36 years later, Pink Floyd's so-called masterpiece continues to sell and sell. It's amazing how popular the record remains today. I certainly think it's a great album. But how great? Without a doubt it still sounds amazing in digital format.

What do you think about DARK SIDE OF THE MOON? Is it a masterpiece, an overrated materpiece, or just overrated?

(By the way, this post was inspired by an actual conversation i overheard in a local record store. One guy said to his friend that he thought that DSOTM was overrated)

A musical piece of art on par with the Mona Lisa or the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel...and I say that because it is truly timeless.

Masterpiece. A hundred years from now will still be discussed as one of the great pieces of music from the "1970's period of Rock n Roll" the same way Bach or Beethoven are still discussed today IMO.

I agree it is overplayed, but the fact that it continues to sell consistently well
after all this time, suggests there is something there.

So, no, I do not think it is overrated.

Yes it does. It proves beyond a doubt that kids still get stoned.

Overplayed

When I hear any of the individual songs on the radio I might even turn the station, overplayed yes. But when I throw on the album they take on a whole new significance. When I listen to the album start to finish it consumes me and a song like Money that I might hate on the radio I absolutely love in the context of the album - perhaps hard to explain why. All-in-all I think it is a masterpiece, one of my most favorite albums at all time and deserving of it's high praise.

Masterpiece as a whole body of work. I do get tired of certain tracks which are overplayed-especially when I hear the track with the chage jingling....

YES. Both overrated and overplayed. I'm not a huge Floyd fan, but I'd much prefer Wish You Were Here or The Wall.

It has stood the test of time. Yes several tracks are overplayed but maybe thats why there are still folks discovering it and enjoying it every year. I don't think it is overrated.

Somewhat overplayed, but not overrated.

The Wall is their overrated album.

I have Dark Side of The Moon , the 30th Anniversary Edition on SACD and it sounds great.
I agree that the album has been overplayed, but in my opinion, the overplaying of it hasn't
diminished its masterpiece status. Mason, Wright, Waters and Gilmour crafted their masterwork,
although the various members have gone on record that they like other albums better (Gilmour
says Wish You Were Here is his favorite, Waters tends to favor The Wall). Dark Side was, besides
parts of Wish You Were Here, the last true collaboration between the 4 members before Waters
began to dominate.

I have on DVD the Vh1 Classic Album Series' "The Dark Side of the Moon" and it's an absolutely
fascinating documentary of the making of the album, with interviews with all 4 members,
including the late Richard Wright.

Masterpiece. But I still think Division Bell is their crowning achievement and one of the best CDs of all times.

Overplayed, don't know about overrated.

Earlier stuff is better. Meddle, stuff like that.

DSOTM is more commercial.
