Back in the days of vinyl LPs, one would be able to spot a really long song rather quickly by noticing that it's the only track on the side of the record. Some people are horrified when they see only one track on the side, but once you start listening to it, you realize that it's the best thing about the particular album!!! Of course "Whipping Post" and "You Don't Love Me" are the most obvious examples. "Mountain Jam" took up two sides of the two record set. As we all know, the jams are simply stunning, and the best thing about the records.

Some other long ones include DARK STAR (Live Dead); IN A GADDA DA VIDA (Iron Butterfly). What are some other great long songs that were alone on the side of the record?

If my memory serves me well (It doesn't always) Dylan had to fight to get Like A Rolling Stone released because it violated the 3 minute song mark that was cannon at the time.

Hey Jude was one of the 1st long ones

none of these match up to Whipping Post, YDLM, MJ, or DS, but are good in their own right

Mountain did a 1 or 2 side version of Nantuckett Sleighride
Johnny Winter - Highway 61 revisited
Yes - Close to the Edge
ELP - Karn Evil 9

also by Yes, Tales From Topographic Oceans was a two disc, four song album with one song per side. The shortest was 18 minutes or so and the longest was 21 minutes. The grooves were so narrow to fit that all on one side that my needle always skipped...

*****Wow, we all had the same thought at the same time******

Rush had three of them, The Fountain of Lamneth (Caress of Steel), 2112 and Hemispheres. I've always enjoyed all three of them.

some great 'long songs"

Quicksilver Messenger Service > Who Do You Love Suite
Cream > Spoonful

but then there are the part 1 & part 2 songs and these stand alone:

Cold Sweat = The Godfather
What'd I Say = Ray

these two songs broke many barriers and set the stage for so much they must be mentioned.......

Cold Sweat > So What.

'nuff said.

I like The Gates of Delirium off of the Yes album, Relayer. I especially like that instrumental part in the middle of the song.

Highlands---Bob Dylan

Well my heart's in the Highlands gentle and fair
Honeysuckle blooming in the wildwood air
Bluebelles blazing, where the Aberdeen waters flow
Well my heart's in the Highland,
I'm gonna go there when I feel good enough to go

Windows were shakin' all night in my dreams
Everything was exactly the way that it seems
Woke up this morning and I looked at the same old page
Same ol' rat race
Life in the same ol' cage.

I don't want nothing from anyone, ain't that much to take
Wouldn't know the difference between a real blonde and a fake
Feel like a prisoner in a world of mystery
I wish someone would come
And push back the clock for me

Well my heart's in the Highlands wherever I roam
That's where I'll be when I get called home
The wind, it whispers to the buckeyed trees in rhyme
Well my heart's in the Highland,
I can only get there one step at a time.

I'm listening to Neil Young, I gotta turn up the sound
Someone's always yelling turn it down
Feel like I'm drifting
Drifting from scene the scene
I'm wondering what in the devil could it all possibly mean?

Insanity is smashing up against my soul
You can say I was on anything but a roll
If I had a conscience, well I just might blow my top
What would I do with it anyway
Maybe take it to the pawn shop

My heart's in the Highlands at the break of dawn
By the beautiful lake of the Black Swan
Big white clouds, like chariots that swing down low
Well my heart's in the Highlands
Only place left to go

I'm in Boston town, in some restaurant
I got no idea what I want
Well, maybe I do but I'm just really not sure
Waitress comes over
Nobody in the place but me and her

It must be a holiday, there's nobody around
She studies me closely as I sit down
She got a pretty face and long white shiny legs
She says, "What'll it be?"
I say, "I don't know, you got any soft boiled eggs?"

She looks at me, Says "I'd bring you some
but we're out of 'm, you picked the wrong time to come"
Then she says, "I know you're an artist, draw a picture of me!"
I say, "I would if I could, but,
I don't do sketches from memory."

"Well", she says, "I'm right here in front of you, or haven't you looked?"
I say," all right, I know, but I don't have my drawing book!"
She gives me a napkin, she says, "you can do it on that"
I say, "yes I could but,
I don't know where my pencil is at!"

She pulls one out from behind her ear
She says "all right now, go ahead, draw me, I'm standing right here"
I make a few lines, and I show it for her to see
Well she takes a napkin and throws it back
And says "that don't look a thing like me!"

I said, "Oh, kind miss, it most certainly does"
She says, "you must be jokin.'" I say, "I wish I was!"
Then she says, "you don't read women authors, do you?"
Least that's what I think I hear her say,
"Well", I say, "how would you know and what would it matter anyway?"

"Well", she says, "you just don't seem like you do!"
I said, "you're way wrong."
She says, "which ones have you read then?" I say, "I read Erica Jong!"
She goes away for a minute and I slide up out of my chair
I step outside back to the busy street, but nobody's going anywhere

Well my heart's in the Highlands, with the horses and hounds
Way up in the border country, far from the towns
With the twang of the arrow and a snap of the bow
My heart's in the Highlands
Can't see any other way to go

Every day is the same thing out the door
Feel further away then ever before
Some things in life, it gets too late to learn
Well, I'm lost somewhere
I must have made a few bad turns

I see people in the park forgetting their troubles and woes
They're drinking and dancing, wearing bright colored clothes
All the young men with their young women looking so good
Well, I'd trade places with any of them
In a minute, if I could

I'm crossing the street to get away from a mangy dog
Talking to myself in a monologue
I think what I need might be a full length leather coat
Somebody just asked me
If I registered to vote

The sun is beginning to shine on me
But it's not like the sun that used to be
The party's over, and there's less and less to say
I got new eyes
Everything looks far away

Well, my heart's in the Highlands at the break of day
Over the hills and far away
There's a way to get there, and I'll figure it out somehow
But I'm already there in my mind
And that's good enough for now

Lyrics for: American Pie
From the album: The Best Of Don McLean

A long, long time ago, I can still remember
How that music used to make me smile
And I knew if I had my chance
That I could make those people dance
And maybe they'd be happy for a while
But February made me shiver, with every paper I'd deliver
Bad news on the doorstep, I couldn't take one more step
I can't remember if I cried, when I read about his widowed bride
But something touched me deep inside the day the music died

So bye, bye Miss American Pie
Drove my Chevy to the levee but the levee was dry
And them good old boys were drinking whiskey and rye
Singing this'll be the day that I die
This'll be the day that I die

Did you write the book of love
And do you have faith in God above
If the Bible tells you so?
Now do you believe in rock and roll?
Can music save your mortal soul?
And can you teach me how to dance real slow?

