When Rolling Stone’s Brian Braiker recently called up Derek Trucks to talk about his band’s latest album Already Free, the guitarist revealed he was in Atlanta rehearsing with the Allman Brothers. “We’re getting ready for the Beacon Theater run. It’s not until March but this is the only break in everyone’s schedule,” he said. “This Beacon run is a tribute to Duane Allman. They’re trying to call in all the favors and all the friends Duane played with over the years. I can’t release any of the tunes, but it should be pretty epic if it comes together the way we think it will.”

Are Trucks and Co. worried that if they rehearse now they’ll be rusty by March? “You end up thinking through the sets, what songs you haven’t played in a while,” he said. “We record the rehearsals so everyone get a disc to listen to. There is a day or two in March before the Beacon shows where we rehearse, but it does feel odd to cram and then you have a month and a half to forget it.”

For Trucks on the legends he’s played with (Santana, Clapton) and hasn’t yet had the privilege (B.B. King), plus which covers are blasphemy, read the full interview here:

I like that he says someone gave him the Johnny Jenkins Ton Ton Macoute album recently.

I was talking with Duane Trucks about this last Friday. He said you wouldn't believe who's being contacted. I cut him off right there, told him I didn't want to hear any names, just wanted to let things happen as they happened. I did ask him as to logistics, i.e. who decides who to call, who does the calling. He said each member was kinda' using their own contacts and everybody was doing whatever would work. Kind of informal. Made sense to me. I hope they carry the concept forward all year. 'Twould be kinda' hard to fit in everybody that played with Duane into the Beacon run. And many are elsewhere around the country (like Muscle Shoals ~pant, slobber~). So it could be a pretty cool theme for Year 40, imho. And serve to draw attention to Duane's role in birthing all that came after.

I love all of this because the focus is on who it should be - Duane.

This is no lie:

During the Sugar Bowl (Bama vs. Utah), I was trying to order a pizza for delivery. The guy on the other end couldn't hear me well and kept asking me to repeat my order. So I told him, "a large supreme... a large supreme ... a large supreme ..."

Friends at the house knew Coltrane, so my living room erupted with laughter. Had to be there.

Amen, a tribute to the birth of it all.

Good interview too, any comments on Ton Ton Macoute....this may be my impetus to get it.

That's hilarious! I'm sure the order-taker was dumb-founded
