Today is the anniversary of the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster. It happened on Tuesday, January 28, 1986. I was in 7th grade and in school that morning in Study Hall, and the teacher across the hall from us came over and informed us that the Space Shuttle Challenger had exploded. A couple of minutes after that, an announcement came over the P.A. that it had happened. At the end of that school day, the whole school observed a moment of silence as a tribute to the fallen astronauts. It was a very sad day in U.S. history.

At the office of the attorney I worked for 15 years with. It crushed me. I always wanted to be a teacher but never finished school. So, the thought of a civilian dying was unreal it seemed. It was a cold January day here in G-Town, NC, I remember that as well. Also, I remember when I told my boss, his reaction was like, "oh well".......... I cried most of the afternoon. Still have the footage of the accident and President Regan's address to the nation on VHS tape as well as the People Magazine cover and article. I will always remember.............

I was sleeping and my roommate at the time started beating on my door.."Get up!!...come out into the living room and see this!.. The space shuttle has exploded!"....I made my way out to the living room where my roommate was watching it on the television. Shock, surprise and sadness...it was just so hard to believe, but there it was, happening right there in front of you...

Still saddens me to this day

I was on the front lawn of Lakeland Highlands Junior High School in Lakeland , Florida . We were always let out of class to watch shuttle launches . Lakeland is roughly 70 miles west of the cape , but the rocket fire and smoke trail could easily be seen with the naked eye .

They would broadcast the audio over the school's P.A. system so we could hear what was going on as well as see it . The whole thing struck me as sad and bizarre at the same time .

I was driving into work (at a fire sprinkler supply & pipe fabrication shop in Signal Hill, CA) when the new came over the radio. When I got to the office, everyone was huddled around a 13" TV set watching a fuzzy picture due to the Rabbit Ears anntenna. Everyone was in stunned silence.

Macon GA in Ms Bell's tax class. Someone told us and I rode my bike home to watch the coverage. I was always a huge fan of the space program and I was a mess for at least a week afterward. I think President Reagan's speech on it was his finest hour.

I had quit my job and gone back to college as an 'older student'. Was walking into the student center between classes and noticed larger than normal groups of people surrounding the TV's in the common area - all with looks of disbelief, some in tears. Very sad day indeed.

Not to be a downer but on February 1st 2003 we lost Space Shuttle Columbia. The report came out about a month ago that stated all the crew was alive and knew what was happening for about 10-15 seconds. The depressurization happened so fast they could not prepare. I could not imagine that.

I remember the Space Shuttle Columbia in 2003. That brought back memories of the Challenger.

I was in Boston that day.
I was a student manager of the Syracuse Univ men's basketball team and we were playing BC that night in the old Boston Garden. Watched it on the news all day at the Logan Marriott.

I was only in first grade, but I still remember this day. Kind of a vague, childhood memory. I remember watching on the news when my dad got home from work, and the teachers all talked about it to us the next day in school. I really didn't get the whole significance of it, since I was only 5 at the time, but it's funny how memories like those stick with you.

In my office at a large marine dealership chain. The young lady who helped do the books came back from lunch and mentioned "something happened with the space shuttle." I went home early and watched that footage for hours.

When I was a kid astronauts were our ultimate heroes.

yea, also remember hearing that the Challenger crew wasn't killed instangly but there was evidence of the trying to escape. same for Apollo 1.

they ought to put a damn escape hatch on those things - wouldn't have helped Columbia but maybe the others.

2nd semester, freshman year of college. Class had just started, and a couple of students walked in late and told the rest of the class what happened. Very sad.
