For years, (in my opinion) the local press has overlooked the fact that Derek lived in Jax and that he achieved national status. Well this weeks Folio has a cover story well worth reading...this is a large pdf :

It's like Pedro said in an article posted here about that part of Florida. There just aren't many places where people appreciate original material. People just wanna hear Buffet tunes.

Unfortunately, Augusta (where I live) doesn't appreciate talent either.

so my dad is in jacksonville for a business trip with my mom. he's at the jax airport and he calls me.

Chris - I think i see Derek Trucks over in the airport at our gate. I said that DT was from Jacksonville and that he was off to the UK to start the Clapton tour, so it probably was him.

My dad and mom had a great conversation with Derek. They took the same flight and chatted on the plane as well.

Figures - a guy from Jersey recognizes Derek while the enter Jax airport had no clue.

Once while at a gas station, filling up one of our rentals for work, I noticed Derek's bus parked at the truckstop. If it hadn't been so dang early in the morning, I would have tried to say hello!

Seems crazy to me too, being a fan, I would recognize him a long way off...but as he states in the article, it is sort of nice to fly under the radar. Could be one of the reasons he made his home here.

A few years back, I saw him strolling across the street in the 5 Points area...if you think about it, it must be nice for him to do what he wants.

i have often wondered in sheer amazement how/why people just don't get it.... Susan, Derek, Warren & the Mule... I've been hooked on all since my first taste!

I can understand Derek being cool with flying under the radar...but the secret is slipping out as time goes by! think about how many people have recently goe to see legends like Clapton & Santana, just to see Derek!

Yes, but a lot of musicians live pretty quiet and private lives. It's not as if he's reached world known status yet. I still know a ton of people who look at me like I just put on an foreign language learning CD when I play DTB.

I ran in to Derek in the Atlanta airport in 2006 THE DAY of the ABB show. I went up and talked to him until I got tongu-tied and didn't know what else to talk about! He told me he was waiting for his family to drive them to the hotel. At the show that night Susan sang the Weight with the Boys. It added a nice personal dimension to the show for me.

The first time I ever saw or heard Derek was at a biker bar in Columbus, Ohio in 99 called Ludlow's. He opened for the Mule and was well-received of course. While the Mule came on he came and stood right next to me in the crowd to watch. no one bothered him. He has always been very unassuming. That's what I like about him.

Great read. It sums up why I like Derek as a human being as much as a musician. I'm sure happy Chris Trucks had his head screwed on right when young Derek was entering the scene and his natural talent was obvious. His life could've taken a much different path had he not had a solid foundation at home.

True, it sounds like Derek has had a very solid upbringing!

Living, mostly. And writing - Tyler and I wrote a book about our experiences over the last few years.
