Bob Dylan is #1(Music and lyrics) then:

Pete Townshend
Paul Simon
Ray Davies
Robbie Roberston
Frank Zappa
in no particular order

Lennon/McCartney
Jagger/Richards
Garcia/Hunter
Are great but I am talking about individuals who write both Music and lyrics

John Lennon and Paul McCartney probably belong on the individual list too

I agree with your list, but I think you know I am partial to Ray Davies. There is a list of over 600 songs written by Davies on Dave Emlen’s Kinks website. Prolific, yes; boring, no. Ray has written so many meaningful songs it’s incredible; songs you’ll never hear on the radio.

Check out this song “Holiday” that he wrote. The man has been in and out of rehab, attempted suicide, and has just been an overall mess his entire life. His genius is on display in this song. The words are a sarcastic reflection of his life experiences presented in a witty and clever manner.

The great Bernie Taupin for Elton John.

Carole King

James Taylor

Barry Gibb - Like it or not he is credited to some of the most popular songs EVER.

Townes Van Zandt

John Prine and Steve Goodman

At least these are some of my favorites in whatever era. They just write damn good songs.

Rock era? You mean like, rock and roll? How could you leave Chuck Berry off of that list?

JIMI was a brand new songwriter when he formed the Experience. but somehow he penned classic after classic, not only for his magnificent debut, but for all his albums and projects, all the way thru his short but amazing career.

Mark Knopfler - and he's still putting out a new album every 18-24 months. He's in the studio now, working on recording new tunes, following his tour this past spring and summer.
