From the Beacon Guest Thread.

There will be guests that did not play with Duane. We are including those that were influenced by him also. We just got a call from three of the best players in the world. They want to come. we said yes and they, apparently not aware of Derk, Warren and OTeil;s abilities (after all we are just a rock band) suggested that they could play the trickier parts. I thought that was very funny. I am looking forward to that night. You will see two of the best bass players in the world today going head to head for who knows how long.

I'm curious who the folks are, any guesses ? DiMeola, McGlaughlin and DeLucia ?

Are we gonna see Oteil and Stanley Clarke cutting heads ?

Re: the 1st question ... wondering about this myself, Jon ... I mean was already planning on seeing some of the best guitarists anyway just going to an ABB show! Wondering if EC is meant to be included in the '3' and am hearing some Jeff Beck rumors now, also.

As for the bass players - you have read my mind!!! First person I thought of here is Stanley!!!

I think you're on the right track Jon. What I note about what Butch said is that it was a single call, and he seemed to distinguish these 3 from our "rock band." McLaughlin and Corea are touring together now, or soon. So I guess them w/ Stanley as the 3d. Moogis may turn out to be the deal of the century!

Based on what Butch said it would have to be people who are not familiar with the skill level of Warren and Derek. That would let out anyone who has played with Warren which is almost everybody.

I like DiMeloa alot, but it sounds like something he might say. McGlaughlin is probably familiar with Derek.
It would too cool to see Paco there jamming away.
Stanley and Otiel, definately two of my top choices. All that Les Claypool thumpin and plucking get pretty boring after 10 or 15 seconds. Stanley can do anything on the bass and I think Oteil would give him a real run for the money...and in the end...Oteil probably cuts Stanley. Stanley bows and lays that golden fiddle at Oteil's bare feet.
I'd be real suprised if DiMeola would get into the feel of the song though he'd shred the living **** out of it. McLaughlin...he'd play a bunch of notes only he would understand
Paco....he's the man. Being a Flamenco player, he would play with emotion unsurpassed.

I understand.

John McLaughlin was at Crossroads with Derek, so he understands.

Alphonso Johnson is touring with Greg Rollie right now and I know that Oteil is a big Alphonso fan, but I'm guessing Stanley.

The Greg Rollie Band only plays at a few west coast festivals. Greg doesn't like being away from his family and
that is the reason he left Journey. When they first put this band together the promotor scheduled a bunch
of east coast dates and Greg canceled them all.

Their next date isn't until May so Saint Alphonso is available for the Beacon.

Wooton has played with both Derek and Warren.

I'm guessing some Europeans, probably English players. Jeff Beck?

But the statement "after all we're just a rock band" implies someone from a different genre.

Yeah thats it John...the rock band label. Prolly the Return to Forever Guys.

My question would be if these 3 are not aware of Derek, Warren and Oteil why would they be interested in the first place? PR? Hype?

Seems kinda strange...

If Derek hadn't played with Clapton and Jeff Beck hadn't seen him at the Crossroads show in Chicago, and the "rock band" comment hadn't been made, I would have said Clapton, Beck and Jimmy Page.

Whoever probably knows Duane from Push Push. My bet is that the material they do with the mysterious trio is from this album.

My guess is that the trio suggested the material and reassured whoever was on the other end of the line that they would do the tricky or difficult parts without intending this to sound condescending.

Two could very well be horn players. At least one has to be a bass player and that would likely be Stanley Clarke. And the players may not be in a group together. They may be jam mates and have a common manager who made the call.

It will definitely be a spectacular show.

I agree they may have chosen very complex songs and figured the band would not want to have to learn it on such short notice. Of course Warren can play anything apparently instantly.

This article posted by someone on the AG confirms that the 3 are jazz players, and later he mentions Corea as an influence. So I stand by my guess above!

Chuck Rainey is also a possibility as he played with King Curtis and Aretha. But he might have played with Duane and be in the other category Butch mentioned who are already coming.
