butch, can't see me, but I was right there Saturday Nite.

And he remains one of the nicest musicians you could ever meet. I met him briefly backstage back in SF in 2002, just enough to say "thanks for three great shows". Just very gracious and friendly.

When Oteil opened Fri night solo playing Little Martha, I had tears of joy!! That was just beautiful!

You are correct Rob, Oteil is very gracious and friendly plus the best Bass man I have ever seen!

I noticed too that Oteil was laying down a nice groove 3-21. But it really didn't strike me completely until I left the TV to go upstairs and I could feel Oteil shaking my house! He is a fantastic player and we should almost feel guilty having 3 of the best guitarists in the business.

Great post man! I was thinking the same thing right out of the gate Sat. night... Oteil was clearly a Sat. night groove machine. He had been a bit more subdued the last couple shows. It was great to see him BUST OUT.

Oteil and brother Kofi are two of the nicest dudes on the planet. Totally approachable and as down to earth as it gets. Right On to the Burbridge brothers !!! Im gettin Psyched to see Kofi on Wednesday night w- DTB in Jersey and Oteil Thursday night at the Beacon... Its gon be "bock to bock" Burbridge Bros! Hahahaha...

peace everybody

On Saturday there was a very special event that took place at the Beacon. A group of people, including Lana, was there. Oteil recieved a very special Honor at this ceremony. This was at around the Noon hour. We had a very special day and are all greatful for such.

But once Oteil hit the stage on Saturday nite he just turned it on and played from the heart.

Hey there sweet family,

Duey :-) I love you, my brother. Thank you and your extended family for embracing Oteil, Sheyenne, Baboona, and myself, for recognizing Oteil for the incredible person he is, and for bestowing such an incredible, and humbling, honor on him. Our lives and hearts are forever changed by the ceremonies we were witness to, and participated in.

And the Beacon is a better place for it as well. :-)

Take care and know that you are loved,

Lana

I've known Oteil for more than 20 years, since he played with the Colonel before the ARU was formed. I have always respected him as a special person and an unbelieably gifted musician.

I'll never forget the day he came over to my house to listen to some Duane and Berry tapes. He had just been selected to play bass for the Allman Brothers Band and he wanted to soak up Berry's lines, leads, and techniques. He told me, "Ron, I am gonna BE Berry Oakley for this band!"

Standing on the shoulders of giants, indeed.

Speaking of Oteil, anyone who is a fan of his owes it to himself to watch a copy of Planet Hophead Volume 1, a three DVD show of the ARU from 5/26/90. Watching the young Oteil dance on stage in sheer joy is a wonder to behold.

I don't often make offers because I am notoriously late in getting the discs out, but just this once I'll give it a try. Planet Hophead Volume One B&P for the next five who PM me. Rusty, you can get one too if you want.

Thanks again to Duey for gettin us to that, and what a pleasure it was meeting you, Lana. I was beside Baboona and Sheyenne. We had an awsome time, and it was amazing to see the emotions come out, made the rehersal room fill with some good energy! And it was cool seeing our friend grooving on his bass ....

Still guessing about that pre-show ceremony, but there's most certainly a reason for that. My initial thought was that it was a gift from the Six Nations. Whatever it was, he must've felt really good about it, 'cause it came out on stage. I def wasn't the only one who noticed either...

Hophead, PMOTW, although I'm most certainly out of the top 5. Trade maybe???

Hey there sweet family,

The ceremony and gifts were honors bestowed upon Oteil, the Beacon and group by the Chippewas of Rama First Nation.

We shared a lot of hugs too.

Take care and know that you are loved,

Lana
