LOS ANGELES (Associated Press) -- We saw Beyonce play Etta James. We probably won't soon see the singing divas duet. The 71-year-old singer says in an audio clip that surfaced online Thursday that she would "whip" Beyonce for singing "her song" "At Last" at an inaugural ball for President Barack Obama.

"The great Beyonce ... I can't stand Beyonce," James said in the clip from a Jan. 31 concert at the Boulevard Casino in Coquitlam, British Columbia. "She has no business up there, singing up there on a big ol' president day, gonna be singing my song that I've been singing forever."

Beyonce portrayed James _ and sang the 1941 song written by Mack Gordon and Harry Warren _ in the film "Cadillac Records" last year.

Spokespeople for James and Beyonce declined to comment.

Sounds like an angry, bitter old woman to me.

I do like to hear Etta sing "At Last" though.

I went to see her @ a casino venue last April & we thought she was awesome! she sang from deep within her & was so fun & flirty with the whole crowd, interacting & telling stories! i would definitly recomend catching her if she comes through your areas!

Saw Etta doin' a "Pigpen song" at this show:

I do believe that the woman might be a bit bitter that she never received the fame and fortunes that beyonce has.

I'd rather see Etta than beyonce any day!

I love to hear Etta sing, the first time I heard "At last" I went out and bought a best of CD the next day. Stil have it.

I'm no Beyonce fan, I have not really heard that much of her music. I do know she is popular with the young crowd though. It's another Generation of music. Etta had her time, things are different now.

Not a bad cover at all :

I'm glad we got to see her--with Susan Tedeschi at Carnegie Hall. Great performance, but I went away with an impression that she was a little odd. Susan paid such a nice tribute to Etta, both at the show and on the album--great renditions of Etta's songs, yet I felt Etta was not nice to Susan and her band--nothing specific, maybe her body language.
For me, I would never have bought one of Etta's albums if not for Susan's cover of Security and would have never gone to see her in concert if not for that show--Susan at Carnegie Hall!! It seems to me she should be glad these young whipper snappers are singing her songs and getting people interested in her music instead of dissing them in public. She's since recanted her Beyonce comments.

What my Sista Heidi said! Etta blew me away a couple years ago. Had the crowd crying with At Last then I'd Rather Be A Blind Girl, then absolutely ROCKED the socks off the place, then got totally funky. She's all that and more.

Etta has since recanted her diatribe against Beyonce as a joke. Maybe it was.

Etta's probably feeling a little dissapointment and rejection. I also wondered why Beyonce was chosen to sing the song at the inauguration when Etta is still out performing the song in concert halls. Perhaps this was President Obama's, "Happy Birthday"?

Speakin' of Beyonce and Pimps . . . did anyone see that awards show a few years back when the still-together Destiny's Child gave lap dances (sort of) to Magic Johnson, Jay Z, and Terrence Howard? Terrence Howard got Beyonce for his dance . . . man, that was hot, I don't care who you are.

+1

I don't really know Beyonce music but I think she has a good set of pipes and did a good version....sour grapes on Etta's part but she has been ignored by the public for a very long time. I can imagine she is a little disinfranchised by now
