Isn't Harrisburg pretty close to you?

And, I wonder if Gregg has ever contemplated a similar solo lp..."the X wives of Gregory 1st"?

Cheers

Carlos, Dickey and Great Southern have played the Tralf the last couple of years. I know Karen (BigSixPeachHead) has been to the venue, so you can ask her about it.

Here's a link to their website. The Wakeman show is General Admission and advance tix are $26.50

Hi TerriB

Many thanks for the link. The website had this about the date:

"former Keyboard player for the Strawbs and (most notably) YES, Wakeman has also enjoyed an extensive solo career and many side projects. This is a "MUST SEE" show for all YES and "Prog Rock" fans out there!!"

Wakeman is still in YES...I did notice that Vanilla Fudge is also playing there as well.....time for a reformed revamped Iron Butterfly with Derek Trucks on lead

Cheers

got me. i bought the tickets about 3 or 4 weeks ago and they came in the mail the other day.

the place he's playing is actually a space known as "Spirit Square." it was renamed to honor charlotte jazz guy Loonis McGlohon.

"The McGlohon Theatre at Spirit Square Center for Arts & Education seats 700 and is a showplace for local and national performances.
Opened in 1980, this intimate space was the former First Baptist Church.
With its stained glass windows and Byzantine dome, this historically designated space makes each event a unique experience."

I've seen a few shows there over the years -- Los Lobos, Johnny Cash and some others -- and Spirit Square is one cool place to see a performer. It's so small that on the row we're on -- Row E -- there are NINE seats across.

So...what's a Rick Wakeman solo gig like? This is for the kid & her ongoing musical education, not for the adults.

oh, yeah, there's a little pic of the theatre here:

John

This is off of his website...rwcc.com

On Tour

The Other Side of Rick Wakeman

As many UK fans will know, Rick has had a pretty successful "other career" as a raconteur/stand up comedian both on television and in theatres with his one man show which was a mixture of music and pretty hilarious accounts of his life both on and off the road.

The one man show has up until now, never been performed outside of the UK, quite simply because Rick did not believe it would "travel", and then a very strange thing happened.

Whilst doing some promotion back in March of this year in America he performed a one hour special for XM radio based on the one man show formula that had been so successful in the UK. He also followed this up with a one off two hour performance in Annapolis, just outside of Washington. To Rick's genuine astonishment the reception for this very "British" evening was fantastic and immediately he was asked by promoters and agents to consider doing some more selected shows in America. Rick agreed on the condition that it was all arranged through the same agent as the one used by YES so that there could be no confusion over free time and dates and also should something appear for YES, then solo stuff could easily be moved around. All this was agreed and achieved very easily.

The outcome is that from mid October through to the second week in November, Rick will be touring the USA with his one man show which has been entitled, THE OTHER SIDE OF RICK WAKEMAN.

He will be taking with him just two or three keyboards and a grand piano and of course a microphone, (let Rick loose with a microphone and one reviewer wrote that it becomes a comic lethal weapon)! The show will be in two halves and in total just over two hours long. He plays music spanning 35 years of his life and as he is on his own, the arrangements are both different and intimate in nature. A DVD of the show has been released in America to coincide with the tour entitled The Legend 2000.

If the tour proves successful then undoubtedly there will be a lot more, and if it's not ........well Rick will just be spending more time on the golf course! (Incidentally, he will probably be looking for games wherever possible during the tour!!!!).

There is no doubt that for all those who know him in America this is a completely different "Rick Wakeman", and so to all you Americans who brave one of the evenings, you'll either come away having had a great night or come away thinking that Rick needs to be mentally certified ....but most likely ...... both!

------time to learn British English

Cheers

Carlos "did he give up beer?" Rivera

i just had a nice chat with someone at the rick wakeman website about taking the kid to the show. looks like we're set.

incidentally, the website, www.rwcc.com , has an archived radio appearance that's REALLY entertaining.

Hey, Carlos,

Charlotte, a little old downtown church converted to a beautiful concert hall called Spirit Square, They seldom host stuff I'm interested in, last show I saw there was Johnny Cash / June Carter & so on back in 95 (2 shows in one night for us) and before that, Los Lobos in like, '92. It should be pretty fun IF we pull off going.

Hope you have fun. Geeez...maybe I should find someone to give this ticket to...

Not certain, but that Buffalo venue could be attached to or the same as the Tralfamadore Cafe. Never been there, but just got a burn from the master of a Warren Zevon acoustic show (6/12/86) from that venue - sounds SMALL. When the guy who originally recorded the show gets back from work later today, I'll ask him.

well, i can't exactly tell you what he did without giving away more than you'd want to know going in, but the playing, the standup, every aspect of the show was a delight -- witty, self-effacing, musical, just a ton of fun. really, really FUN. and dang if i wasn't surprised to find that i knew, basically, every song he played. (i used to live somewhere way back when where the local FM station's programmers LOVED rick wakeman)

have fun. it was well worth going.
