This isn't an attempt to start another series of debates, etc. But oftentimes posters declare what the ABB actually does. So here's my two cents' worth:

Duane brought in rock and roll (he loved Chuck Berry) and mainstream jazz (ditto for Miles Davis and John Coltrane)
Gregg brought in R&B (he loved Ray Charles)
Butch brought in some folk (the 31st of February was mainly folk, I think)
Dickey brought in string music (whether bluegrass flavored or even classical -- he said once in an interview that they'd drawn a bit on Brahms)
Jaimoe, more jazz, plus more R&B -- he played with Percy Sledge. Otis Redding as well?
Berry added some hard-core Chicago blues (I heard an early 1970 Fillmore concert where Duane introduced "Hoochie Coochie Man", and Berry commented "I bet they never heard it like this before!")

And more.

Basically, they played Allman Brothers Band music, something nobody else has ever managed to equal, let alone surpass.

I like to throw it under the umbrella of "awesome".

Same here, both in regards to Bill's post and to ABB music -- which Zambi some tome time back came up with a great name for
"Bluesion"

Gregg Allman like to call it "a progression of the Blues".

Absolutely Not!

38. Special
Lynyrd Skynyrd
Molly Hatchett
Black Oak Arkansas

These guys are the epitome of "Southern rock"... Other than being from the south, the ABB have zero in common with that label. Listen to the band's interpretation of Elmore James'.. "Done Somebody Wrong"... or T-Bone Walker's "Stormy Monday" ... That is the blues, pure and simple...move now to Dickey's "Liz Reed".. Jazz, free form Jazz...Imho... The only time the ABB dabbled in "Southern Rock".. was during the forgettable Arista years.

The Allmans are a improvisational Blues/Jazz outfit...

Just my .O2

Derek Trucks is from Jacksonville, does that make his band's music "Southern rock"?

I don't think so

It's a genre all its own...perhaps the Dead would be in it? But they are a sound unto themselves - at least the original lineup was.

Somehow I never think of ABB as Southern Rock. I don't know how you would classify their music as a type ... Blues/Jazz/Rock?

Much like Bill Graham said of the Grateful Dead,it's also true of the Allman Brothers Band:
"They're not the best at what they do; they're the only ones that do what they do."

Duke Ellington once said,"there's only two kinds of music; good music and the other kind."

The ABB is definitely the former!

ABB is a white blues band with some Beatles, Dylan and Stones thrown into the soup.

Forgettable yes, but Southern Rock? Those 2 albums are as far from southern rock as you can get. That's funny, I have never herd anyone say that.
