Orchestra cancels rest of 2008-09 season
The Opera Orchestra of New York blames the economic downturn for its decision.

Miriam Kreinin Souccar

The Opera Orchestra of New York has canceled the rest of its 2008-2009 season because of funding losses from the economic crisis.

The 38-year-old orchestra, which performs at Carnegie Hall, announced it has rescheduled its two remaining operas, Wagner’s Rienzi and Cherubini’s Medea, for the next two seasons. Other shows, like the concert with Ferruccio Furlanetto, which was scheduled for Feb. 27, have been canceled.

“We regret the need for this decision, but feel it is the most responsible action to take in the current economic climate,” said Norman Raben, chairman of the board. “We are embarking on a series of cost reductions and innovative fundraising initiatives to ensure a successful future.”

Like many performing arts groups, Opera Orchestra has been hit hard by the financial crisis. Donations from foundations and individuals dropped 40% over the last few months and ticket sales at performances fell 16%. By canceling the rest of the season, the orchestra will save about 40% of its $1.2 million budget.

Now executives at the organization will spend their time fundraising to pay for next year’s performances.

Ticketbuyers who purchased tickets over the phone or online will receive automatic refunds. Tickets purchased at the Carnegie hall Box Office will need to be returned in person.

Pretty sad

Mike

That's too bad. The classical arts are really struggling in this economy. I guess they always have to struggle, though.
For years, the NYC Ballet has had its summer home at SPAC; they've reduced their schedule frome 3 wks. to 2 wks. in July. A couple of years ago, SPAC execs. were considering canceling the company's contract, but fortunately a community effort to keep the NYC Ballet at SPAC prevailed--for the time being.

They are getting a double whammy. The economy is tanking, and the classical arts rely so much on benefactors who no longer have the "pocket change" left over from their multi-million dollar bonuses to sponsor.
