Gregg Allman

Tuesday, Jan. 6, at State Theatre

By Mike Riggs
December 30, 2008

The closest thing Gregg Allman had to a successful solo career after leaving his older brother’s band in 1973 was a warmed-over version of “Midnight Rider” and an addiction to any substance that could be snorted or injected. Then in 1987, Allman released his only hit, “I’m No Angel,” a poppy dance number that doubled as a confessional tell-all about his bad-boy lifestyle. Aside from the semi-bluesy solo, the song was completely foreign (and distasteful) to fans of Allman’s earlier work with the Allman Brothers Band. But like all good bluesmen before him, Allman eventually dropped the sauce and made his way back home, recording a full-length album with the Allmans in 2003. His solo repertoire still contains some crummy covers and even a roots-rock version of “I’m No Angel,” but it’s also heavy on the stuff he wrote with his brother Duane before he tried (and failed) to make it on his own material.

GREGG ALLMAN PERFORMS AT 8:30 P.M. AT STATE THEATER, 220 N. WASHINGTON ST., FALLS CHURCH. $48. (703) 237-0300.

Well ... everybody's entitled to their opinion. Even if they are wrong. As with writing of many music critics I take this stuff with a grain of salt ... I've read this negative kind of stuff by others for musicians I really enjoy only to have them turn around and rave on somebody I find totally lacking in talent. This particular columnist also listed the following as his top 10 albums of 2008 (BIG difference in musical tastes here ) ...

1. The Alchemy Index Vols. III & IV, Thrice (Vagrant)
2. Lost in the Sound of Separation, Underoath (Solid State)
3. Life Is Not a Waiting Room, Senses Fail (Vagrant)
4. Blessed Be Our Ever After, Burden of a Day (Rise)
5. Dear Science, TV on the Radio (Interscope)
6. Heart Is Long EP, Idiot Pilot (Reprise)
7. Dance Gavin Dance, Dance Gavin Dance (Rise)
8. The Tide, Oceana (Rise)
9. Get Damaged EP, Be Your Own Pet (XL)
10. Secrets are Sinister, Longwave (Original Signal)

See my only problem with that is that my guess is that the reporter has never listened to any of Gregg's solo material and put that together from old archives. Reporters tend to be really lazy.

"and an addiction to any substance that could be snorted or injected"

That could apply to God knows how many musicians and people in the entertainment industry over the years.

The most important thing was he beat it, that it did not put him in his grave.

I have never disliked any of solo stuff. "Searching for Simplicity" to me is a damn good CD.

Of course the guy has a right to his own opinon. He was probably playing some music by The Smith's as he was writing the article.

Well, can't please them all.

Dean's review would have been even harsher, with a verbal jab towards Gregg's Angels also.

Yet another "music expert critic" that props up stuff no one else has heard of as a means to show that he's smarter than everyone else.

I have seen Gregg's solo band a few times and thought they were great. I try to avoid such reviews in newspapers. Music is very subjective and you never know how qualified the reviewer is and what they know of what they are reviewing. I let my ears do my reviewing.

FWD:::::::

Hi Mike Riggs,

Your article about my father was tasteless and obviously lacking of any real research. It was my understanding that research is exactly what you get paid for, being a writer for a major newspaper. First, it's simply not necessary including anything about his personal life. This IS in fact a preview of his concert correct ? Second, he didn't write "I'm No Angel" it was written by Tony Colton ,a british songwriter and complete gentleman. He's authored other big hits as well. People like the song, it's tongue and cheek...and hey, it was the 80's.

The magic that the early ABB shared with the world in the early 70's was undoubtedly something that touched many people and continues to. The synergy of my father and late uncle Duane along with Betts, Trucks , Jaimoe, and Oakley was potent enough for them to live forever in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I don't think my father's fans will appreciate your invectives aimed at his solo career. It is a fantastic show , a jazzier, LAID BACK side of my father that appeals to many many people.

Please do your research next time and remember that there are real people that are sent these previews and reviews.

Sincerely ,

Devon Allman

No way! We will be there with bells on! Gregg's shows are fun and the music is top notch.

That reporter should be fired. He doesn't know what he's talking about. He didn't get his facts straight. I'd like to write a letter to his editor and tell him what I think. What an idiot that reporter is!

He's a typical music "critic" for a newspaper.

They are everywhere, and most do the same bahg up job as this moron.

GREAT response, Devon.

Now get Honeytribe to Syracuse so I can see a show.

(But do it after I've recovered from surgery, ok?)
