Well, today is 10 years to the day that I was lucky enough to see my first Allman Brothers Concert along with my then girlfriend, now wife. In that time, we have seen almost 30 shows, and they were all great.

Last night at PNC, however, we've realized that the "spark", for lack of a better word, is just not there for us without Dickey Betts, and will no longer be going to ABB shows.

No hard feelings, not angry because he's not in the band, just a simple fact of life for our tastes in music. For the time being, we will be going back to our roots, which began with the Dead, and as they are back together and cooking real hot with Jimmy at the helm, we will be focusing on seeing as many of their shows as possible.

The Allmans will always hold a special place our hearts, but the time has come for us to make our exit.

I'll try to stop by every once in a while to say hi!

A special thank you to Sue for all the time you gave to pm's with our daughter, and to the rest of you - you know who you are - who have shared fun and debate with me, and generally tolerated me when you probably shouldn't have.

God Bless all of you!

PeacHe, and so long for now

Say it ain't so, JoJo. I respect your feelings about the shows but please still come around here. You are one of the great characters around here and you would be missed. We have agreed and agreed to disagree many times and always with respect and good natured fun. I for one would love you to hang around.

I wonder if its the End of the Line for me too? Have I grown Old Before My Time? I saw the band Tuesday at the Festival Pier in Philly. They were awesome of course (particularly Desdedoma and 44 Blues.) I have the opposite opinion of JoJo that the band sounds better than ever without Dickey, however the last 3 years of shows have always been disappointing as far as the crowds go.
Two years ago in Camden was some young kid wandering around offering vodka from a bottle he smuggled in as Gregg was singing "High Cost of Low Living". Last year at PNC Arts Center it was hot and dusty. I was surrounded by a bunch of college age boys smoking acrid cigarrettes, talking through all the songs, and booing when they played something new (Like Old B4 my TIme, or even Gambler's Roll). THe tough audience came to life as the band chugged through a mindless version of Midnight Rider, however
Then of course its open standing at the pier, general admission. Hot and Humid the cigarrette smoke had nowhere to go. ( I know its a concert what should I expect). Some older guy behind me was heckling Susan Tedesci singing her heart out during Don't THink Twice. Two guys in front of me were giving me odd looks as I sang the lyrics to all the songs off the new album. THen some frat boys were talking during Black Hearted Women. One was yelling into his cell phone "I can't hear you I'm at a concert". Like Duh, I shouldn't have heard him more than Gregg. I snapped and yelled at these kids to shut up, if they wanted to talk go to the pavillion. My friend yanked me out, we got some food and a beer and mellowed way at the back where it was much cooler.
I saw my first show 10 years ago, I was 19 years ago and Dickey was in jail. 25 concerts later, I still come for the music, but all the fair weather has beens have got me on the firing line. I can trade shows and listen in my car or apartment and enjoy it more. Its' not the end for the Allmans and me, but live shows probably.

Jojo, I know how you feel. Not that I would have dug being around Dickey when he was whacked at the end, but his shows now are cool. The whole thing could have been the best thing to happen to Dickey. And, Dangerous Dan Toler is better than ever right now.
As for ABB, Marc, Jaimoe, and Oteil are inspirations and always will be. As for now, I am waiting for Warren and Derek to get back to other projects. That is when you will see me out there. Those two rock.

For 10 yrs straight I went to see the Allmans in Charlotte and Raleigh. Last year was the first year I didn't see them. I'm going to the Raleigh show Sunday. If I don't like it, it will be the last I see too...

2 yrs ago I saw them w/ Phil. PLQ blew them out of the water. A year before that, 2000, we left before the first set. A year before that I saw ABB w/ Dickey in Asheville... wasn't the best either. But I'm giving them another chance because Hittin The Note is such a good album.

From what I've been hearing, I won't be disappointed.

ALoveSupreme,

You're 29 and worried that you're "old before your time"? Man, I got stuff in my refrigerator older than you! Chill out and relax and enjoy the music! I'm only 46, but I go to every ABB, Derek, Mule or Oteil gig (and many others) that I have a chance to. You are so fortunate to live in a time where all of this great, great music exists! As for those idiots with the cel-phones, and the ones who just won't shut up, I say that we either duct-tape their mouths shut or just give them Matchbox 20 tickets and send them on their way. Most of the young'uns that I meet at shows are really into the music.

