Just curious as I seem to be showing the classic symptoms. I'm seeing my doc anyway next week and we'll talk about it then, just seeing if any of the peeps round these parts have ever dealt with it.

I will say this about my ergonomic status at work and at home: disasterous. Especially at work. I start off sitting higher than the keyboard but it seems as things get busy and old slouching habits begin I'm right back where I started. The tingling in the specific sections of your hand that are an indicator are there, plus wrist and forearm pain has begun.

Anyone ever dealt with it, or treatment, surgery, etc.?

Yes. But I didn't actually have it. I had something more like tendonitis.

Try wearing neoprene wrist guards to support your wrists. Also get those ice packs with velcro and wear them on your wrists for about 10 min. at a time to reduce inflammation.

Carpal tunnel starts when your tiny little wrist muscles swell and squeeze the tendons and ligaments and blood vessels too much ("I'm not a dr. but I play one on TV....or did I stay in a Holiday Inn?...) Anyway...

My doctor was not helpful. She prescribed taking 4 advil at a time, which eventually messed up my stomach. She was not willing to prescribe physical therapy for some reason...not very holistic of her.

What finally helped me was massage. At first it really hurt after the massage, but they worked out the muscles and got things circulating and I recovered soon after. I had gone through about 4 months of pain until the massage.

Yes I have, get yourself a wrist brace right away. That will help you while you wait to see he doctor. Also, if you can get yourself an ergonomic keyboard for work and an ergonomic mouse pad, that should help alot as well.

Mine has been fine ever since I changed the keyboard and mousepad at work, and the brace helped alot too.

Hope you feel better soon.

Carpal Tunnel is in the wrist, but if you let it go, the pain can work its way up the arm and to the shoulder, then down your back...it's all connected.

The Brace, get the brace. Carpal Tunnel can be very aggravating. I also got a little arm band (with velcro) that you put right below your elbow. I had the wrist probem along with an elbow issue.

Both healed without a Doc visit.

I also used this stuff called JointFlex.

Thanks Kenny - I'll look into that brace for sure now that there are multiple recommendations.

Wow Lefty - really? Did it come from playing? Did you have to alter your style?

Never had it, but know many, many people who have. It was very common in our textile mills here, repetitive hand motion on the sewing machines. Can't count the number of folks I know that have had the surgery, many on both hands.

Good news is that the surgery is quite routine and fixes it. Pretty long healing time though.

And it's quite common in professional guitar players as they age, I'm told.

just had the surgery on the right hand. (Dec 15)

getting ready to schedule the left. the right is not 100% yet but good enough to do the left.

Just getting back to my yoga as the wrist wouldn't support my weight in some poses.

Pretty sure I have carpal tunnel in both wrists from working with computers and other keyboard machines for 35+ years but haven't gotten it checked out. It's on my to-do-before-retirement list (let the company-comped health insurance pay for it...)

Go to the pharmacy and get the neoprene wrist band that has a thumb hole to hold it in place and velcro. They're pretty inexpensive. Makes a big diff.

I will... but I also have a tear in my rotor (sp?) in my shoulder and being on the computer aggravates it, too. I will need surgery , I guess. I have had this pain since Mother's Day 08.. and at times it's excruciating... I take alot of Motrin 600mg..sometimes when the pain is really bad I take vicodin which I really hate... I don't want to spend the rest of my life on med's for this.

Good Luck to all who are suffering and in pain....

I had the surgery on both wrists about 15 years ago. It was the best thing I ever did. Two weeks after the first wrist was done, I was skiing. The second wrist took a few months to heal, but it was fine--barely visible scars, too.
It had gotten so bad that I was waking up every hour or so with pins and needles in my hands. I wore the braces for a while but they really aren't a cure. And being in nursing, really weren't practical. I also took Naprosyn which helped but again, is not a cure.
I was told that the surgery may have to be repeated because fluid can reaccumulate around the nerve but so far I'm pain free and hoping to stay that way.
You should have an electromyogram which will help your doctor determine if your symptoms are caused by carpal tunnel syndrome or tendonitis or something else. I'd hope for the tendonitis because that's more likely to be a temporary problem. Although it sounds like you've had this problem for a while
Good luck and feel better.
