KCJ

Go ahead and send me your snail addy. I have to make a correction. My DVD has the full menus. The conversion to VCD leaves only the beginning/start menu. I will do the VCD as the Vine as many folks are not yet equipped to rip from/to DVD.

Cheers

Carlos "cheers" Rivera

Hello Carlos...I'm interested but being a newbie, I am totally uninformed as to what a vine is or a VCD for that matter. Can someone give me some info or steer me to a FAQ ?

Hi LPS and all

Yes, a VINE is designed to transfer "material" by the following process: I acquire or "produce" something, pass it on to the first person on the vine, who then makes a copy for himself, then passes it on to the second person, so on and so forth. In this case, once the 5th person gets it, he or she is free to offer it on for themself or keep it. It gets out to any number of designated persons without the BNP "hassle." With one disc, it just requires one envelope and one stamp, so to speak, to pass it on.

As to VCD..it stands for Video CD, which uses a greatly compressed delivery of VHS, or, MPEG/MPG style video. In this case, I put the ACL show of 56 minutes on one CD disc, and will play on both DVD and PC systems. You may have to tinker just a bit on a pc system, but it will work on it.

If you have more questions....probably the best site on the web is at
www.dvdrhelp.com

A great source for burning, editing, trimming, converting all sorts of video.

Cheers and hope that helps

Actually. I was wondering the same thing. Is there someone on the vine who might consider a limited BnP for those of us who would really like a copy but are not equipped to pass one on ?

Folks,

The VCD compression is greater than the DVD format, and I am not sure that converting VCD video to DVD format is that effective, efficient, or, possible, though probable. I was able to do it to DVD and VCD, but for a number of reasons obvious and not so obvious I did this Vine as VCD.

After this one goes out (already in the mail to KCJimmy this morning) maybe it will be a good time to survey and find out how many folks on the list are interested in DVD over VCD format for trading, bnp, vining, etc., etc.

Cheers

That right Carlos. Generally VCD resolution is equvalent to VHS resolution and you don't really gain anything by burning to DVD except having a bunch of wasted space on an expensive DVD blank. Most of the video shows around were converted from VHS, so again you wouldn't gain anything. You can fit about 80 min. of VCD video on a regular CDR blank and is playable on both DVD players and computers (even with out a DVD drive with a little tweaking). The only reason I could see to burn to DVD would be if the video capture was done originally in Divx from a pure digital source or if it was a rip from an original DVD source (most of which you would then be talking about about something commercial).

But that's just my opinion, I could be wrong...

yea WharfRat, that's right. Duplication of a VCD just involves doing a disc copy on a cdr. My standalone DVD player prefers Fuji's or Taiyo Yuden for the best playback, if other brands are used I get some stuttering & artifacts, but using those brand discs I have NO problems. I suppose mileage may vary...

BTW "been a long time" is not meant to be a flame of anyone, in my opinion, it's just the nature of a vine - too serial...

Benjamin,

I don't see anything particularly wrong with vines - you get the advantage of a flawless 1st gen copy of a show (I know we're talking about CDR here, but we all know what a mess some folk can make of a CDR copy!), and they're certainlty easy to set up & track.

Vines can be incredibly effective at circulating the music to EVERYONE that wants it (unlike B&P offers, where vigilance is paramount!), especially in small or closed trading groups.

The downside, as I see it, is in the length of time some of these things can take - vining a show down past any more than 6-7 participants is asking for trouble, particularly within the context of a large trading community; where more than 5-6 people want to join a vine, I would always recommend doing 2 or more separate strands, in order to keep things quick.

All IMHO, of course...

Jim, I am scorched

I was trying to see if we could distribute it in other ways. I sent it out but am not sure that it worked...Hi KCJimmy....and since I did not hear back assumed it was fine

For those who are interested, I have it available in DVD format with menus of a sort, so I can do a bnp for three (3), pm for details.

I also hope to get some other material available after I get a P4 3ghz system. I did notice some delay (about half a second) on the sync of audio/video. I am looking to try to vine/circulate, etc., etc, some Focus, Genesis, Rolling Stones, Grand Funk vhs material in digital format.

I got the disc but am still waitning for some guidance from Carlos cause I don't get anything from it. There seems to be nothing on the disc but a bunch of empty folders but no files.

KCJ, send me your addy again, and I will get another one out.

The actual recording date may be Nov 95, but it was IIRC in 96, when I, certainly among millions , recorded it from the telly
