As we all know, the best thing to do in a recession is to raise taxes. Here is a partial list of what Governor Patterson is doing to the middle class of New York, merely a hint of what is to come nationwide as this may be coming to your state soon;

* An "iTunes tax" of 4 percent on videos, music or pictures downloaded from the Internet.

* A 4 percent tax on taxi, limo and bus rides. That means a $10 cab ride would cost 40 cents more.

* A 4 percent entertainment tax on tickets to movies, concerts and sporting events. That would add nearly 50 cents to a $12 movie ticket or $1.80 to the cheapest $44.50 seat at a Knicks game.

* The tax on beer increases 24 cents per gallon, or more than double the current rate, which means about 30 cents a case.

* An 18 percent tax on nondiet soft drinks, which aims to reduce child obesity. A $1.50 can of Pepsi would then cost at least 25 cents more.

* A 4 percent tax on cable TV and satellite services, raising a $100 bill by $4.

* Hiking the cost of "personal" services - including haircuts, manicures, pedicures, massages and gym memberships - by 4 percent.

* A 4 percent sales tax on clothing and shoes under $500, except for two weeks out of the year.

* Elimination of the law that caps the state sales tax on gasoline at 8 cents per gallon.

* Boosting the average vehicle registration fee for drivers by $11, from $44 to $55. Fees for new or renewed licenses also would increase 25 percent, or increase from $50 to about $62 to renew a license over eight years.

In addition, all drivers would have to get new, "reflectorized" license plates at a fee of $25 each.

All of which means that the neighboring states will see an increase in their sales of non-diet soda, chips, beer, and gasoline sales.

Why is it states that get into financial trouble always seem to be "blue" states? I may be wrong, and it may just be a coincidence, but that's what it seems like.

I live in what is usually a red state. We have a huge budget problem this year.

We live in a state with a republican governor and he was on television last night talking about budget cuts that are going to have to be made.....of course education was on the list. Don't these people know that our young people are our greatest asset? And yet education is always close to the top of the list of budget cuts. This doesn't exactly fit in iwth DFC's tax raising regime but he is speaking from the center of his own little world.

Considering that the source of this economic meltdown is New York City and Washington DC, those two places should be taxed by the rest of the country.

True on all counts, Ann. I don't quite understand the purpose of this thread except to inflame or continue the dem bashing. New York has had a democrat governor for some time now. We now have an elected but not-yet-serving Democratic POG and as a result of this (?) or the Democratic governor who has been in office for some time suddenly (?) state taxes are rising in New York - all part of a 'regime' being spawned by the scary VLWC* . And even though currently cost of the type of services listed in this initial post vary greatly from state-to-state and always have (I have yet to see how things like sales, hotel/motel, etc taxes in my neighboring states have anything to do with same in my own) well we can all expect to face something similar in our futures. I'm filing this under don't-need-to-know.

I just got this in an email. I had to share it.

Back in 1990, the U.S. Government seized the
"Mustang Ranch" brothel in Nevada for tax evasion
... and, as required by law, tried to run it until the money
that was owed to the I.R.S. could be collected.

They failed and it closed.

Now, you are entrusting the economy of your country... and
over $700 Billion Dollars... to a pack of nit-wits who couldn't
make money running a whorehouse and selling booze.

Now if that doesn't make you nervous, what does?

That may be the single best example of why not to entrust government with money

Thanks for sharing Ann!

I'm surprised at the ignorance in regard to the fiscal mess in New York state. Truth be told, NYS has had the highest taxes nationally in many categories for over a decade. It also creates new means of taxation nearly every budget year. Given the governor for the previous 12 years, up until the short-lived Spitzer administration, was a Republican (George Pataki), and the state Senate, up until the election in November, was controlled for over 40 years by the Republican party(the latest majority speaker being the about to be federally indicted Republican Joe Bruno), I guess the case could be made that there's been a Republican tax raising regime in Albany much longer than the 8 months or so Patterson has been on the job.

I'm really surprised you aren't more versed in such things given your extensive travels in the "North Country." And to Patterson's credit, he attempted to slash the current budget back in early November in a very publicized meeting in Albany in which nothing was accomplished. And guess who thwarted his efforts? The Senate Republicans led by the lame duck Republican Majority leader (until January that is).....
