RIP to my loving, dear, sweet neighbor & friend.A musician that will forever be remembered for his great music with The Band & as a solo performer.Even more important,Rick will be remembered for the quality of person he was--fun,the life of the party, engaging & sincerely,a warm person. He suffered his own share of personal tragedies quietly, but they left a large hole in his soul--it never detracted from his goodness.

i miss you & love you Rick--the town isn't the same without you...."got a minute" his favorite saying---usually warmup words for a long conversation...

A public memorial was held Wednesday, Dec. 15th at 2:00pm, 1999 at The Bearsville Theatre Bearsville, New York

The memorial for Rick Danko took place in Woodstock. Rick was well loved in Woodstock and the surrounding area not only because he was a member of The Band but also because he regularly performed for local charities and helped many people on a one-to-one basis. He had planned to play his annual Christmas benefit aiding a local women's shelter next week. Many locals attended the service as well as several members of Woodstock's music community including John Sebastian, Happy and Artie Traum, Jules Shear, Kate Taylor, Rick's friend and legendary blues man Vince Martin, John Simon, Tom Pacheco and Shredni Vollmer who had been recording with Rick on his new solo record. The memorial included Robbie Robertson reading a very moving "Note to Rick" which he wrote for his departed bandmate and friend. To conclude the ceremony they all joined in a stirring rendition of "Amazing Grace".

Rick's grave now has a nice Headstone, but the photos were to large to post.

thank you,Kenny--this is a terribly difficult day--the pics you posted--very special---the last pic was given out at the memorial service--i still have it...i recall sitting in front of Robbie & behind Tony Garnier(Dylan's bass player the last 16-17 years)---Robbie spoke nicely,Tony played,& others spoke & played music....we ate at the Bearsville restaurant prior to the service with Levon,Jimmy Weider,& other locals & friends from through the years...the entire town was in tears...no big grave stone today, just a small stone in the ground that says "Rick Danko:Forever young,Forever loved...Rick is buried next to his late son,Eli....EC's letter was read at the service.....Rick was particularly sweet to kids & he was always lifting everyone's spirits...i still miss walking in town & bumping into him at music events, shopping,or just hanging out at different spots in town...

Very Nice Tribute. After reading all of this I feel VERY fortunate to have seen him perform a couple of times with The Band, back in 1991 and 1992. I've been listening to the Danko/Fjeld/Andersen album, Live on Breeze Hill and Times Like These lately. The world needs more people like Rick Danko, that's for sure.

Forever Young

May God bless and keep you always,
May your wishes all come true,
May you always do for others
And let others do for you.
May you build a ladder to the stars
And climb on every rung,
May you stay forever young,
Forever young, forever young,
May you stay forever young.

May you grow up to be righteous,
May you grow up to be true,
May you always know the truth
And see the lights surrounding you.
May you always be courageous,
Stand upright and be strong,
May you stay forever young,
Forever young, forever young,
May you stay forever young.

May your hands always be busy,
May your feet always be swift,
May you have a strong foundation
When the winds of changes shift.
May your heart always be joyful,
May your song always be sung,
May you stay forever young,
Forever young, forever young,
May you stay forever young.

This performance says it all :

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dzohde-9WNw

The build up to the jam at the end is amazing. Some very cool, gritty slide work also. Anyone know who the guitarist is ?

One of my favorite parts of the last Waltz is when Danko is playing a tape of this song in the studio. He's totally focused on the music.

Hey thanks, this is a great thread. Looking forward to getting home because I can't access youtube at work. Nice to see the picture of him playing with Professor Louie. I actually hired Professor Louie and the Crommatix for my wedding band. They were great and even threw in a handful of Band songs including one of my favorite ones, It Makes No Difference...one of my favorite Rick Danko songs.
