I find most of his stuff hit or miss.

The first album was very good.
The second, eh, ok. Too schizo. tried to cover too much ground.
The third was excellant! Wacky, experimental still, with a touch
of world beat.
Plays Live: excellant, energetic live album. Highly recommend it.
The fourth was very good, moving to a pop aspect.

So. I liked it when it was first released, my wife still listens to it.
Not bad. Huge Hit. Then again anyone related to, and including,
Genesis during the mid 80's had hits all over the place.

Passion soundtrack. Awesome world type music that he was fully engaged in
at that time.

Us. was Ok, but disappointing. The Live album from that tour was alright,
but not 'Plays Live'.

Next couple soundtracks are, again, OK. but nothing special.

UP. Another decent outing, but nothing overly memorable.
But, I hear the 5.1 vers of the album is off the charts

Please don't forget that these few albums that Peter has released post Genesis now cover a 30 year period. Also a couple of the discs you mention were ment to be soundtrack or ambient music not pop/rock records like Passion or Birdy.

Peter has always explored areas that excited him at the time and has never wanted to re-visit old ideas (a real artist in my opinion). Gabriel 3 came out in 1980 and still stands up with great songs to me as well as so from 1986.

Peter also has never buckled into the pressure of having to deliver records on the timetable that the label wants - much to the label's aggrevation.

30+ year solo career + a pioneer to anyone that likes Art-rock or Progessive music.

US is one of my all-time favorite albums... ever.

I love the first album, I think the 3rd album is intensely creative. I like SO a lot too. UP was great. And I actually think that song "Down to Earth" from the WALL-E movie is a great song.

Yeah, I like Peter a lot as a solo artist. - Although I think a lot of his instrumental soundtrack work is really cool and very moving, I can't listen to it all that often.

We have 3 of his DVD's and love watching them.... Some of his songs are good ...ranging from silly to very touching.....

All may not like his politics...I think he shows courage with the WITNESS program.

Love Peter Gabriel. So and #3 are probably my faves and I like the Shaking the Tree compilation.

I was in college in upstate NY, and Peter was touring for the first time as a solo after splitting from Genesis. So he plays at Geneso State U, which me and some buds decide to go down to in order to catch the show.

The concert was in their ice rink. I don't remember everyone in that first band of his, but they were great. About midway through, all the lights go out, and a minute later a spot shines to the back of the arena and you hear Peter's voice start singing. The spot follows him as he walks through the crowd toward the stage, singing as he goes. Everyone's cool about it all. He come right by me at a point where the music swells and he's not singing. I give him a pat on the back, he looks my way, I say "great f**king show Pete", to which he sticks out his hand for a shake and a smile. That was it - my brush with greatness.

Anyway, it was a great show. And as previously mentioned, his DVD's are all highly recommended. I wish he'd tour again.

He has done 2 US tours since UP came out.

He needs a new record to do any more US touring. IMO

I remember reading an interview of his maybe 10 years ago or so ( )
that he had about 150 songs written. Then he released one album ('02 I think)
and has been working on a new one off and on since.

Album, maybe soon. But his site says he plans to tour this year.

The maybe a Genesis "Lamb" show ... ?

I don't think so. The new Gabriel album is allegedly coming out in 2009 and then a tour. It is 2010 that Genesis is considering reuniting. It sounds like this is still totally up to Gabriel though...
