Well, I knew the day would come. I was kind of hoping it would be a year or two from now. My oldest daughter, Laura Lee, has moved out on her own. She's 20, in her third year of college and is working 20-30 hours a week at a retail store. She is a great kid, has never been any trouble, nor has she ever been in any trouble. She has two room mates who are also fine young ladies. The house is next door to my church, is owned by the church, and they are being sponsored by the church. I am comfortable with the situation....except for the whole "my baby has moved out" part. I remember my mother telling me, "Enjoy them while they're little. They grow up fast." Damned if she wasn't right...again. How about some good vibes for Laura as she embarks on her first excursion into self reliance?

Also, one of my favorite club brothers, Donnie, has a son, Brian, who is about to be deployed to Iraq. Brian was shipped from a base in Alaska to Ft. Benning, GA for his last bit of training and weapons qualifications. Donnie left this morning, on his motorcycle, to ride across state to Columbus, to spend the evening with Brian. Donnie is very proud of Brian for volunteering, but has obvious concerns about his son going to war. So, if you guys would, please pray for Brian's safety while he is deployed to Iraq and pray for Donnie's peace and comfort while his son is gone.

Much obliged!

Here's to Laura Lee as she takes these first few steps into adulthood. May she enjoy her 20's and have many new and exciting experiences. May this be a stepping stone to a long wonderful life. And may she remain safe, happy, and fulfilled throughout.

Prayers for safety being sent to blanket Brian as he ships out and in the days and weeks that are to follow. Prayers of comfort being sent to blanket Donnie who will remain here and worry - may he never receive bad news and find comfort in the family and friends he surrounds himself with. I sympathize with anybody who has loved ones going into war - these are scary times.

Prayers sent for Brian's safety and Donnie's peace of mind. Laura Lee living next door to your church? Sounds like you've already had one prayer answered! Can't raise too much" H-E-double-hockey sticks" living next to a church! Laura Lee sounds like a great kid! You and your wife did a great job as parents!

Prayers sent for Brian's safety while in Iraq. I've been dealing with the empty nest thing myself since August. Sean is 18, and attending Wright State University. He is not just my son, he is one of my best friends. He is my jamming partner here at home, and has been to many shows with me. I have equal love for my 15 yr. old son who still lives with me, but we don't share the same interests as much as Sean, and I do. He made a big move leaving here, moving in with his girlfriend to attend the same school together. So far, so good. I'm just not ready to be a Grandpa yet.

Dave, I remember the feelings when my daghter went out on her own and the concern ,joy, worry that went with it. If Laura Lee has been schooled properly(and I suspect she has) she has all the qaulities she will need to make smart decisions.

Prayers for Brian's saftey.

Well Dave, if it makes you feel any better, I essentially moved out of my parents house when I went to college at 18. And then I moved back in when I was 24. So maybe Laura will be back And in the meantime, I'm sure she'll be fine.

Thanks y'all.

I've been teasing her...saying, "I give it 6 to 8 weeks and you'll be back home."

She called me at 1:30AM this morning and woke me out of a dead sleep, saying, "Dad, I think the furnace went out. I think the pilot light may have gone out and I think I can smell gas." I told her, "Make sure the thermostat is turned off and y'all come over to our house and sleep tonight." She stayed and toughed it out. Haven't heard yet if they got the furnace back on yet, or what was wrong with it.

BlueEyedGirl....I did tell Laura, when she and I were moving her bed, "I'm only moving you one time."

Best of luck to Laura, and prayers for Brian.

I love reading or hearing parents talk about the things that happen as their kids get older...my daughter is 5 and I can't even fathom any of the things to come.

Perfect timing with this thread- here is a talented and adorable young lady playing ukelele and singing a song about this very subject, her generation growing up and turning into adults. She's actually very good. A fun song with cool lyrics;

Best wishes to Laura Lee as she embarks on the next one of life's journeys. I'm sure she will be fine, and she already knows you are there for her if she needs your help. Sounds like you and Mrs. BDOB have done a great job.

Hope Brian will be safe.

Mitch

Blessings and good wishes to all.

On another point how did you get them out? I've got 2 daughters, 25 and 21, that show no signs of leaving.

Michael, when I was 18, I moved into my dad's house after my mom moved south. My dad made me pay room and board, $20 a week. I had a job, so the money wasn't a problem. It was mainly to help with extra utility expenses and groceries. I stayed with Dad about six months and then moved out on my own. Maybe if you told them they need to start paying room and board, they'll either pony up or move out and do it for themselves.

In my daughter's case, the opportunity to move into this home with these room mates of hers just kind of presented itself. The house is in a good neighborhood, she's very familiar with her room mates, it's next door to our church. It was hard to object to. Besides, she is 20, will turn 21 in May. She's pretty mature. I had a discussion with her a while back about moving out and tried to convince her that while she was still in college, take advantage of the free room and board at mom and dad's place. She's determined to be on her own, so I have to stand back and let her take off. I'll help her out, within reason, but if she wants to be self reliant, she's going to have to learn how to take the bull by the horns and solve her own problems.
