I'm sure the response on the DP forum was to get Blackmore back in the band. In this case it would be bring back..............

You may hear bring Blackmore back from a few but Steve Morse handles the job quite nicely. As does Warren and Derek so I don't see any need to bring up yet another Dickey thread. But some may disagree. I think that ship has sailed personally.

What they need to do is play more shows this year.

I am sure that the West coast people will speak up about some shows for them.

Perhaps play longer into the year and play some arenas even after the cold weather hits. This may not work for the members with other projects but it sounds good to me. Not limiting it to the summer months could help getting right across the country.

More Canadian shows including a return to the Ottawa Blues Fest.

Open up the setlist to include some rarely played ABB songs and not just some covers.

New material would be nice. Obviously no new record is on the way but they could still play some new stuff.

very good post, canadian mule!! It would be awesome to see them play more shows and even winter dates,I don't know how derek and warren do it with their schedules.
They certainly are not afraid to work. bringing out songs they rarely play would be nice.

I didn't say it...you did. Steve Morse is an incredible guitarist, and was born here in my city. I've seen the band with Steve, and he does a great job, but he has to use Blackmore's tone when playing with DP. He is also playing Blackmore's licks, and there's much more to Steve Morse then that. The same can be said for Warren, and Derek, but they get to use more of their own tones. I don't have a bad thing to say about the current ABB lineup, but I would like to see FRB involved in their 40th. It's time for the founding members to get over it.

Won't hijack the thread but I will respectfully disagree completely. Steve's tone is nothing like Ritchie's from both an equipment standpoint and sound or tone. He made a point of not doing that and over time it has been accepted.

Also Steve has never tried to play Ritchie's leads at all. He never has tried to go that note for note route and it was on purpose to not just be some hired gun in a cover band.

I have seen all the various Deep Purple lineups over the years many times over. The current DP has its' own sound variation and the difference is Steve.

Agree that there is more to Steve. I have been lucky enough to catch him with various acts and many times solo. Super nice guy who is easy going.

But sound wise Steve and Ritchie are far apart in or out of DP.

Funny how everyone else doesn't have to go work with ex-coworkers that they parted ways with or remarry their ex-wives because others think they should.

I would love a jam with Dickey and maybe they will some day but I wouldn't hold your breathe.

My last post on this. I know Steve Morse, and have done bookings for the Dixie Dregs. Sometimes to meet the bills, a guitarist has to do what they have to do. This was the same deal with Steve when he played with Kansas. It is NOT the Steve Morse tone he uses in his solo, original work.

I agree but it is NOT Ritchie's Blackmore's tone either. It is a heavier variation of his 'solo' tone. Met him many times also and have discussed this very issue. Also have a friend who has worked plenty with DP over the years.

Now back to the ABB.

"Obviously no new record is on the way but they could still play some new stuff"

I would have to disagree. Interviews last year had Gregg stating they had plenty of songs, and choosing which ones is the trick. Plus, Mule has a new one coming, Warren solo, DTB also. I would bet that a new record is put out before 2010, which is what I want from the band next year.

Warren said recently that we should all chill out on the "they are breaking up after next year" crap, and they are going for an all-out Beacon run and then heavy touring. I love the Dead, but please "music god" dont let them tour together. Between the fans, plus the fact that you could put anyone alive back in to Jerrys spot and still not be close to the chemistry and improvisational skills that the ABB possess. That being said, Im all in favor of the Dead opening for the ABB, but I can only hope.

PS- After the State College incident, I would rather hear Phil & Friends w/Warren than the Dead w/Warren. NO ONE CAN SING IN THE DEAD!! Doesnt that clearly appear to anyone else? Jackie Greene sings extremely well, and if they wont let Warren sing or play to his abilities, then he should tell old Bobby to **** off. Just my opinion, as always.

Can I just "third" Manitou's and Hippy69's posts for a UK/European tour? Warren, Derek, Gregg have all played Europe in the last 2 years, I spoke to Oteil at the Beacon in 06 and he said he would love to come to the UK (for the curries!), so where's the sticking point? Not expecting it to happen if they don't even play the West Coast in their home country, though! And some new material would be nice. And give the ok to the latest Archive release. And get a pro-quality Duane era DVD out (hats off to our HtW brothers who have done brilliantly with producing and sharing what they've got to sustain the appetite meantime). And give me front row loge tickets for the Beacon on 26th March 2009..............

So did the interviews from the few years before that. The truth is that Gregg always responds that they are working on it. They have some songs that were not used on HTN which Warren has stated and maybe a couple of other partials. They have no contract. I would not hold my breathe for an album in the next year. I would love it but it won't happen.

Was thinking the same thing.

I am starting to think HTN will be the last album they put out.

what do the ABB need to do next?

I don't believe they "need" to do anything. The fact that they are still performing because they want to, is good enough for me. I will be a fan as long as I can hear the embodiment of Duane's original concept and the music is played with skill and emotion. A new album would be a true gift, a sign that the creative fire still burns. When this music that we all love called the Allman Brothers Band comes to an end, Imho, it will be because the players have outgrown it and their lives have taken another course or because they just can't bring it anymore, not to their standards.
Until that time comes, we have the Band and their solo projects. So sit back and enjoy the music... it's all we really need.
