Hey Now,

Now that we have sent out a lot of the West's Best packages and all the 2008 shows are in stock, I thought it would be a good time to revisit this question.

Myself, I'm torn. The 9/30/08 Merriweather show is incredible, and on a pure performance level, it might take the prize. So many great jams from that show! On the other hand, the 10/4 Charlotte show is fantastic and has a very exotic setlist, with no instrumentals and no drum solo and several unusual tunes. I could listen to those versions of "Come On In My Kitchen" and "Manic Depression" all day long!

Both Atlanta shows have their moments, but I'm not sure either of them can match up to those two on a song for song, note for note basis. Likewise, the "Rocking Horse" from Raleigh is probably my favorite jam of the whole year, the but the Raleigh show in its entirety just can't get to Merriweather and Charlotte.

What do you think?

I'll go with the Atlanta SHOWS. For those of us that traveled, it was a remarkable weekend. Evenings with, and only 1 song repeated. That should be sold as a package. The gathering at Chastain Saturday before the show set the mood for a great evening of music.

Hey Rob

Merriweather Post was the only show I made it to this summer and It was very special show. One of the better
shows I have seen in any year. The Phil set that opened was very special also, so it was one of the best
shows of the summer for me. And Merriweather is my all time favorite outdoor venue, been going to
shows there for other 30 years. No one will be surprised when I say Merriweather was the best.
(someone reported the band felt it was particularly strong)

but of the tapes and IL I have listened to there were some other very good shows. Red Rocks was a killer
show and I really liked the Friday Night Atlanta Show also.

Interested in what other folks have to say.

ABB - ATL Saturday show...

Closest I have ever been to the band and I heard what a lot of music coming off the stage and not through the PA, and I liked it...A LOT

Hey, what a coincidence! Heh. I preferred the Fri show, but we're talking steak versus lobster here.

They were both incredible. Enjoyed some great company too.

Only saw one show this year at Bethel Woods. Can't say it was the best or worse but do know although I enjoyed it I have seen better by the Brothers.

Nice comparison Brock. We loved both shows in Atlanta, but I agree Friday was a better show for us too. The space station sighting was awesome. The vibe at Atlanta was so strong. It was fun seeing everyone, the cookout and auction. The aftershow parties were such an experience. The jam in BD's, Bluedads, and Drews room just doesn't happen every show. There was so much togetherness among us all.

Charlotte on the other hand was much different. Atlanta was "evening with", the Brothers were "opening" in Charlotte. They busted in to their set and never looked back. Gregg played and sang the best I have heard him in years. Gregg kicked @$$ on the keyboards. The fiddle by Larry Campbell was pretty special on Into my Kitchen and Manic Depression threw me a curve.
Plus Paul Riddle from MTB, Jackie Greene and John Molo appeared. Charlotte was much more intense, no long gaps between songs.

I wonder what songs/versions were the best on the tour this past year. Put all those together on a playlist, it would be pretty good.

I was at DTE and the show was excellent. But, I dont think that it came close to Red Rocks/Atlanta/chosen by Rob.......BUT, the Preachin Blues encore was one of a kind=feeling.

Has anyone heard the Boyne Mt show from last year? Yes, its not popular....but was anyone there? My only first row experience, and it was ridiculous. I dont think anyone has heard this show, and I think it was better than both shows this year.

Of the five I got to see live this year, I'd rank them:

1.) Orange Beach AL. Great intensity from the get go, thru the entire set
2.) Chastain night 2. Probably a tie for 1st, since it was an Evening With, but I'll call OB just a bit better
3.) Red Rocks - great solid set
4.) Chastain night one - some rough spots, some great
5.) Birmingham - still a solid show

got to see a couple of shows in '08, and the one that sticks out most to me is...

the 10/13 show in State College,PA (ABB/Dead)
maybe it was just the nostalgia of it all, but what a great time.

This is a perfect thread for me. There's enough left in the Christmas budget for Mrs. Bhawk to get me one $25 gift...a 2008 show would be dandy...

Only got to two shows in 2008! We made Charlotte and Chastain for the Saturday night show. Of the shows I have heard Il's or aud recordings, I'm partial to the two I experienced live. I'll have to give the 8/30 show a spin over the holiday WE. Of the two I'd say the Chastain show was my favorite just because of the setting, & it was an Evening-with show, whereas in Charlotte they opened and were off stage before 8:30. I am definitely dropping hints for the Orange Beach show for a christmas fix! Hope to hear 'em all before they kick-off 2009 at the Beacon!

Wasn't able to attend many shows this year but if there was one that topped the second night in Atlanta I want that one too.

I'm partial to the Camden show, not only because i was there,
but the 'Done Somebody Wrong' eff up at the beginning still
cracks me up (Derek went into Statesboro)

I listen to the Charlotte and Red Rocks the most though.
But the Atlanta shows are nice.

Still hate the drum break in the middle of 'Jessica' though ...

Outside of the Atlanta shows, DTE was the other show I attended. I'm not knocking Ratdog, but they bored me for 2 hours leading up to ABB. Gregg's voice was just not together there. It was in the first few days of the tour though, and I have given it quite a few listens. The "Preachin Blues" encore blew me away. That was the highlight of the show to me.

I saw B'Ham, and both Atlanta shows... Friday Atlanta was the best to my ears

But the Orange Beach show is the best I've heard from this year
