I was listening to NPR this afternoon when a program came on with an incredible guitar player switching between several styles at the drop of a hat. I thought at first he was a Hawaiian slack key guitarist.

But, actually, this amazing musician doesn't really play guitar at all ... he plays Ukelele! Find out about Jake Shimabukuro here.

That clip gave me chillbumps, hankpipes!

I have searched out a few more -- this guy is really worth it. I have placed these in sort of an order and have also indicated the influence behind the tune. There are dozens of Jake clips on YouTube, but I have tried to select only those with the best camera work and best sound.

This guy is unreal!

he definitely has some talent. he actually toured with the flecktones a bit in 02, 05, and even 06 i believe. did a little studio work with them as well.

Jake makes the summer circuit outdoor once in a while and I believe he is a marathon runner also.

Yes, Jake is a marathon runner -- in fact, just yesterday he was at the Hawaii marathon.

I also discovered that he played here in Atlanta recently at one of my favorite venues. I only wish I'd known ...

I first heard of him when I moved here to Hawaii. He is a very talented player...some locals aren't very fond of him though.

Sorry, bobbyr, but I watched both clips all the way through and didn't get it. Charlie can sure play a lot of notes -- but no chill bumps.

Hey now TheOtherOne, why isn't Jake popular with some locals?

Some locals think he's too busy and different from how traditional uke is meant to be played. Don't get me wrong a lot of people love him. There's a video on youtube where he sits in with a local Hawaiian band and plays on some local classics. The crowd digs him. There are some local guys though that feel he's too far from the traditional style. Think of it as if Steve Vai went to Mississippi and threw his shredder licks over Blind Willie McTell songs (okay I don't know if Willie is from MS but you get the point).

Here is that Hawaiian video:

Jake Shimabukuro - Noho Paipai featuring Makaha Sons
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=0Ixat-E6bX0&feature=related

I loved it and it looked like the crowd did as well! Of course, I have a fondness for Hawaiian music since I lived there for a little while. It seemed like the Hawaiian musicians were very supportive of Jake.

This is a very young (high-schoolish?) Jake with short hair and glasses!

One thing about Jake is that he is no haole -- he was born on the Islands. So it's not like some shredder coming to town to tell them how it's done. He's a homegrown prodigy.

I too love Hawaiian music. I took a class in Slack key guitar with a very cool guy who's been everywhere. I guess back in the 60s or 70s they did concerts in the Diamondhead crater and they always had local guys open for the big acts. When Santana came around the guy I did the class with got to open.

I personally think Jake is really awesome..haven't had a chance to catch him play though.
