Been scrolling back looking for the "Live music in Gadsden" thread, but this will work fine here....

Got my first ever text msg. Friday night, all it said was, "@ Sports Page"
So with my WW II-era cell phone I got no clue. Kinda' hoping it was a secret admirer or something...

So I drop by the Tavern, one of the owners plays a new DTB Japan show he had just gotten. Don't make the Sports Page till after 11. ....and there's this kid sitting in, tearing up slide on a 335. Turns out to be Nick Johnson, of Genetic Drift. Met him during the break, nice long visit with all the Genetic Drift guys. Turns out, that when Highly Kind is touring this year in support of the new CD, Josh Gooch can't always make it.
And Nick is going to be filling in for him!!! Pretty cool stuff. Josh is a blues phenom, in the school of SRV, while Nick is a jazz guy, more like Derek. He's been schooled by Jimmy Herring. So it's purely a matter of taste. Nice situation, though.

I stayed till after 3. This was world-class music I was listening to. Heard some really nice things about Derek the man too. Hope he's enjoying his day in DC.

Btw, the new CD is also available at HTN. And Highly Kind will be in the West Virginia area this coming weekend.

Just a quick update. HTN will have the new Highly Kind release in a week or 2 according to the phone conversation I had with them at noon today, guess I can wait a little longer to support them.

Be sure to go out and see Highly Kind ... before they get big enough to where TicketMaster starts scalping their tickets!

Yea I was at the Gadsden show friday night and it was killer. They did an E.Reed that would make the hair on the back of your neck stand up. Looking forward to their show with The Last Straw in Murfreesboro in March!

I've had the pleasure of seeing Albert and Highly Kind at the past two Jams for Duane and I loved 'em! Let me know when HTN has the CD available and I'll be on the phone.

Listened all the way through last night.....some changes since I heard the unofficial final version. You can definitely see Johnny Sandlin's masterful hand maestroing the production. Very pleasant surprise to me was Josh Gooch. I've seen him live several times, and he's a power bluesman. But on this CD, he's part of the project. Very tasteful, jazzy fills, and excellent solos here and there. Perfectly mixed. Pennabaker adds a bunch too on lap steel and mandolin. And the congas are perfect too. HK has a back-up drummer from B'ham....don't know his name, but he's damn good. Puts on quite a show. Fills in when Duane has other obligations. I understand he will take the congas/percussion role on tour this year.

CD release party will be Feb. 14 at Blackstone. Mr. Gooch will be coming in from San Diego. Randall Bramlett will be invited.

Bramlett is a large part of this CD. Sings background on many cuts, wrote 3. Plays a little piano. Also a mention to local singer Amanda Quarrells. She sings background on almost every cut. She's one of the top-notch musicians that have gravitated here over the last several years, plays in several bands. Glad to see her get some exposure too.

And also Joe Keracher. Mr. Keracher was a friend of my father's. Age 90, clarinetist.
WW II vet. Played with Fred Waring. Originally from Pennsylvania, fell in love with a local girl during boot camp, moved here after the war. He has a regular jazz gig at Blackstone every Tuesday.

Rockin Camel was down to 3 copies last night. Pretty nice initial response.
Of course they'll be getting more in from the manufacturers in Nashville right away.
