Johnny still puts on a great show, and has a stellar band.Just be prepared that he has to be helped out to the stage, because of sight problems mostly, and doesn't have the vocal strenght he had before his stroke a few years ago.But just close your eyes and listen to his playing,'cause he doesn't miss a llick.

Like all of us, Johnny is merely moving up in years. There's only one cure for that, and the treatment sucks!

I just watched Johnny with the Derek Trucks Band on the most recent Guitar Crossroads video. His mobility is not what it once was, but he's got plenty of fire and spirit left! You should go see artist like Johnny Winter, Bob Dylan and B.B. King - for not other reason than to pay reverence to one of the last of the greats of all time!

Go if you can - especially if you've never seen him live before. Johnny is still playing guitar like a motherfer! He may sit down to do it but he still has the chops. Like Rusty menitoned - look at the clips from last Crossroads. One thing to mention - do not expect to see a long show. He hasn't done anything over an hour for some time now (decades).

I agree. Seems like one of these threads comes up every few months. I saw JW last year, and I'm glad I did. As y'all know, he comes out and sits in a chair and plays his songs, pretty much the same setlist every night, I think. But he's the real deal, and he can still play.

It's funny about these old guys...some look like they can barely walk, but when they take up their instrument, they are young again. As frail as they are, or seem to be, Fats Domino can still tickle the ivories, and Johnny Winter can still play the blues.

I saw Johnny last year and he rocked.
He had the strings blazing and his vocals were better than expected.

I saw him earlier this month. A must see.

Do some searches and read his recent history. Apparently he had a bad manager thru the 90s and into the 2000s who kept Johnny tied to his demons and kept him zonked out most of the time. Who knows where the money went... Johnny's health took a dive as a result.

His current manager and backing guitarist convinced Johnny to leave the old manager in 2004 and Johnny has been on the mend since. There is a story out there that says the old manager died in a drunken fall down a flight of stairs within a year of the split. I was able to say hi to the new manager and shake his hand and thank him for his excellent work after the show.

Johnny's efforts to give back to the old blues masters, especially Muddy Waters, back in the late 70s and early 80s is quite remarkable. He got the kids of the day to buy Muddy Waters records and Muddy finally started seeing some financial success.

They opened the show old school style. The backing band came out and played a rocking tune or two, then they brought Johnny out. He can still belt out some incredible blues. He plays a Erlewine travel style guitar for most of the night and brings out a Firebird for slide tunes.

Here are some pix I snapped at the show -

If you've never seen him before, by all means GO. I saw him a few years back and I think he was still having some "issues", as the show was pretty weak. Playing and singing were pretty poor and he looked so frail. However, I have heard in recent years he's gotten a new manager and gotten back on track. Recent stuff I have heard and seen on youtube is so much better than what I saw at BB King's 5 years ago. I look forward to seeing him again next time' he's in NYC......

Johnny rocks on Live In NYC '97 and the live bootleg series CD's are really good as well.
