If the Lesh/Weir rumors are true I enviision the Psychedelic Mt. Jam to end all Mt. Jams finishing the run. If form holds true the set will match the guests - Dreams, Mt. Jam, IMOER type of stuff

I do NOT want to hear "Freebird" under any circumstances, not today, not tomorrow, not ever. That would NOT be an ultimate tribute to Duane, that would be the ultimate tribute to LS, a band that has nothing to do with anything except flag waving and beer. I guess I don't have to worry though cause that ain't happening...Please pick another "idea".

LS and the ABB have nothing in common about the way they approach music.....LS plays their tunes pretty much Note for Note...much in the way the Eagles do. I also don't understand why people think they do have something in common other than they both are from the south other than that the comparison ends there. The Abb compares better with the Dead and Little Feat and LS well I'm sorry to say just don't move me as a band...I can say they wrote a few good tunes but overall it just ain't for me.....so let the freebird fly at some other show but not here

I agree 100%

Lets let this terrible idea die a slow death. We have heard many ultimate tributes to Duane already this run. Let's not ruin it now.

Maybe they should do the Stephen Stills tune "Blues Man" he wrote that for Duane.....It's on the Manassas album....A much better tune and way more in line with what the ABB would do.

common misconception. he did not write it for duane. they once dedicated it to duane, but it was NOT written for duane.

according to wiki the origins are:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freebird

The lyrical portion of the song was written early in the group's history. Roadie Billy Powell was discovered as a keyboardist for the band when he played the intro piece to "Free Bird" at a high school prom. Lead vocalist Ronnie Van Zant noted his talent and invited him to join.

"If I leave here tomorrow would you still remember me?" was asked of Allen Collins by then-girlfriend Kathy, whom he later married. Collins jotted the question down and it eventually became the opening line of "Free Bird".[3]

on teh Duane allman wiki
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duane_Allman

Shortly after Duane's death, Ronnie Van Zant of Lynyrd Skynyrd dedicated the song "Free Bird", to the memory of Duane Allman. Many people assume the song was written about Duane. However, it had actually been written before Duane died. (Allen Collins wrote the song after his then girlfriend asked him the question "if I leave here tomorrow, would you still remember me?")

i think it would be horrid for ABB to cover freebird. I would rather be in a dentist chair with no novicain than have to endure that song from any group, especially ABB. i think that song is so opposite of ABB and beneath them.... if anything its LS trying to clone ABB with their slide parts. just my opinion which isnt worth much though..

this would be an insult to the ABB to cover. NO FREEBIRD!!!

Couldn't agree more!!! Why would you want to hear a Lynyrd Skynyrd song to close out the Allman Brothers Band 40th anniversary run??? Makes absolutely zero sense to me. They should close the run with something joyous like 'Jessica' or 'Mountain Jam' or 'NLTRW' IMO.

That is hands down the best idea I've seen so far. I think it'll be hard for anyone to come up with a better idea than that.

. . good call .. or maybe a Not Fade Away --> Mountain Jam --> Not Fade Away. Might be a fitting tribute to Duane.

he thought this would be a good idea b/c he was misinformed and thought freebird was written about Duane. now that it is clear that it was not, we should probably just let this die. his intentions were good. lets just forget it

btw, i think it should end with dickey playing little martha solo (have it be played by the original, with teh spirit of teh other founders present), and one of duanes guitar on a guitar stand on stage, and berry's bass on a guitar stand on stage, with teh rest of the alumnae standing in a half circle around them.

when duane died they had his guitar on a guitar stand where he would normally stand the entire show, for teh next several shows with a spotlight on it.
