Just curious on some opinions here. Here is an article from a local newspaper here in the Chicago IL suburbs:

"First-time drunken-driving suspects will find life to be more difficult after Jan. 1.

That's when a new state law takes effect requiring a breath alcohol ignition interlock device to be installed for first time DUI suspects.

Anyone who wants to continue driving while fighting a DUI charge must obtain a monitoring device permit allowing them to be behind the wheel during license suspension.

The gizmo also must be installed in the suspect's vehicle. The new law requires people to take a breath test every time they want to start their vehicle and at periodic intervals after the engine has been started."

What I was amazed about is all the comments posted by people after the article, so irritable about it. - The way I see it is if you don't plan on drinking and driving, it really doesn't matter what the law is...

Were the arguments against installing this device in the vehicles of "accused" drunk drivers or "convicted" drunk drivers?

If people were protesting the action, I would guess that's where you would find the distinction.

Only a couple comments really distinguish the difference.

I guess when I read the article the first time (which is pretty vague) I read "first time DUI suspects" as convicted DUI drivers. Whether that's what the law will be, I'm not sure. So I didn't really think too technically about it.

Anyway, hopefully this like will take you right there:

I would add : Drunk driving = TROUBLE = eventually

Count me as one who had done it 20,000 times successfully and got popped on the 20,001st time.

Although I am far from a preacher on the subject, I strongly warn my friends ... you just don't know the trouble, financial, emotional, how it affects your family etc. etc...

In my opinion, laws for stuff like this and more are what we are just going to have to get used to in this country.

That interlock device...what they don't tell you is how much it costs YOU. Luckily I didn't go down that road, but they are EXPENSIVE...

Sort of off topic, so sorry for that...but those that still drive after having a few...I wish you luck that you never get pulled over, remember it does not have to be because you are doing anything wrong...the police can and do pull you over for no reason at all and once they smell alcohol...it's over.

Planning ahead for a DD or whatever you have to do to avoid a DUI by not driving IS WORTH IT...take it from someone who knows....sermon over.
