My only trip to NYC a couple of years back included the ABB at the Beacon and Grays Papaya Hot Dogs. Has anyone had one of the famous dogs yet???

Yeah - but they can't hold a candle to a real Chicago Dog.

Just ask Anthony Bourdain....

Not bad at 3 AM though

Prob a can since the hot dog was invented here in NYC (or made famous at least) in Coney Island, BKK... And Gray's Papaya is a chain, do yourself a favor and just have some delicious NYC Pizza wich is also > than Chicago style and once again Invented and made Popular here in Little Italy NYC

Since when was Pizza invented in New York?

When a NYC Dog can match this, let me know:

As long as its not one of those Chicago salad hot dogs with everything but the kitchen sink on them. All kinds of relish and peppers and pickles. Yuck! A truly good dog tastes good with nothing at all, just a warm bun or just mustard IMO.

I love Gray's Papaya. They are great dogs. Snap when you bite them. I like them with red onions, mustard and kraut. Had one last Friday before Levon Helm. Bound to have a couple more this coming weekend or Tuesday 3/17.

I don't think any Beacon Run is complete without the Gray's Papaya Run either before or after the show. I think the post show dog somehow always tastes better (for "soaking" purposes, I am sure )

As an aside, I lived out of NYC for a few years. Didn't miss many things, EXCEPT Papaya dogs...Without a doubt, the epitome of the humble hot dog. No other place has the snap and spice.

Used to live on that stuff before I went vegetarian, when I was a kid and still lived up there... They had a giant sign in the window:

THE HOT DOG REVOLUTION
2 FOR $1

Those were the days, lol. We used to say, "We're all doing what we can for the revolution," then proceed to eat our dogs.

As a lifelong New Yorker, there is nothing better and worse than Grays Papaya. It really depends on how drunk you are!

For some reason they taste extra good after an ABB show....sort of like White Castle....but the only White Castle I know in NYC is further downtown, I think by 34th street. Talk about nothing being better or worse depending on how drunk you are!! Nothing like a steamed hamburger!!

Was at Grays last night, the 12th. Price went up by 95 cents, if I remember correctly for the 2 dogs and a drink "Recession Buster". They have a photocopy of their old sign and a newspaper article posted to the left of the counter so you can see the price difference for yourself. I have forgotten the exact price, might have been $4.50 for the special. Still a good cheap meal IMO.

Be safe,
John

It's just part of the experience.

1. Pizza before the show at the joint directly across from the back of the Beacon, down a flight of stairs. The name eludes me at the moment.
2. A rockin' ABB show.
3. 2 Grays Papaya dogs with mustard and kraut. You eat them on your way to your car.

I enjoyed my Grey dogs when I was there. Droogy hipped me to the Chi-town dogs that day, and we got our unique version of coneys here in Cincy. But you can't be a straight up good hot dog and Greys be it.

Freddie & Peppers is always a must for my post-show snack. An amazing variety of delicious piizzas (including soy cheese & veggies on whole wheat dough for the vegans and health conscious) from a truly unique NYC Pizzeria. It's always the little "hole-in-the-wall" type dives that offer the most authentic local dining experience. Just ask Guy Fieri from the Food Network!

I love the Hot Dog wars, its like BBQ and Pizza. Everybody has the best. May I have another, then I will tell you who's is the best......lol. Its gonna take another bite. Um they are good.

Best pizza I have ever had was at George's Pizza Harwichport Mass.
Best Hot Dog......................................my house
Best BBQ............................................my house

Y'all come see us, we are having steaks tonight. Then its show time....

This is a great place. Besure to say A PLENTY with every order, your eyes will pop out of your head when you get your order. I have gotten a Double Chili Cheese Bacon a Plenty, it must of had a pound of bacon on it.......nice name too.

# The Beacon uses the following items in preparing its meals:
* Three tons of onions per week
* Three tons of potatoes per week
* Four tons of beef, chicken, and seafood per week
# The Beacon is the largest single seller of iced tea in the U.S. We go through 3,000 pounds of sugar per week making 62,500 gallons per year (that's enough to fill 24 tanker trucks)!

Oh, and I've been to Gray's, and to Big Nick's.

Gray's was o.k., the Papaya drink was very good. Big Nick's for pizza? I thought they were kidding. I was looking around for the hidden cameras. "Can you please take back this open-faced sandwich and give me a slice of pizza?"

LMAO!!! Actually, when I saw the thread I figured that you somehow instigated it. Although I like NY pizza better, I do like Chicago Deep Dish style pizza. However, when it comes to hot dogs I prefer my salad on the side. A hot dog is a hot dog and a salad is a salad. Way too much going on for me on that hot dog in the picture. Give me a Grays Papaya or a Nathans with nothing but deli mustard and I am in Hot Dog Heaven!

Big Nick's before, Gray's after! We headed there after Tuesday's show and the line was already out the door. Greg Potter was behind us. $4.45 for the "recession special" - 2 dogs, one 14 oz drink. Nice snack for the drive home.
