Start with ZZ Top's First album and go from there. They are all good, but got increasingly - commercial, polished, less raw, refined - someone else figure out the right word here...

IMO, everything through Deguello is great. Eliminator is solid and then it's hit and miss.

I also love Tejas and Tres Hombres - great records. El Loco as well. Seriously, just buy one knowing the earlier you go, the rawer the sound.

but on six pack didn't they replace the original drum sound with the newer synth drum sound of the 80's albums and remix the albums to sound more like the 80's albums? i thought someone told me that.

the newer boxset is ok. its basically just a career spanning greatest hits and a few rare tracks.

Yes, they did. The electronic drums sound like sh!t and that's why they are in the process of re-releasing all 6 with the original drum tracks as well as extra tracks.

Whatever, they need to speed it up, and get the 1st and RG Mud released. I got the re-done Tres Hombres and Fandango and they sound fantastic. Almost missed the opening of a show with a buddy, sparking it up in the car, and listening to Tres Hombres.

Anyhow, love the list of ZZ tunes. I'd just add 3 more of my personal faves; Back Door Love Affair, Nasty Dogs & Funky Kings, and Hot, Blue & Righteous....

Well they all say that.
But the interesting part is their involvement with Rick Rubin.
He's a guy that has a rep for stripping the sound down, and going with the basics, and I think that'd be good for ZZ Top.

Someone else fairly big was just working with Rubin, had a lot of promise, but nothing came about it.

He did pretty well with Johnny Cash and Tom Petty.

Ahhhh..... Glad to know that....... I always thought it looked like a good way to get the first 6.....
Can't wait for the new ones......I don't like when they go back & jack with stuff....

It's like those color movies from the old black & whites.....

Saw a rerun of the TV show Bones the other day with Billy Gibbons playing Angela's father when Hodgins asks him to marry her. He was very good as the cool but intimidating father.

so how many of the pre 1983 a;bums can you get on CD that actually sound like the original versions? you know how many can you get that don't have the drums replaced and stuff? i want the first 3 albums on cd but as far as i know they still are only available with the synth drums and 80's sound effects on them

I think the individual CDs are the original mixes with the old school drums but only Tres Hombres and Fandango have been remastered and have had extra tracks added.

I would avoid the 6 Pack Release at all costs, regardless of how cheap it is.

some reviews on amazon are saying the new remastered tre hombres and fandango are the only full length 70's albums with the original mix. they new to remaster and expand the first 2 albums and add 'salt lick" to the first album
