Really having to fight to get some holiday spirit this year. It's not that I'm not aware of how blessed I truely am for family, friends, etc. I don't really want for anything. Maybe it's the hard time folks are having. I do some small things to help others, wish I could do so much more. What makes your heart sing this time of year? Suggestions to help mine and others????

I always make an effort to donate something to Toys for Tots or a similar organization. I honestly don't have any extra cash most years, but I know that instead of giving several gifts to each member of my family, I cut back by one per person and give it to a kid who doesn't have anything. Last year, our local newspaper sponsored "Elves for the Elderly" for older people who don't have any family to celebrate the holidays with. My mom and I adopted a 96 year old man and sent him blankets and hot cocoa and a few other small things to brighten his holiday.

This year, I'm donating through work. The university I work for is doing a toy drive and donating all of the toys to underpriviledged children in West Philadelphia, the area where the university is located. And my VP told us that for each toy donated by our division, she will match it. Which I think is pretty incredible.

Julie, I appologise for not posting something sooner as I have been trying to think of a way to help. It's tough indeed because it seems everyone has lost touch of what really matters most!! Good health, love, family... not I want this and will you get me that!!! Sheesh!! I really wish we could enjoy a nice meal like with Thanksgiving instead of all the hustle and all of stressing over what to get who!!! In the end, it really is the music that gets me through and not just the music of our favorite band in the land but the XMAS music. There are some beautiful songs out there except for the ones overplayed! LOL! I make sure to pull out all my XMAS CD's and play them in the house and in my car to help with the mood of the Season. I focus on the elderly at this time of year because it is so hard to get around and many are alone. They are the ones who seem to really appreciate all the little gestures and ya know what, they deserve it! My friend Gail started delivering meals on wheels to area folks who are disabled and elderly. I want to go with her on a few Saturdays with some little token to hand out that may help lift their spirits. Also, like Blueeyedgirl we have a Toys for Tots every year too which is coming up next weekend!!

I'm having a hard time with Christmas this year myself. It will never be the same without my sister who passed away last summer. My baby sister too. Judy was a Christmas person. She started her Christmas shopping in January. She would search the catalogs to find something unusual for all of us. Everybody would get two presents from her, one was a funny gag gift and a unique gift she searched for just for for you. Sometimes you couldn't tell which was which. LOL I miss her so much and it just doesn't seem very cheery without her. I wanted to go away for Christmas but Sergio wanted to stay home. I wish I could get some Christmas spirit.

Julie you are doing something wonderful for those children. I hope you can get your spirit up. All the best to you and I love you, Sister.

Julie - sounds to me like you have a lot of loving, holiday spirit and that you open that big heart to others. I was touched by what I saw in the BD thread - that you help out with an annual Christmas party for a local organization that reaches 300 kids. That is a wonderful thing.

After 7+ years I am having the holidays revisit my place. I've always had them in my heart but I went through a spell where I didn't decorate my home and celebrate like I used to. Went out this weekend and got a tree and am doing a couple of Christmas celebrations for different sides of the family. Am looking forward to having everyone in my house and cooking for people and enjoying each others company. If I do not dump the Christmas tree again like I did this morning (1 hour to clean up mess and get tree back in stand - 30 minutes to calm the resulting stress meltdown ) and if I get that floor put back together in my bathroom before company comes, I think things will be a success! (I've decided to go with the flow whatever happens...)

I like to help out with Toys for Tots - my place of work offers a lot of sponsership there. Also, my immediate team works a Habitat for Humanity house every year. This year we are playing Santa for the people who received the keys to the house we completed work on. We will get a wish list and do shopping based on their needs. We usually try to get some corporate sponsorships to help 'sweeten the pot', also. I'm have a like-new entertainment center that I was going to give to Salvation Army or Goodwill that I've been holding onto in case they have a place and a need in their new home for it.

What makes my heart sing during the holidays are little things. I like to help out where I can. Sometimes slipping a Jackson into the red pail does it for me. Sometimes it's shopping for somebody I know will really appreciate an unexpected Christmas surprise. I like to take time during shopping to stop and watch the mall Santa's and those small faces that are so full of wonder as they meet their hero. Christmas carols make my heart sing (and my mouth ).

You stay warm, too, Julie - your post warmed my heart. Did I hear mention of the Beacon????????? (I already have hotel reservations ... just need my show! )

Ruthie, I hear you and can imagine how difficult since Judy has passed. Hugs to you!

Deb, as usual you have the most perfect things to say... always!! We love you for that!!

Hey, I have an idea... why don't we get a sleigh and pick up all the Angels then head to Deb's house for the party!!!

A couple of things that work for me. The first is listening to Christmas music. I've always enjoyed Christmas music from traditional to contemporary. O Holy Night and The First Noel (Elvis sings a great version) always bring me chills and even a tear or two. I've listened to Frank Sinatra's Xmas CD a couple of times this week at the office and his version of Jingle Bells always gets my foot tapping. Probably my favorite is Nat King Cole's The Christmas Song. It always makes me think of the ones I love past and present. (This would be a great song for Gregg to sing!)

Another thing that gets me hyped up is walking my dog around the neighborhood at night and looking at everyone's yard and house decorations. Putting the Xmas lights up was always a special time when I was a kid and seeing homes decorated makes me think of kids and/or adults being kids and enjoying themselves.

As some of the other crew mentioned, making toy donations really does it. It's my way of celebrating and sharing the good fortunes my family has and bringing some fun and happiness to someone I don't know.

Hope these help. Merry Christmas Everyone!

Perhaps at the holiday party tomorrow we hold for the kids some of that Christmas spirit will awaken. Every year we hold a party for the people who attend my husbands neighborhood meetings. We like to give gifts to all the kids but the city especially in this tough time gives us little to spend. We usually have to hit the dollar store to make sure everyone gets a little something. So we go last night and what are the major toys they have???? Fake gangsta "grills". bling and pimp hats. We did manage to avoid those and get some little things. Brush sets for the girls, dream catchers, chess sets, yo-yo's. I'm making goody bags so each child will have some candy. Thank you all for the suggestions and good wishes. The spirit of Christmas is at this sight. Always love and good wishes here.

Come on over, don't mind the mess, put your feet up, I'll start a fire, and we'll throw on some tunes to enjoy with our cocktails!

AAARRGGGHHHH! Julie - I know what you mean about some of the crapola that gets pushed off on kids by the retail world! Sounds like you found some good and lovely stuff regardless. Thank you for the smiles your family will be creating on so many faces and in so many hearts.

The holidays can be a mixed bag at times..Happy and sad. Memories are the most precious gifts we can give someone and it is so nice to see it here. I guess getting older makes me feel the need to create good memories for my family and friends, not so much the monetary value of a gift. I hope you are all blessed with giving and receiving such memories this season...Nanci

We had close to 600 kids to visit Santa yesterday evening. I had to run like a mad person for more toys. We managed to have just enough for everyone. They just kept coming. For awhile the line was out the door and down the block. The kids were just darling, huge smiles and lots of hugs for Santa. As we started running short of toys my daughter offered up her birthday monety to go get some more. I've never been more proud. Of course, I didn't accept. Instead I broke out a credit card and will chalk the cost up to therapy for my heart. I found a good deal of my Christmas spirit last night. Kids have a way of doing that for you.

What a story. It sure made me smile. Kids do it to you every time. As for credit cards, mom and dad always told me they're for "emergencies"! (I think that includes G&F shows too!).

Merry Christmas Chicagofan! You're awesome!