[EDIT} I assumed you were 29. I mis-read one of the sentences. I still don't get it.

JoJoDancer,
Best of luck to you. Hope you find some new tunes and a scene that better suits you. We'll miss you. But, hey! More room in the mosh pit for me!

I will stop short of calling you both a couple of whiners. But either get out there and do it, or go find yourselves a couple of rocking chairs.

Peace ... really.
RB

Sorry to see JoJo go.
That being said:

This band has never sounded better.

Dickey or not, they are getting it done onstage.

I can sympathize with the negative concert experience though. I can handle smoke, but the drunks who keep spilling beer on me & the kids, not priceless.

After Darien, Ken (13) told me he thought the people in front of us were smoking marijuana. I told him every show he's been to has had that action. (Just breath deep, son. Enjoy a freebie.)
Just kidding y'all. I'll breath deep, he shouldn't. But my Father (65) said maybe that's why my kids enjoy the shows so much.
I've told them, people will smoke, and drink, and some will be rude or act like fools. Just listen to the band, and ignore the other stuff.

Ron, I can't stand drunks that can AFFORD to spill those $8.00 beers....
I'm looking for the kid passing around the VODKA...................KAZIUP

Sounds like there are a few here that need to start keeping an eye on the Norah Jones website or maybe American idol...a little less stress there and not so much smoke. JK

Try moving down here to Houston where you don't even have the opportunity to see the band but every 2 or 3 years without getting on an airplane.

I like to drink but some of the fans do get out of control ,most of them are the ones screaming for a Blue Sky or Ramblin Man.But I think thats at all concerts sometimes your next to a good group sometimes not.As for the ABB not hittin the note man I just don`t see it ,Hear it or feel it These cats are doing some of the best shows I have seen for a long time .Everyone has there likes and dislikes but I don`t think theirs anybody out there right now that can touch ABB.And again ,thats just my opinion

I hate to do it, but I'm going to have to call JoJo out on this. Less than six months ago, he posted a topic in this very Forum entitled "Opening Night at the Beacon--A Perfect 10!"

I wasn't at the PNC show, which may well have been an off night for all I know. However, it does seem like our friend here has a pretty short memory. Regardless, JoJo is a righteous brother and I wish him nothing but the best.

I don't want to make any assumptions, but this sounds like someone needs attention.. I could be wrong and I don't mean to offend JoJo, but this farewell post is somewhat of a "slap in the face" to the band. Being a fan for so long then just calling it quits? I don't know...

Although I guess I'm a relative newcomer(a little over a year) to this site, I've read a lot of JoJo's posts and just want to wish him all the best.....although I do totally disagree with his take on the band. On the contrary, I think there's a TON of magic in the current line-up and I'm a person who will actually end up seeing more Great Southern than ABB shows this Summer. Anyhow, not looking to beat the ''Dickey vs. non-Dickey'' horse any more, just weighing in to wish JoJo a good one; anyone who takes their screen name from a Richard Pryor movie is OK in my book.

I have no idea what JoJo is talking about. I thought the PNC show was excellent. There were some morons at the show, but face it folks, they are everywhere. I drank a liitle at the show, well ok,ALOT. (right Jer? ) But I was far from obnoxious or rude, as some others I saw in the lawn section were. Mostly young'uns. If you cant handle it, dont drink, I say.

Not passing judgment on anyone. I wish JoJo all the best, but you're loosing out. I love Dickey, butthat doesn't stop me from enjoying the present ABB lineup. PNC wasn't the best show I've seen, but it was damn good! Why not enjoy both bands? They're both tearing it up out there. I've seen DB&GS 4 times this summer and ABB 3 times and I'd go see both again if I had the chance.
If any of you haven't seen Dickey Betts, GO!!!! You won't be sorry.

Chuck drank about 4 kegs worth, and yet he still managed to act responsible and respectful. Another thing that pissed me off a bit was that a lot of fans; in the seating area, made a mad dash to the parking lots and did so in a somewhat rude and disorderly fashion. Other than that, the people were great, the tunes were awesome and it was a good time

I am in shock. I was at the PNC show and thought it was amazing. The energy was great, everybody sounded perfect, and the energy on stage was beautiful. Yes I miss seeing DIckey up there, but come on give me a break. I've seen some pretty tough shows and in no way shape or form was this one of them. I'm not quite sure how someone can say that the energy was not there.
