I'm not sure if this has been discussed yet, but does anyone know the story behind the new DTB CD cover?

Who is the person? What are they sitting on? Why are they sitting on it? Is that a back pack they're wearing? What was the inspiration for that particular photo?

I realize it's probably symbolic of someone feeling free, but it's an odd photo.

Does anyone know the story behind the choice by Derek or the band?

I'm going to guess..

Ascension...achievement...realizing the endless possibilities that lay ahead.

That's how I see in the choice of photography for the cover..

I'd never seen it and my first reaction:
Odd and ugly.

If cover art is art, that is bad art.

It looks like a gym set in a school yard, also, check the liner notes, but it would not surprise me if Derek took the photo seeing how he has started doing more photography these days. Could be a relative as the model. Also it is shot as a black & white and then hand tinted by oils or in Photoshop.

I thought it was a picture of Susan. And with the title 'Already Free', well sitting there with no constraints on any side of her seems freeing to me.

If that's a Susan, then its a boy named Sue

LMAO!!! Well, I do know the difference between Susan and Sueman but I just thought with a bulky tour jacket and her head thrown back and hair hanging down her back it reminded me of Susan's profile. Are you seeing an Adam's apple, Terri?

Derek gets credit for some of the photos in the package. I dont recall if it specifically mentions the cover shot.

I would be interested in hear the story / meaning behind the selection. Hopefully someone in the know will clue us in.

I don't have the booklet in front of me but I believe they do give credit to a photographer for the cover art to someone other than Derek.

I think there may be some significance to the triangular shape that the person is sitting on.

Since the title is Already Free in a spiritual context which the song lyrics have, I wouldn't be
surprised if the meaning of the triangle has something to do with the Trinity of God.
Three in One, and the person looking upward is realizing that they are in fact, Already Free.

That's how I see it anyway.

Someone sitting as high up as they can find, in solitude, looking up to the sky.

Maybe contemplating on, or talking with, God?

"Already Free"

I also was puzzled by the cover art for Already Free. So I asked Blake Budne (Derek's manager) about it at backstage at the Fox Theater on NYE.

Blake told me that their art director was in Russia and noticed this kid "having a moment." He snapped the picture and that became the cover.

That's all the explanation I can offer.

Speaking as a designer I think its a great cover. Its so different to the usual "photo of band looking moody" type sleeve. Like the type too!

Sometimes a picture of kid sitting on top of some sort of old playground structure is just that. A kid sitting on top of an old playground structure...

I like it. I also like the feel that it almost looks like it's taken off a screen with the low DPI. ( Dots per inch- printer's term )

This album is really hitting me the past few days. I had really high expectations after the fall tour and the disc fell short on the first 2 listens. I'm really starting to pick up the nuances and overall feel of the record this week.

I really like the packaging also. I read some complaints about it on some other threads. I'm being a real nit picker here but I thought the essay about the 7 signs of a creative band or whatever is really pretentious. I love the music though and that's all that really matters.

The seven virtues part of the liner notes is John Snyder (who has worked with this band for many years) showing his love towards these guys. He is just telling them how he has seen each member grow into the part that they play in the DTB. I don't think it had much to do with fans reading, other than to hip us to his thoughts. I think that was directed towards Derek and the guys.

I don't see that as pretentious, just John showing his down to earth view of his extened family!
