Well guys, just got back from the killer weekend. I got to post a show review later(it will be a five star review), but right now I'll tell you 'bout those instant live cds. They sound awesome! A perfect mix of crowd noise with perfectly clear vocals. Couldn't hear anyone yelling "blue sky" from the crowd. First, you have to go to a booth and pay for the cd, $20.00 and they give you a ticket. After the show, another booth has the cds and you trade your ticket for a cd. That's the really long line! In charlotte it took them about 30 mins to get the first batch out and then they kept coming and I got my cd within minutes. A nice package which folds out three-fold and each one is numbered with a mushroom. (one 'shroom for disc one ,etc.). The next night in raleigh they seemed to have their act together a little better. There were 2 pick-up booths and we were out in less than 30 mins. Great crowds and no whinning about the wait. I talked to Lana and Rowland at the pre show party in raleigh and they are 100 percent behind this and so is the band. There are talks of doing it more often if this works ok. I think it did. Rowland insisted that audience taping will always be allowed. I was very skeptical of this a few weeks back but now that I see that it worked, and the music is awesome, I am all for it. One thing I noticed: the packages have bar codes on them. This means they can be scanned and easily sold in stores. I did see a few people buying more than one copy. Don't be surprised if these shows show up in your local record store or even on ebay. Sad but true.
All in all, I think it went very well and I supported it by buying a copy of both shows. I met alot of cool people at the mellow mushroom pizza place. Hi folks, I hope you all made it back home safe!

btw, I now will get back to the stack of b&p's I have on my desk

If they show up on ebay, it is legal as long as they are originals and not copies, right? Not that I plan on buying them that way, just want to have my facts straight.

Thanks for the review!

Mike is right about the great sound. I got the Charlotte show-which was awesome-but was disappointed that they split a superb 40 minute Mtn Jam onto two discs when it was not necessary. It reminds me of playing the EAP album years ago. Are they that unfamilar with the ABB's music?

According to the instant live website, you will soon be able to buy all the shows that they record off of their site. I have already been bombarded with pm's asking for trades and b&ps. The simple answer is no. Not to be rude but everyone here knows the reason why. If it was sold by the band, and the band is making money off it, then it is wrong to trade it or burn copies for free. That is cheating the band. Be patient guys. There were still alot of tapers at the shows that will share their copies for free. And it looks like instant live will soon make them available for sale on their site.

I got the Charlotte show and although the sound is good Mountain Jam is split! The first track You Don't Love Me fades into the opening "jam" and has some song playing over it, anyone know what that was? Sure didn't sound like Allman Brothers to me. Also, the 30 minute wait afterwards (and I was towards the fromt) was a little ridiculous. They shut down the booth and refused to re-open until everyone got within the barriers and made a nice neat line, like that would ever happen. Well they opened it back up a few minutes later still in complete disorder. It's a pretty darn good idea, just needs a little work on distribution and it might not hurt to have those burning to be familiar with the music, hence no split songs. All in all, I think the $20 was a decent buy, a very reasonable price compared to the other merchandise and I'd be willing to buy other shows

Andy,
What you hear at the start of YDLM is music playing on the PA system as the Brothers begin playing.... The way they distributed the CDs at Charlotte was indeed terrible. Hopefully that will improve the more they do it. When they were pre-selling the CDs before the show they said there would only be 1000 made. If they offer them for sale on their website will it be the rest of the 1000 that were burned or will they burn more if the demand is there. I bet on the latter. Personally, I would like to buy some of the legit copies of shows that I can't attend.....But how long will it be before copies of these SBD shows show up on ebay?

I happily pay for music. I totally support the bands' right to make a profit. I've paid premium prices for music not nearly as good as what ABB is cranking out on this tour. Ebay? If it is legal and I can't get in anywhere else, why not? I was very dissapointed the CD's were not available in Atlanta. And I'm dissapointed that the shows that have been recorded are not being offered yet.

I really like the on-line Phish distribution. Fast and solid good sounding boards of the shows. More importantly Phish has managed to grow their community around the distribution. The fans get to comment about how good it was at the show or about how bad they wanted to be there. When ABB is at the Beacon I pine to be there. I would be so much more a part of the scene if I could purchase, download and listen to the show within a day or so.

