I'm in shock.
He left for work (evening shift)
and he says they were 'waiting for me'

He's been there 25 years.

I don't know all the details, yet.
I heard a noise, downstairs,....it's dark, and the door was locked from the inside.
He'd forgotten, and tried to open it, anyway.

He finally said "It's me"
I got the door open and he was standing there,....a beer in one hand,...

I couldn't read his face.
But he's gone back out, to put away the stuff from his work locker.

I can't think.
I guess there's no question as to when his 'off' days are, now,.....

We were counting on an eventual good retirement.

I know,....this sort of thing is happening all over the place.
But it's 'new' to, me,.....

Sorry guys,....I don't know, what else, to say,.....
I'm just glad we've already paid our property taxes,......
Wind.

Wind, I am going thru the same thing myself. I had busted my @ss at my company for the last years, and now am having to fight tooth and nail just to get my unemployment. (which I still havn't won my case for).

I also havn't been able to find another job. It's getting hard at home too! Not much I can say, but that I am sorry. I am praying for y'all that everything will work out!

I have been out of work since July. Don't know if I can afford the Beacon run this year and tix are bound to go on sale like, what, next week? I don't know what I'm gonna do about that.

I guess there could be worse problems...I could be homeless. I could be starving. I could be unhealthy. But I'm none of those things. And for the first time in years, I'm in a great relationship.

So, everything is relative. Overall, I'm pretty damn happy. You will be too, Wind. You just need to get over the shock, and the lesson here is that you can't count on ANYTHING unless you run your own show. Also...this is my third layoff since 2001, and in general, I have found that when one door closes, typically a better one opens. Keep that in mind.

My best wishes to you and him for a very happy 2009. It's gonna get better from here!

Love,
Laura in NJ

I'll never forget when my father had been a machinist for a company for over 25 years, then they suddenly let him go with no warning. Just laid him off without any notice. Horrible. He luckily put his money away during all those years and is enjoying a nice retirement. He recovered, and so will you and your guy.. You have loving, caring people around you.

Is there a line here? I got fed up with the BS I was receiving at my job and walked out last Thursday. To make a long story short I got effed on my pay for the past 6 weeks and after my boss told me he was doing me a favor I told him I don't need any favors. So, now I am back to looking for a meaningful job in a troubled economy.

Today must be the day for a lot of folks. My Mom called me earlier to tell me she was let go from her job today. She's 73, so she has SS and all, but I'm worried what will happen to her without something meaningful to do now, how she will go about filling her days. Sorry to read about this. What a crappy way to say Happy New Year. Hopefully it won't last long.

Wow......wish I had the balls - there have been times when I would have quit my job, but not without something else already lined up. You may be a lot younger than me, and I WOULD have done that in my 20s. Anyway, I agree about not letting my boss make me feel like he is doing me a favor. I had a year-end bonus coming to me, which never showed and has gone withou a conversation from my boss. So, I am going to talk to him Friday AM and ask him what happened to it? I deserve an explanation as I deserve what I earned - if he doesn't feel the same way, I will live with it, but cannot let it go without talking about it. I am grateful to be employed, and feel bad for anyone who has lost a job - I have before and it can suck, but I later was grateful that I was moved on because someting better did come along.

drkstr40 I wish I was younger than you, but I am 53 and stubborn as a mule at times. Maybe it's because of my union upbringing that I don't take **** or as I previously stated just stubborn as a damn mule. Whichever or whatever, I will be working before long. It's too cold up here in Georgia to fish on a daily basis.

Union jobs are getting tougher and tougher to come across these days. Heck jobs in general are. I hear and read all this BS about unions ruining America. Hell thats just crap the good ol boys money club has polluted the non-union American workers mind with so you can be paid bottom dollar or " whatever the market rate is" line of crap.

Amen Jon. The same mentality went on over there at this job. If you mentioned unions you better say something bad about them. Funny thing is the management over there were about the most ignorant bastids I ever met. One told me Obama wasn't a US citizen and that he was Muslim. I could go on and one.
You never hear anyone complain about how much money CEO's of major companies make and it's more than the law allows. Pitiful.

So sorry for anyone that has lost a job

Indeed these are hard economic times. My company has been laying off since August or September this year. They gave great packages for people that were laid off or retired...

I am to work for a company that listens to the employees, pays a good wage and are very flexible with working hours.

After saying that, I am working harder than I was when I went to work for them almost 30 years ago...

I'm so sorry to hear that you've lost your job. And, Drew and all others, I'm so sorry to hear your news as well. It's so tough right night, but I hope and prayer for brighter days real soon. Good luck with your job searches and hang tough!

Man, that is really tough to hear, windsinger. I am so sorry.

I was sick for a couple of years and unable to work. Now that my health problems have been cured, and I find myself looking for work in the worst job market in 30 years.

I do not know how this will play out, but I am trying to stay optimistic. Beacon in 2009 would take a miracle and I don't play the lottery.

Hoppy, I know the feeling! It's important to not let yourself get negative though!

In the Book Traveler's Gift by Andy Andrews, it says to persist without exception. That is what I try to work on everyday.

Just don't ever give up, and let somebody tell you it ain't gonna happen! It just hasn't happened yet!

There is a lot of work for our President Elect to do and very soon. Have hope that he and his team will be able to get it sorted out soon and back on track in 09.
I am ready to go back to work after staying home with kids for 18 years. I have a BBA and a decade of experience in Human Resources but with everyone else out of work I don't think I have much of a chance of landing a job anytime soon. I used to work for ENRON and lost all my retirement funds back in 01 and I really don't have any references that far back. I do have some contacts that I have volunteered for so hopefully they will vouch for me if I ever do get any interviews! I am very lucky my husband has a good job but he does have more work than one person can do! Not much balance in life for him.

Good luck to everyone searching for work. I am confident that life as we know it will get better soon. We will keep you in our thoughts and prayers.

Play some good music and it will help what ails ya.

Hop, go see my cuzzin and BGUG tonight or tomorrow or both!
