This sort of stuff happens all over the country right? Not only Jacksonville right?

Curious to hear your thoughts on this...personally I feel the church is going a bit too far here.

Woman Says Church Threatening To Make Sins Public

POSTED: 9:25 pm EST December 15, 2008

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A divorced Jacksonville woman said her former church has threatened to "go public with her sins" and tell the congregation about her sexual relationship with her new boyfriend.

Rebecca Hancock said harassment from Grace Community Church in Mandarin over her sex life caused her to leave, but she said that didn't put an end to the problem. She said she received a letter from the church's elders telling her the church plans to make her personal life very public.

"I'm basically run out. I'm the church harlot," Hancock said.

The 49-year-old said she has been dating a man for a while and she said members of the congregation at Grace Community Church haven't been happy about the relationship.

"Because I have a boyfriend that I'm involved with … to not be married to that person is a sin," Hancock said.

She said the issue caused her to leave the church. However, she said the church has not let go of her.

The letter Hancock received from the church states that because she has refused to end her sexual relationship with her boyfriend, "you leave us with no other choice but to carry out the commands of the Lord Jesus Christ" … "In accordance with Matthew 18:17 we intend to 'tell it to the church.'"

"On January 4, my sins will be told to the church, publicly, with my children sitting in the church and my friends," Hancock said.

The pastor of Grace Community Church, Dr. T. Scott Christmas, told Channel 4 he had no comment.

Pastors with whom Channel 4 spoke on Monday said announcing a sin to a congregation is not abnormal. They said it's written in the Bible to punish sinners who continue to sin.

The difference in Hancock's case is that she has left the church, and the pastors said that's is usually where punishment ends.

Despite the church's letter stating its biblical backing, Hancock said she has backed out of the church and they should leave her alone because she is no longer a member.

"I am a Christian, and that will never change. My relationship with Jesus has to do with me and Jesus, and he knows my heart," Hancock said.

The book of Matthew does have three steps that the church talked about in taking action against a member who is in sin.

Hancock said she is now attending a different church, and said she is planning to send a letter to Grace Community Church to make sure it's understood that she no longer a member.

Somehow I don't the people of this church are what Jesus had in mind to bear the title Christians...

I've read similar stories to this one over the years. I think it's just wrong.

Well, it seems I am confused by this... She says she is concerned because the church is threatening to "go public," yet she is being quote in an article that is being reproduced online and, most likely, in print as well.

If, on the other hand, the church decides to take her relationship details and make them public with a view to punishing her, then it sounds like she will have one hell of a lawsuit based on defamation of character. If I were her, I would dare them to do it.

I was a member of a Southern Baptist church in Georgia that sent a letter to every member of the church concerning the sin being committed by a member, a prominent dentist in town, announcing the day and time the matter would be discussed. This was a big church with a TV ministry. One of my relatives who no longer attended the church got the letter, and paraded it all over town. He was fooling with someone who was not his wife. His wife had approached the church about it, to hold him accountable, etc. There was a special meeting, for members only, to discuss how to deal with this man's transgressions...very well-attended, as I recall.

I don't think it's right to do that. Being held accountable is one thing. Being publicly humiliated and shamed is another. She needs to seek another church.

John 8:7:

7 But when they persisted in asking Him, He straightened up, and said to them, "He who is without sin among you, let him be the first to throw a stone at her."

When they were all gone, he said to her, "Woman, is there no one left to condemn you?"
"No," she replied.
"Then niether do I. Go your way and sin no more."

I did go to Mabel White, but this was a church in Warner Robins.

My Mom sent me the newspaper articles when Steve "Judge and Jury" Johnson was caught with his hand in the porno jar.

Here's another log for the fire...

Matthew 7:4:
Or how can you say to your brother, 'Let me take the speck out of your eye,' when there is the log in your own eye?

I think it would be allright to air this woman's sins as long as they aired all of the sins of each of member of the congregation....

This is just one of the many reasons I can't and won't be affiliated with 99.9% of the so-called churches...

I choose to follow this advice from the New Testament:

Matthew 7:1, Judge not that ye be not judged.

Matthew 7:1
Judge not, that ye be not judged.

Luke 6:37
Judge not, and ye shall not be judged.

Romans 2:1
Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest: for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest doest the same things.

Romans 14:10
But why dost thou judge thy brother? or why dost thou set at nought thy brother? for we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ.

James 4:12
Who art thou that judgest another?

I'm confused.........

Leviticus 19:15
In righteousness shalt thou judge thy neighbour.

John 7:24
Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.

1 Corinthians 2:15
But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man.

1 Corinthians 5:12-13
For what have I to do to judge them also that are without? do not ye judge them that are within? But them that are without God judgeth. Therefore put away from among yourselves that wicked person.

1 Corinthians 6:2-3
Do ye not know that the saints shall judge the world? and if the world shall be judged by you, are ye unworthy to judge the smallest matters? Know ye not that we shall judge angels? how much more things that pertain to this life?.

So did the woman go to a church where premarital sexual relationships are accepted?

Will this new church merely look the other way?

There's nothing really un-Christian about bringing something like this before a church or at least elders and so on. I don't think this is a subject for the entire church though. Different denominations of the Christian Church deal with a person's spiritual problems differently. It's a stronger church closer to the core of Christianity that would make the woman's sexual relations a subject of reprimand or public humiliation. Actually, such a church would not call it humiliation but they are surely casting shame on this woman's behavior, and she will be used as an example to others in the church. Since the woman is very upset with the church's hardline approach, and since she is not going to follow their lead then it is BEST that she finds a church with a more tolerant or perhaps less Biblical or watered down set of beliefs.

But some just want to call the Church's stance here bigotry and un-Christian behavior. I'm sure the church was not going to simply judge. The church wants to forgive and to redirect this woman into a closer relationship with Jesus Christ.

Scriptures can be found and quoted to support what I have said, and I'm sure other scriptures can be found to cast doubt on the activities of the church.

Personally, I'm not sure if the church is wrong Biblically or not. I just believe Christian teachers can debate from scripture just how to deal with the woman's sin. But the Bible would consider this SIN, that much is pretty clear. This is one reason people don't like Christians. Everything is a SIN. Life can be narrow in a Christian church, and to widen a life people find other churches who will not mind their personal lives. People will find churches who pretty much don't care what a person does. Some churches don't care if they never see you or know you on a personal level.

Sounds like deano's kind of place.

How can a virgin concern himself with other folks' sex lives???

Absolutely right.

Another thing, what about the guy in this case? Even if there was some church law to allow what they want to do, if this guy isn't a member of this church, he has a grounds for a slam dunk lawsuit.

Yeah,

I can see a slam dunk lawsuit and I hope they get every penny and then some...

And I'm not the kind of person that would sue....

If that church is gonna' be stupid, they'd better be tough....

Why avoid 99.9% of all churches over something like this when certainly 90%+ wouldn't do what is being reported? (anyone checked to see if this is even true?)

I have no reason to believe its not true Tim. The story is being reported here locally, Grace Community Church is in the phone book.

But your point is correct, certainly not the norm as far as churches go, sorry folks are using this very incident as reason not to attend a church.

You are correct here, Tim ... the majority of churches would not be so closed-minded and vicious - certainly not in the name of Jesus Christ.