Improvisation is an amazing art form in that it seeks input from the observers, the audiance. Let me listen.

From the FAQ on the instant live website:

2. I bought a disc and it skips or will not play properly.
Some older CD players do not have the technology to play duplicated CDs. Please try the CD in another CD player and if you believe it is defective, return it (see #3).

Anyone know what this means? Are these discs actually CD-Rs?

They were indeed cdr's. Silver on top with only the necessary graphics and green on the bottom. Your player would have to be really old for it not to play it. like 10 years old or more.

Hmmm, interesting. I believe that I read on one of the "ebay scum" threads that selling CD-Rs on ebay is a no-no, so even though these are a "commercial release" ebay rules may prevent them from being sold there.

Was the Atlanta show available to purchase as well as Charlotte and Raleigh?
I don't believe so...was that because of the venue...?

Also guys, as far as the split Mountain Jam goes...I believe Rowland mentioned on the guest- book that the ABB changed the show on-the-fly that night, which they do from time to time...so that is where the continuity problem can posssibly come into play. The band isn't going to say to themselves..."wait, we can't play Mountain Jam now because the "instant live cd's" can't fit it on the same disc!..you know what I'm saying? It really isn't that big of a deal. At least its split during drums and not the jam segment. Its cool the band even gave the crowd another Mtn Jam to listen to...they are all so different. I mean who doesn't want to hear Mtn Jam? the split is a small price to pay for such a great song.

Peace

Regarding the split, it would surprize me if someone hasn't already Spliced the two halves of MJ back together on CDRs. It would be easy to do if it is important to you.

I saw on CC's webb page that they recorded Hartford CT also about a week earlier than the others. Was it sold also or did I understand it was a test. Will it be sold? I can't imagine not just more money for the corporate giant.

Another thread about this instant CD says that about 500 copies were sold at the Hartford show, so it wasn't just a test.

I emailed CC Instant Live to inquire "How Soon" non attendees would be able to purchase the shows. I have not heard back yet but I get the impression from what i have read that it is not going to take long.

Quick reply that does not jive with what their web site says. May have to wait for Kid Glove to get them.

They said...

Thanks for your email. Unfortunately, the Instant Live recordings were all
limited editions, and currently there are no plans to sell beyond on-site at
the shows. If obtaining the discs is something you feel strongly about, it
would not hurt to check out the Allman Brothers' website in the next few
weeks to see if they have any plans to make more discs available.

Best regards,

Yeah KC Jimmy, I got the same reply about the instant live cd's. I can't believe they wouldn't sell them beyond the night of the show, after all, it is already in the can. I would much prefer to buy a good sounding recording over an audience tape any day. Plus, put some money in the ABB's pockets. Nothing wrong with that.

That was my reply as well....

It sort of burns me that select people are able to buy an Allman collectable (money that goes to the band) that I can't

The fact that clear channel is behind it makes it even worse

I'd be willing to bet that Sanctuary Records is more to blame than Clear Channel.

The Hartford show was for sale. And, I daresay, it was a phenominal recording! I believe that CDR's for $20 is excessive, even if it comes with cool packaging, though.

If CC and ABB opt not to sell these shows outside of the venue, would that make them "out of print" recordings the day after the show? How would that effect the ability of others to get ahold of them? If they aren't being sold, would we be able to burn copies for our friends as long as we follow traditional trading rules?

The one drawback to buying the show was that I can't add it to my trade list. There is definitely something to being able to spread the jam! There is a particular excitement to me to be able to offer something of value to the community when a great recording comes along, and I feel like I was robbed of that! I will still enjoy the show, but I will continue to lament that I can't pass it on!

And as far as the Hartford show, I only saw one boom mike in the whole audience, and it looked like it was right next to the sound booth from where I was sitting, so it could have been an audience feed for the SBD recording. The only listing I see in the trade database is an A+ recording so it makes me think that's the CC version. So, AUD recordings of this show may never surface. How are the completists to get all the shows if the recordings aren't available?

Is there anyone in the organization that can answer our questions?
