He is an amazing player on both acoustic and electric. He also is a great songwriter. If you ever get a chance to see him run don't walk.

Richard Thompson is a wonderful songwriter. One of my favorite covers Bonnie Raitt does is his Dimming of the Day. Here's Richard doing this tune...

and some earlier Richard with his then-wife Linda ...

lovely!

Oh yes. Watched him develop over the years with the Fairports who played often in my neck of the woods in Bristol and Cardiff [UK]. I perhaps pathetically copied Richard's taste in footware [baseball boots] for years! My feet are a bloody mess now.

The guy has matured into a true giant evidenced again through an awsome show at the 2008 Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in SF. Is there a better song out there than ''Red Molly'' Also go see Reckless Kelly from Austin do that song. What a blast.

He's good. Saw him last year.
Folk music.
If you like that, just go and see him.
You won't be disappointed.

Been a fan since 'Turn Out The Lights' and went back and got his older stuff. Seen him live many times.

I don't own any of his music, but I really like what I hear when they play him on the radio. On WXPN's annual 885 countdown (this year's 'theme' was essential XPN songs), RT's 1952 Vincent Black Lightning was #1!!

BTW, his son Teddy is a talented musician as well. Saw him and his band at a festival over the summer.

Richard is a true guitar master on both acoustic and electric.

Great songwriter as well. He has so many wonderful songs, both solo and with his ex-wife Linda.

1952 Vincent Black Lightning always brings a tear to my eye.

One of my all-time favorite artists

I always loved his song 'Keep Your Distance'

If I cross your path again
Who knows here, who knows when
On some morning without number
On some highway without end
Don't grasp my hand and say
Fate has brought you here today
Fate is only fooling with us, friend

CHORUS
Keep your distance
Keep your distance
When I feel you close to me
What can I do but fall
Keep your distance
Keep your distance
With us it must be all or none at all

It's a desperate game we play
Throw our souls, our lives away
Wounds that can't be mended
And debts that can't be paid
O I played and I got stung
Now I'm biting back my tongue
and I'm sweeping out the footprints
Where I strayed

CHORUS

God Loves A Drunk

Will there be any bartenders up there in heaven?
Will the pubs never close? Will the glass never drain?
No more DTs and no shakes and no horrors
The very next morning, you feel right as rain

'Cause God loves a drunk, lowest of men
Like the dogs in the street and the pigs in the pen
But a drunk's only trying to get free of his body
And soar like an eagle high up there in heaven
His shouts and his curses they are just hymns and praises
To kick-start his mind now and then
O God loves a drunk, come raise up your glasses, amen

Does God really care for your life in the suburbs?
Your dull little life full of dull little things
And bring up the babies to be just like daddy
And maybe I'll be there when he gives out the wings

But God loves a drunk, although he's a fool
Oh he wets in his pants and he falls off his stool
And he can't hear the insults, and whispers go by him
As he leans in the doorway and he sings sally racket
He can't feel the cold rain beat down on his body
And soak through his clothes to the skin
O God loves a drunk, come raise up your glasses, amen

Will there be any pen-pushers up there in heaven?
Does crawling and wage-slaving win you God's love?
I pity you worms with your semis and pensions
If you think that'll get you to the kingdom above

Oh God loves a drunk, although he's a clown
Oh you can't help but laugh as he gags and falls down
But he don't give a curse for what people think of him
He screams at his demons alone in the darkness
He's staying alive for just one more pint bottle
Won't you throw him a few pennies, friend?
Ah God loves a drunk, for ever and ever, amen

1952 Vincent Black Lightning
Richard Thompson

Oh says Red Molly to James "That's a fine motorbike.
A girl could feel special on any such like"
Says James to Red Molly "My hat's off to you
It's a Vincent Black Lightning, 1952.
And I've seen you at the corners and cafes it seems
Red hair and black leather, my favourite colour scheme"
And he pulled her on behind and down to Boxhill they did ride

Oh says James to Red Molly "Here's a ring for your right hand
But I'll tell you in earnest I'm a dangerous man.
For I've fought with the law since I was seventeen,
I robbed many a man to get my Vincent machine.
Now I'm 21 years, I might make 22
And I don't mind dying, but for the love of you.
And if fate should break my stride
Then I'll give you my Vincent to ride"

"Come down, come down, Red Molly" called Sergeant McRae
"For they've taken young James Adie for armed robbery.
Shotgun blast hit his chest, left nothing inside.
Oh come down, Red Molly to his dying bedside"
When she came to the hospital, there wasn't much left
He was running out of road, he was running out of breath
But he smiled to see her cry
He said "I'll give you my Vincent to ride"

Says James "In my opinion, there's nothing in this world
Beats a 52 Vincent and a red headed girl.
Now Nortons and Indians and Greeves won't do,
Ah, they don't have a soul like a Vincent 52"
Oh he reached for her hand and he slipped her the keys
Said "I've got no further use for these.
I see angels on Ariels in leather and chrome,
Swooping down from heaven to carry me home"
And he gave her one last kiss and died
And he gave her his Vincent to ride.

When I Get To The Border
Richard and Linda Thompson

Dirty people take whatís mine
I can leave them all behind
They can never cross that line
When I get to the border

Sawbones standing at the door
Waiting Ďtill I hit the floor
He wonít find me anymore
When I get to the border

Monday morning, Monday morning, closing in on me
Iím packing up and Iím running away
To where nobody picks on me

If you see a box of pine
With a name that looks like mine
Just say I drowned in a barrel of wine
When I got to the border
When I got to the border

A one way ticketís in my hand
Heading for the chosen land
My troubles will all turn to sand
When I get to the border

Salty girl with the yellow hair
Waiting in that rocking chair
And if Iím weary I wonít care
When I get to the border

Monday morning, Monday morning, closing in on me
Iím packing up and Iím running away
To where nobody picks on me

The dusty road will smell so sweet
Paved with gold beneath my feet
And Iíll be dancing down the street
When I get to the border
When I get to the border

'bout time for me to vine some RT shows....

I saw him once where Roger McQuinn opened and after Rt played, Roger and Richard performed together. I was a magic musical moment.

Have seen him a bunch of times...solo and with a band. All excellent shows.
One stood out however - he played at Appel Farms festival in NJ a few years back (solo), and there was a woman standing on the side of the stage signing all his lyrics (like that little person on the TV, lol). After a few songs, RT with his wild wit, decided to sign a bawdy song with breaks in it so he could watch the signer try and put these "difficult" words into sign. An absolute riot!!!
and the man can flat out play a guitar

zeke
