Didn't crash as much as had to land in the river due to bird strike at take off. A full sized jet, though, and it went down around 54th street. Pilot seemed to use the water for a controled landing, although this is definitely not a sea plane. The jet has stayed a float for a while, didn't break up, but sinking fast. Its on your TV right now. They think the flight was to Charlotte.

So far no fatalities - hope this holds true! That water has to be very COLD! Thank God if this was to happen it happened in the vicinity of rescue resources.

The plane is an Airbus A320. NBC News identified it as Flight 1549, which departed at 3:20 p.m. ET with about 145 passengers and five crew members aboard. It was a scheduled flight to the Charlotte-Douglas, N.C., airport. WNBC's Tim Minton quoted a governmnet source as saying that the pilot may have hit a flock of geese.

It looks like the jet stayed afloat long enough to get everyone off, according to NYPD. Apparently the jet lost both engines yet managed to avoid the buildings and hit the water at the right angle as to stay flat and on top, hence the rescue first by water taxis and quickly other boats in the area. Pretty wild. Birds seem to be the culprit.

I work in the 50's on Broadway, people on the Westside of my building are trying to see what's going on. The plane and boats must be close to the NY side since a friend of mine on the 16th floor can't see what's happening. From what I've seen so far, it looks like the people are OK. There's tons of commuter boats and NYPD harbor patrol right there. Put a cape on that pilot. This could of easily been the west side highway or 9th ave.

No doubt - smart thinking on that pilot's part to bring it down here.

Looks like all got out OK. Helluva pilot. Some people banged up from the impact.
Coulda' been a disaster on the ground.
Looks like NY, NJ folks got to them immediately.

Amazing rescue. Racing against the cold, the current and the sunset. How fortunate injuries seem limited.

Wow....and life focuses the lens again.

Perspective. Perspective. Perspective.
