Port Of Call - Great HUGE Burgers http://www.portofcallneworleans.com
Cooter Browns - Its away from the FQ, but a big beer list http://www.cooterbrowns.com/

I also like Johnny White's bars and also Checkpoint Charlie's

Thinking back to all the places I've hit in NOLA (the last time was 2 years ago) I can't remember a place where watching a sporting event would be easy. Maybe some of the bigger places on Bourbon might have something. Maybe even Hara's Casino???

Best way to have fun in NOLA is to make people guess where you got your shoes.

Gregg A. and I spent some time at the Absinthe Bar..I would be careful and stay in a crowd. Crime is rough there in places.

Is the strip club with the mechanical swinging lady's legs still in the Quarter? I sure hope so. It was a mistake to go in there ages ago (there are no pearls of the Quarter within), but still it brings back good memories.

I'd head down to Frenchmen Street, just off the French Quarter. It is a very cool scene, where the locals hang out. A number of great bars and restaurants. You should be able to walk there safely from your hotel, if it is in the Quarter.

NOLA my 2nd home...

Well FRENCHMEN ST is the BEST street in NOLA for music and such. its right of Esplande. Also right by the French Markey which is the OLDEST open air market in the USA. On FRENCHMEN you have DBA (best beer in NOLA besides Cooter Browns) also bestbands there at DBA, Snug Harbor, Cafe Brasil, Cafe Negril, Apple Barrel where you can catch Coco Robicheaux or Dave Easley...Blue Nile, Rays Boom Boom Room...Spotted Cat. great places to eat as well

Also MAPLE LEAF BAR on OAK ST which is UPTOWN. Its right next to Jaque Imos (GO THERE AND EAT). Also Frankie and Johnnys is another great spot to eat...RICCOBONOS on PANOLA ST....awesome stuff

http://www.nola.com

TUNE into WWOZ when youre in NOLA...BEST radio station in the USA. and good NOLA stuff on there. 90.7

I was there in August for the bachelor party of a friend's son, and literally stumbled across Bryan Lee playing a small club on Bourbon. Bryan Lee is a NOLA guitar monster. I went back the next night, and it took me an hour or so to "remember" which club it was. As I was walking in, an attractive lady tapped me on the shoulder and said, "You told me you'd be back." As a very happily married man, those words really threw me for a loop.

Turned out to be Bryan's manager. Apparently we had quite a chat the night before...which helped explain the great photo's of Bryan on my camera that morning. That's New Orleans...

Anyhoo, there are sports bars in some of the hotels in the quarter. Check out the Gumbo Shop for good NOLA cooking, and if you get a chance, stop by the Central Grocery for a Muffalata.

For music, as soon as you get to town, pick up an OffBeat magazine free in just about any convenience, music, or liquor store, or check them out online. They have the music pulse of the city pretty well wired.

Ya gotta stop by the Rock n' Bowl. Was there this past Saturday night & saw John Mooney & Sonny Landreth make some of the finest music I've ever heard.

Yup it's still there. Went in there one time several years ago & the stage was made of plexi-glass that had a giant snake inside of it.

On Bourbon, huh? Haven't been to NO in awhile but iit seems every time I've been down there I've seen him at the Old Absinthe - on Bourbon. Wonder if he still does that gig?

I don't know if he's playing the Old Absinthe. He was in a newish club called the CoCo club, about a block from the Famous Door, and just down from the guy holding the sign for "BigAss Beers." I really love that town.

Oh, and I forgot to mention that when I was in NOLA there was a Swingers Convention going on, and my camera got me into a bit of trouble, here and there. It was pretty easy to tell who the swingers were...the ladies were mostly topless with various forms of body paint, and their husbands/partners were the guys with the big sticks in their hands.

Don't think Bryan plays regularly at the Old Absinthe anymore, his site refers to it as a previous gig. His band, the Jump Street Five along with a great singer known only as Miss Maggie were the first act I ever saw at a Jazzfest. Needless to say we spent a few nights at the Old Absinthe bar during our stays in those days.
