Seeing red over scarlet-marked homework

SYDNEY (Reuters) – Teachers using red pen to mark students' work could be harming their psyche as the color is too aggressive, according to education strategies drafted by an Australian state government.

The "Good Mental Health Rocks" kit, which was distributed this month to about 30 schools in Queensland state, offers strategies such as "don't mark in red pen (which can be seen as aggressive) - use a different color."

Other tips include structuring time for peer tutoring every day, apologizing to students when necessary and asking students to conduct a "personal skills audit" where they focus on their individual strengths rather than their weaknesses.

The kit, designed to help Queensland teachers address mental health in the classroom, suggests social and emotional wellbeing has been linked to young people's schooling, among other things.

The education aid has sparked a row in parliament, with deputy opposition leader Mark McArdle calling it "kooky, loony, loopy lefty policies."

But Health Minister Stephen Robertson, whose department devised the kit, said youth suicide was a serious issue.

"If mental health professionals determine that as one of a number of strategies teachers should consider, then I'll support them every day of the week," he told reporters recently. "This is not a matter for ridicule, this is serious."

According to some Australian mental health groups, the greatest number of people with mental illness are aged between 18 and 24 years, with 14 percent of Australian children and adolescents suffering from some sort of illness.

Boys are slightly more likely to experience mental health problems than girls and depression is one of the most common conditions in young people and increases during adolescence, the website of mental health group Mindframe said.

When I used to review various work of others, I would mark the changes in red pen so they could be seen easily. Then someone mentioned that it looked angry, so I switched to purple for a week. That went over like a fart in church, so I went to blue.

In my 'progressive,' urban school system they no longer fail highschoolers but rather give them multiple chances to make up the work by giving them an "H" for 'held.' This so they can continue to claim these certain droputs as students and thus collect their federal funding to help pay bureaucrats and pensioners. This AFTER they radically dumbed down graduation requirements.

The left in this country has been running the school systems for decades and have much to answer for. If they'd just admit "We want them to stay stupid so they'll automatically vote democrat" at least I'd have a modicum of respect for them.

I think the red pen has a place in the grand scheme of homeword and it's stupid things like this that's hurting the education systems. No child left behind is a joke. It has come to mean passing everyone whether they've learned the work or not.

I don't live in a world where Bush has been running the school systems into the ground for the last fifty years. The left has been doing that, state by state, city by city. NCLB was designed to weed out the legion of redundant, useless, corrupt and ineffective democrat bureaucrats ruining the American Public Schools. That's why it was "underfunded." Unfortunately it didn't work.

Show me where I've claimed to be "enlightened."

Show me where I've claimed to be "progressive."

Show me. Find it. Post it. C'mon, back it up. Those are assumptions and lies. You are stating that those two words describe my outlook. Show me where I stated that. Make me a liar. Show me where I claimed to be either of those two things. Can you do that?

In the progressive/liberal academic world where I teach, Ohio State U, they long ago switched from the letter "F" for failing/failure to "E", so as not to stigmatize the 'honoree'.

Gee, no wonder so many students think they never fail when the system and some in it think that awarding a real grade is damanaging to the pysche

The left in this country has been running the school systems for decades and have much to answer for. If they'd just admit "We want them to stay stupid so they'll automatically vote democrat" at least I'd have a modicum of respect for them.

Anybody wonder why we lag behind other countries in academic achievement? I think if we throw some money at the problem that might work.

There is an appalling lack of acountability being fostered by the school system. You make an F....you should get an F. You don't do the work to pass, you don't pass. We built a whole country on the premise that you are responsible for your own actions....I wonder what happened!
