the president just gave this guy some big award for pop music......??

I don't get it.

Stevie has done nothing in decades but play private parties and gain weight..........and when he does play he lectures more than he plays.

I loved his music when he was current > he is not current.

along the same lines is my disappointment with Aretha.

we lost some great ones but these two just faded away.............sad to me.

Ridiculous. Stevie, while he has always talked to damn much in concert, really and truly is a musical great and there is some excellent music on his latest album, which apprently you haven't heard.

OK, all of this is just my personal opinion, but... Check out this amazing run of albums:
Music of My Mind ->
Talking Book ->
Innervisions ->
Fulfillingness' First Finale ->
Songs in the Key of Life

That easily rivals the great winning streaks in music history. I use Dylan and the Stones as kind of yardsticks for album runs:

Bob Dylan:
Another Side of Bob Dylan
Bringin' It All Back Home
Highway 61 Revisited
Blonde on Blonde

The Stones:
Beggars Banquet
Let It Bleed
Sticky Fingers
Exile on Main Street

And when it comes to writing and recording hit singles that have endured, I would compare Stevie's prime to that of the prolific John Fogerty in CCR's heyday, where everything that came out of him seemed destined to be a classic.

For my money, nobody can touch the years of consistently challenging, hooky, musically innovative and just plain excellent music Stevie managed. You think it's easy? Try writing two good albums worth of songs back to back some time, let alone 6 (since "Key of Life" is a double)... then managing to record them with arrangements and production that push the sonic boundaries of popular music, and get the label to leave you alone and release 'em your way (that was an especially arduous task for Stevie having to buck the Berry Gordy/Motown assembly line approach, reach out to white rock musicians in NYC to help him get past the Motown Sound and bust down musical boundaries...) Those records for me are, like Derek Trucks' stuff, about as decolonized, integrated, and purely, joyously musical as it gets.

By the way, his next record after that run was "Hotter Than July" which, while not a classic like the titles mentioned above, is still a record that's better than almost anything any other pop/rock/soul musician has dreamed up in 30 years.

Just one man's opinion, but if Stevie did nothing but burp and fart and drool for the next 30 years after that run, he'd have earned his accolades.

LOL!!! That's what I'm talkin' 'bout!!! He's great! (Thanks for putting it to words Pete! ) Innervisions and Songs in the Key of Life get play in my house to this day. Stevie is a musical pioneer.

Stevie Wonder is a national treasure and should get any and all accolades coming his way. Who else in my opinion falls under that, Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, Gregg Allman, Paul Simon,BB King theres six for a start, for their life time work in music, songwriting that what I would call Americana at its finest.

Well they may have been done a while ago Langman but the held up to the test of time, think he is being honored for his legacy of work, not what he has done this year or last.

Need to honor some great artists while they are still with us. Eat a Peach, LATFE were done awhile back and yet we still seem to think the ABB is still the best band in all the land!

understand...........but the ABB tour and still put out some music and play for the people.

Stevie has just become a hired gun not a touring professional.

I still love the Eddie Murphy imitiations.

great great artist just on the bench too long.
