Suck.

I've become a pretty open-minded listener as the years pass. I just don't freakin' get the fascination with Jack and Meg.

2001's "White Blood Cells" is one of the finest album of the decade.
Their output after has been spotty, but that record is a flat-out masterpiece.

I think Jack White is very talented. He combines all types of music. Let's just say if it was on the radio and I was passing by and came to it, I'd leave it on. Don't think I would go to a show, but I like his style, man

Jack's got a ton of soul , problem is it comes out of him and his guitar in an odd way. I can respect him as a successful musican, he's living the dream and good for him.

Meg-
Theres two things I like about her.
Her tom toms.

My thing is, Jack White may have some kind of production capabilities that I've not been exposed to. But his voice is like nails on a chalk board to me. And his guitar playing does nothing for me. And lets not even get into Meg. The bouncing cans are nice and all, but where's the actual musical ability in this pair?

I say it straight up, I'm a fanboy of Jack Whites, thats for sure, and I think DeStilj is brilliant, Elephant was a real strong record, and Icky Thump was an awesome guitar album.
The Raconteurs project is pretty good as well, and takes a lot of pressure off him to be the main creative force. Didn't so much like his soundtrack duet with Alicia Keys for the new James Bond flick.

To me, its the fact that he's creative, and varies his sound and styles from album to album, but you always hear the touchstones of the old blues (played through the simplistically intense 3 chord garage punk of fellow Michigan band, The Stooges) on each of their albums. I find it engaging and interesting.

As for criticisms, yeah the vocals are out there a bit occasionally, and I'd wish he's lay off the compression pedal on his solos a bit, but I really do dig his slide style, his piano playing, and his ability to come up with great riffs and lyrics (whoops, slipped back into fanboy mode)

Anyhow, last night's performance was not good, and I think they were just doing it as a favor for Conan after his 16 year run on Late Night. Meg's playing ability aside, it does appear that she's developed some issues for whatever reason. An intensely private person, I think the whole Internet sex tape hoax, effected her big time, or there could be other demons there.

But the bottomline for me is, Jack's an interesting musician, doing creative things, and I always look forward to hearing what he's putting out next.

But hey if you don't believe me, ask Bob Dylan.
A few years back, Bob lets Jack come out during a show in Detriot, and they played the Stripes' "Ball and Biscuit", and that speaks volumes to me. As I believe, Dylan's not a guy that just lets anybody get up on his stage during his performance, and play one of their own tunes. So obviously Mr. Dylan thinks theres something there as well.

Too specifically answer Mule 75.

As long as you keep an open mind, and listen, its all good if you don't dig it. You don't have the gene for it.

I love all types of music, but for some God knows what reason, I just don't have that Grateful Dead gene, that lets me become a big fan of their music. I've got the Greatest hits, and a May 1972 (?) Paris concert on cd. And yeah, its good, but its just not doing much for me.

I'm not a Phish fan either, but I enjoy their music more than the Deads.

This doesn't make me a bad person does it?

Still love the ABB though! Doesn't that count for something?

Grammy performance from a few years back. You gotta love how they cut 7 Nation Army short, then blow into and completely freakout on a cover of Son House's "Death Letter"

I dunno man, but it looks pretty good to me, and it seems to have blown a few minds in a crowd of jaded industry insiders as well....

the conan performance was pailful. no clue what was up with that. maybe it was sorta last minute or something or jack has been under the weather. i like their music though but i hate when people say "jack white is the best guitar player under 40" or "the white stripes are a fresh and original band" as i don't think either statement is true

Efus,
Thanks for the Grammy video. Opened my mind. Pressed play and, MAN, that was a mess. His vox are painful. Its like some kind of cartoon voice. And you dig his slide style?? Are you serious???? It doesn't make you a bad person, but wtf? There are only 2 people in this "band" and they seem to be racing to catch up with one another. That drumming is all over the place. I don't have the gene, I guess.

Yeah, I do dig his slide style, and I can see why you maybe not like it. The ABB are a band that plays together as a cohesive unit, with each player getting his moment to step out into the spotlight. Its an awesome thing when they're hitting the note.

But I'm also a Neil Young fan, and love the huge "moving mountains" atonal, feedback guitar that he gets cranking with Crazy Horse. Just riding the groove and wave of sound. So its not a big leap for me to see White doing basically the same thing in the Stripes, just creating a huge wall of sound.

Like I said, I don't have the Dead gene, and theres a lot of folks that don't get that. How can you like music and not like the Dead? I don't know.

Thanks for checking it out, keeping an open mind, and giving your honest opinion. As a music lover thats all I can ask for....(but your wrong, lol)

I'm a fan, but they lost me with Get Behind Me Satan.

Never fully recovered.

The first four albums are great though.

They were terrible. Was this some kind of joke? I thought Jack was supposed to be a good musician (and he is on at least one Raconteurs CD) but I thought his guitar sounded so out of tune....I guess it's just my untrained, non-musician ears...

It was almost the equivalent of Joaquin Phoenix's interview with Dave...

I'm with you Hugh.

I respect The White Stripes more than I actually listen to them.

However the Raconteurs first one grabbed me immdiately. Great stuff !Have not heard the new one yet but have heard that it is real good .....

I never have gotten into them. The Racontours are a lot better, but I'm not a big fan of either.

I know Rolling Stone is obsessed with Jack White. They are always pumping him up. I remember at Clapton's guitar festival a couple of years ago, instead of asking EC about the show and the good cause it's for, they kept asking him about Jack White, why he wasn't there and trying to build him up to Clapton.

Love -em. Agree with the Crazy Horse comparison and would toss in The Troggs. They have great melodies and they rock. No virtuosos but that's OK.

Jeff Beck had them play as his backing band when he did his career retrospective at the Royal Albert Hall a few years back; they supported him for the Yardbirds songs. The guv'nor knew what he was doing.
