An Unorganised Ramble From The Happiest Man On The Planet:

(hope to find time for a more indept review and posting some pics; but have to make an
account on flickr or Photobucket first)

Just returned home from the most awesome weekend of music ever. Just incredible. Was waiting 17 years to see the ABB again and the build up of expectations could have
easily caused a bit dissapointment but hell no....what a mindblowing show. The list of guests onstage is (still) unbelievable! I expected a 60-75 minutes set and hoped for a 90 minutes set but it turned out to be approx. 110 minutes. It was difficult to hold back tears during the show because it was so overwhelming. Did my best but completely lost it
when JPJ came on stage for Dazed. Had a great spot on the floor at approx 10 yards from the stage, most of the time dead-center. It all ended at friggin' 04:20 hours!
By the time we made it to the motel the sun was almost coming up!!!

Before i go on any further: a million thanks to ALANWOODS for all the help and patience.

Met so many HTW regulars at the Civic Center and at the other venues and it was great to meet face to face. Also met dozens of other fans and XMAS-jammers so my mind is a blur right now. Not much sleep in the last 5 days and when i got of the plane i couldn't properly stand/walk on my left leg and still can't. I give it some rest and a visit to the doctor might be in order. I hope i do not have to call in sick tomorrow because work is pilin' already.

Everything started properly (after a nice afternoon in down town rainy Asheville) with a huge surprise when my buddy Philip and i made it to the Pre-Jam !!!
Here's a setlist i found but it contains some typos and maybe is not complete/correct.
For instance "Can't See You" was "Can't You See" (MTB). And JPJ did play on "I Can't Quit You". What an awesome night of music (from 18:00 hours to 01:00 hours). Orange Peel is a great venue. I guess there were about 400 people in attendence but the venue could easily hold more. When i came in Oteil was right in front of me! It was very easy to find a good spot. And the brews were great too!

The people in Asheville are awesome and extremely friendly and polite. For instance:
I went to the Civic Center on Thursday to ask if i could already pick up my two day passes
(90 minutes in advance was a bit of a problem because i wanted to be at Stella Blue).
I ordered them "International Will Call" so the lady asked me were we where from and was surprised we came over all the way from the Netherlands just for the XMAS-Jam. Her collegue located the tickets and another staff member overheard the conversation. He went out of the ticket office and into the hall to shake our hands and welcome us to the USA and Asheville in particular. Simply Awesome.

Met plenty of fine musicians as well. Colonel Bruce Hampton, Kofi, Oteil, Mike Mattison.
And while checkin' in and boarding my return flight to Atlanta the always humble and talkative Ron Holloway. Ron had some great news too: Susan will be returning to Europe in the first half of 2009 !!! Jorgen from the Mule and Robben Ford were checkin' in next to us for another flight.

TO BE CONTINUED

Great initial review, ABBDutchFan! So glad you were able to make this trip from far-away and have such a wonderful music experience! I got a big smile reading your post - sounds like you and your travelling companion had a great time in Asheville!

Glad to see you had such a great time!!!! Sounds like it lived up to your expectations. I know looking at all of those amazing setlists form all of the amazing musicians and bands was making me wish I were there. The JPJ Mountain Jam with the ABB would have been worth the price of admission IMO. Can't wait for my Mule fix on the 30th and NYE!!!

Roger,

You're more than welcome for anything that I did to make the trip for Phillip and you as enjoyable as possible.

I get a real kick when I see that other people will go to such an effort to be somewhere and enjoy the music I almost take for granted since you have seen them last.

You will find that most everyone in this family feels the same way.

We did get one "Y'all a great bunch!".

ABBDutchfan,
Great review. I think we were going into Stella Blue at the same time. I heard some folks talking with a decidely non-Southern accent and I was thinking my Philly accent didn't stand out so much. I'm a liittle shy so I didn't introduce myself. Wish I made your acquantince. Hope to meet you at the Beacon.

Roger, I think I should add that your (and Philip's) happiness was contagious! Every time we bumped into you two, you raised the level of excitement and enjoyment for everyone around you...

It was truly a pleasure to meet you both, and I think I'm safe in saying "A good time was had by all "!

ps- Please thank Phillip for the t-shirt for me, it fit great and I wore it on the ride home Sunday!
pps- I had a shorter flight home on Monday morning, but my right leg is going numb!