Well, I know that you're in love with him
'Cause I saw you dancing in the gym
You both kicked off your shoes
Man, I dig those rhythm and blues

I was a lonely teenage broncin' buck
With a pink carnation and a pickup truck
But I knew I was out of luck
The day the music died

I started singing bye, bye Miss American Pie
Drove my Chevy to the levee but the levee was dry
Them good old boys were drinking whiskey and rye
And singing this'll be the day that I die
This'll be the day that I die

Now, for ten years we've been on our own
And moss grows fat on a rolling stone
But that's not how it used to be
When the jester sang for the king and queen
In a coat he borrowed from James Dean
And a voice that came from you and me

Oh, and while the king was looking down
The jester stole his thorny crown
The courtroom was adjourned
No verdict was returned

And while Lenin read a book on Marx
The quartet practiced in the park
And we sang 'Dirges In The Dark'
The day the music died

We were singing bye, bye Miss American Pie
Drove my Chevy to the levee but the levee was dry
Them good old boys were drinking whiskey and rye
And singing this'll be the day that I die
This'll be the day that I die

Helter skelter in a summer swelter
The birds flew off with a fallout shelter
Eight miles high and falling fast
Landed foul on the grass
The players tried for a forward pass
With the jester on the sidelines in a cast

Now the half time air was sweet perfume
While sergeants played a marching tune
We all got up to dance
Oh, but we never got the chance

'Cause the players tried to take the field
The marching band refused to yield
Do you recall what was revealed
The day the music died?

We started singing bye, bye Miss American Pie
Drove my Chevy to the levee but the levee was dry
Them good old boys were drinking whiskey and rye
And singing this'll be the day that I die
This'll be the day that I die

Oh, and there we were all in one place
A generation lost in space
With no time left to start again
So come on Jack be nimble, Jack be quick
Jack Flash sat on a candlestick
'Cause fire is the devil's only friend

Oh, and as I watched him on the stage
My hands were clenched in fists of rage
No angel born in ****
Could break that Satan's spell

And as the flames climbed high into the night
To light the sacrificial rite
I saw Satan laughing with delight
The day the music died

He was singing bye, bye Miss American Pie
Drove my Chevy to the levee but the levee was dry
Them good old boys were drinking whiskey and rye
And singing this'll be the day that I die
This'll be the day that I die

I met a girl who sang the blues
And I asked her for some happy news
But she just smiled and turned away
I went down to the sacred store
Where I'd heard the music years before
But the man there said the music wouldn't play

And in the streets the children screamed
The lovers cried and the poets dreamed
But not a word was spoken
The church bells all were broken

And the three men I admire most
The Father, Son and the Holy Ghost
They caught the last train for the coast
The day the music died

And they were singing bye, bye Miss American Pie
Drove my Chevy to the levee but the levee was dry
Them good old boys were drinking whiskey and rye
Singing this'll be the day that I die
This'll be the day that I die

They were singing, bye, bye Miss American Pie
Drove my Chevy to the levee but the levee was dry
Them good old boys were drinking whiskey and rye
Singing this'll be the day that I die

Shine On You Crazy Diamond

Also by Yes, "Awaken," almost a side.

And another Floyd tune, although probably only really known within the trading community because it's never had a proper release: The Embryo.

Starless by King Crimson (12:18), King Kong by Frank Zappa (YCDTOSA vol. 3 version is 24:32), Metal Machine Music by Lou Reed (very long), Zimbabwe by Miles Davis (I believe it's 40 minutes long), Afro-Blue (Gov't Mule version, 29:30), Sister Ray by the Velvet Underground (17:27), Alice's Restaurant by Arlo Guthrie (18:30), Dixie Chicken by Little Feat (version on waiting for Columbus is over 9 minutes), Love and Only Love by Neil Young (10:18), Liberation by Chicago (CTA album 14:39), Do What You Like by Blind Faith (15:18) I don't know if any of these took one side of an album (some came out after the days of Vinyl) but they sure are long.

And Atom Heart Mother (not as good but long). or Saucerful of Secrets, and Pink floyd's Animals, I don't know how it broke down on the album but the 3 main songs (Dogs, Pigs, and Sheep) are all prett long. And of course Dark Side of Moon, if you ask me is 1 really long song. Lots of Pink Floyd Live stuff would count like Embryo, Fat Old Sun, Intersteller Overdrive, Shine on You crazy diamond (complete it could be about 35 minutes), Cymbaline and the above mentioned stuff.

The Grateful Deads "the Other One"

Miles Davis' "In a silent Way" album is only 2 songs

A real fine long song is "The low spark of high - heeled boys" from TRAFFIC with the Muscle Shoals rhythm section on both studio & live versions.
Others are COLOSSEUM - "Lost Angeles" from "Colosseum - Live" or HUMBLE PIE - "I walk on
guilded splinters" from "Rockin`the Fillmore".
Or Jethro Tull - "Thick as a brick" was both sides of the LP.
