If you're going to have a housewarming party then it makes sense to invite a band that knows how to heat things up. The powers that be at the new House of Blues wisely prevailed upon one of Boston's greatest, the J. Geils Band, to officially christen the venue, and last night the rock and soul legends lacerated Lansdowne Street.

The group may be 10 years removed from its last proper reunion outing but for two hours and 10 minutes last night it felt like they'd scarcely taken a break. They slid effortlessly through their own considerable list of hits and a passel of blues and R&B covers that had the sold-out house of 2,400 howling.

Frontman Peter Wolf remains a bundle of energy and was in great gritty voice. Clad in his signature porkpie hat and a glittery black jacket, he rolled his hands and wiggled his legs through the swagger of "Sanctuary," the reggae froth of "Give it To Me," and the jive talking intro to "Must of Got Lost" like a man half his age. All that wriggling loosened his trousers as the night wore on; at one point he called out for a belt and several came flying onstage.

The band - aided by a backing vocalist, guitarist Duke Levine, and drummer Marty Richards - matched Wolf lick for lick, veering from chugging blues to raved-up soul. Seth Justman poured out thick chunks of smoky organ. Geils peeled off spicy guitar solos that tore the joint up. With his 'fro ditty-bopping along, harmonica maestro Magic Dick threaded added tart, juke-joint flavor to the proceedings.

"We're doing this one on a wing and a prayer," announced Wolf before the familiar sing-sing organ riffs of "Freeze Frame" rang out. They made it through the evening with nary a misstep.

Deadline obligations meant an early departure but sources left behind at the show said big Geils hits such as "Centerfold" and "Love Stinks" along with covers such as Bobby Womack's "Looking for a Love" and the Supremes' "Where Did Our Love Go" sent the crowd even higher. Some groups may have gotten more fame and fortune but few throw a party like the J. Geils Band.

Well-liked local belter Andrea Gillis made the most of her moment in the spotlight churning out classic covers such as Ike and Tina Turner's "River Deep, Mountain High" during her opening set.

Consider the House of Blues officially warmed.

The scene
The House was rocking and a slew of folks came-a-knocking for the big party including House of Blues co-founder Dan Aykroyd. "I'm gonna listen to Magic Dick and learn something," said the actor, who took time to sign records outside the venue before the show. The former "Saturday Night Live" star, who will bring his own Blues Brothers to the nightclub for tomorrow night's grand opening celebration, was a low-key presence but definitely wanted to check out the Geils band. "I revere those guys," he said. Also spotted in the crowd reeling and rocking were comedian Steve Sweeney, former Boston guitarist Barry Goudreau and his Ernie and the Automatics bandmate, auto mogul Ernie Boch Jr., restaurateur Christopher Myers, Lycos founder Bob Davis, Live Nation honcho Don Law, and a bunch of guys sporting Magic Dick 'fros.
The venue
Anyone who remembers being forced to become a little too familiar with your neighbors at Avalon will be pleased at this far more spacious club. The floor is wider and graded with several steps and the stage is higher, offering much improved sightlines. On the second level, which is ringed by colorful folk art and several bars, the railings are a good spot, until the crowd becomes a few people deep and then you're better off on the floor. The seated balcony area on the third floor was for VIPs only last night, but the standing room on the sides offered great views as well. Most importantly, no matter where you were in the club the sound was clear and clean. There were several opening-night glitches, however, that will need to be worked out. Many fans stood in line in the freezing rain for over an hour to get in. And before the Geils band took the stage, several bathrooms were declared out of commission, creating long lines inside as well.

There's a lot to say about this one for sure!!! I witnessed the most Rockin' insane show of my life last night... Peter Wolf does not sit or stand still as you know and the comments and stories were just as fun as the music. Man my sides hurt from laughing and my cheeks from smilin'! The very L O N G line to get in was worth it. We had a little rain but once inside everyone forgot all about that! They played all favs and of coarse a story for every song... Here's some in no particular order...

Detroit Breakdown
Must of Got Lost
Just Can't Wait
Looking For a Love
Homework
Give It To Me
Where Did Our Love Go
Sanctuary
Freeze Frame
Love Stinks
Night Time
Ain't Nothin' but a HouseParty
Whammer Jammer
Centerfold

I know I'm missing some but that's the bulk of it. Major props when out to Muddy Waters, Sonny Boy, Boston Tea Party, on and on. Good to see Carter Alan, Dan Aykroyd, Marge but briefly as we were unable to get to each other due to the tight quarters on the floor. People to my right and left were friendly and giving... beer run shared even though no one really knew anybody! I did meet some peeps from my town who I know we'll hang again!!! Just a fabulous night had by all!

I had to bring my camera back to the car but did see some folks got them in. How I don't know as they had those magic wands checking everyone and everything. I did see one guy getting what I thought to be some video so I hope he uploads to youtube. I got a few lousy pictures on my phone but other than that I danced and laughed the night away!

For anyone going to other shows there, there is a lot where I only paid $6 to park. If you go past the Boston Beer Works and the lot next to it, there's another parking lot just beyond by 1 block which is right there at Ace ticketing. Everywhere else is $12 or $15.

Also forgot to mention that if you buy stuff from the House of Blues store, then you are in a line that gets in before everyone else. Same goes if you go in to eat also. I believe you need a reservation for the restaurant though.

The regular line starts as you are walking down Lansdowne St. The line for the 'special' folks... LOL starts just past the HOB. Just a heads up for ya'll!!!

They did 'Serves You Right to Suffer', right? That song is etched in my memory from the first time I saw them 37 years ago.

Some additions to susea's setlist, not in order.....

Detroit Breakdown
Must of Got Lost
Just Can't Wait
Looking For a Love
Homework
Give It To Me
Where Did Our Love Go
Sanctuary
Freeze Frame
Love Stinks
Night Time
Ain't Nothin' but a HouseParty
Whammer Jammer
Centerfold
First I Look at the Purse
Hard Drivin' Man
Pack Fair & Square
Southside Shuffle
Love-Itis

Still missing a few....

Paid $15 to park at the Landsdowne St. garage. Felt like that was a bargain compared to the $30-$50 it costs for Red Sox games. It was nice to be in a covered garage after the show as we walked out into a pretty heavy snow squall that made for an interesting ride home!

Wasn't all that impressed w/ the venue. All the talk about this major renovation, seems to me they knocked down a few walls and just made a bigger version of Avalon. We went in fairly late and didn't really have a chance to look around since it was packed, so maybe I'm wrong.

The sound was excellent!

The line outside was a joke but hopefully they'll get that worked out.

Anyway, great show, probably will be back for the DTB & George Thorogood. Gotta let my mother know that Tom Jones will be there soon

Hey JCB, thanks for adding a few other songs I couldn't remember. I do think the venue is better. It was a bit crazy for opening night though that's for sure. The line situation was not so great and they didn't start letting people in till 7:20 when the opening act was going on at 8. Not sure what they can do during ball season but I see that being a bit of a problem for parking so it may be best to use the public transport during those times.

If the Yankees are in town or it's post-season some of the lots around Fenway get away w/ charging $100 bucks for parking if the cops are not paying attention.
