LONDON Singer Boy George was sentenced to 15 months in jail on Friday after being convicted of falsely imprisoning a male escort by handcuffing him to a wall in a London apartment.

British Judge David Radford said the 47-year-old former Culture Club frontman, whose real name is George O'Dowd, was guilty of "gratuitous violence."

O'Dowd's lawyer said his client and the escort had both behaved like "drug-crazed idiots" and that O'Dowd's substance abuse problems were a contributing factor.

In 2006, Boy George whose pop band's hits included "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me" and "Karma Chameleon" did community service with New York City's Department of Sanitation after he called police with a false report of a burglary at his lower Manhattan apartment and officers found cocaine there.

Friday's sentencing occurred at Snaresbrook Crown Court in East London, where O'Dowd had been warned by the judge to expect a jail sentence.

The singer had been convicted in December of handcuffing Norwegian escort Audun Carlsen to a wall hook at his East London apartment. During the trial, prosecutors said Carlsen was held by O'Dowd for under an hour.

The singer denied the charge, saying he had restrained Carlsen with handcuffs while trying to figure out if a computer had been tampered with. Carlsen, 29, said O'Dowd swung at him with a metal chain as he ran from the apartment after a naked photo shoot.

Photos of Carlsen's injuries which he said had been inflicted by O'Dowd were shown to the jury, but the singer denied he was responsible.

Speaking to Judge Radford on Friday, O'Dowd's lawyer, Adrian Waterman, said: "This defendant is a kind and generous man who is particularly mindful of others' needs. He is the antithesis of the haughty bullying star. He was not himself when addled by the habitual and relatively long-lasting using of illegal drugs."

During Culture Club's heyday in the 1980s, Boy George was famous for his flamboyant makeup and outfits.

Are we sure he didn't actually volunteer for the jail time?

Yes he's 47, when Culture Club was popular on MTV in the early 80's he was 21.

He looks older because he has had some very serious drug issues.

"George struggled against his severe heroin addiction for many years. He would appear in public under the influence of the drug, and even attempted to do concerts in such a state. Addictions to other drugs followed, and George's younger brother David, with whom he is very close, in an attempt to save the life of his brother, went on UK national television and blew the whistle on George. Some of George's closest friends had already died of overdoses and the co-writer of the From Luxury to Heartache album, Michael Rudetsky, was found dead of a heroin overdose in George's home in August 1986."

Reminds me of the wedding singer - do you really want to hurt me.

Tragic.

Rock n roll - this is what you do if you are an 80's hit wonder and aren't into throwing tv's out the window.

Better to stick with the blues I say - keep you occupied for a lifetime.

I can't help but feel sorry for the Dude. I remember when I first saw a Culture Club video on MTV..I thought he was a chick...LOL !

I always liked his voice and had one of his cassettes. I used to wear my wife's sun dresses and high heels when I played it. I also carried a cute little umbrella...with a frilly hat.

But serious, I do feel sorry for the him.

Kenny, that is one visual I could have lived without seeing in my mind.....lmao. I do feel sorry for those that battle addiction, but I have problems with "rock stars" that think they are above the law. Many walk away with sentences that are a smack on the hand. Do the crime, do the time the same as anyone else.
