I LOVE IT !! With the Temps plunging here on the East Coast the last few days , I checked the web page of The Home of Mountain Jam , Hunter Mountain and was happy to see the caption "People Can you Feel It" on the home page with pictures of snow guns blasting away and the good news that the season for Hunter begins on Saturday ! http://www.huntermtn.com/huntermtn/ Needless to say "Revival" is now stuck in my head for the rest of today ( Not that there's anything wrong with that ! ) Any other skiers out there getting ready for to make some turns ? And where might that be ? Saturday can't get here fast enough now as far as I'm concerned !!!!!

Anyone been to Boyne Mountain?? Northern Michigans finest. Ive been skiing there since I was 3 yrs old, so 24 years now.....AND last year the ABB just happen to play there. That was absolutely the coolest coincidence Ive ever been a part of.

Anyway, if anyone wants a deal, Boyne Mt has 6 TICKETS FOR PRICE OF 1 on Dec 19th only, its a sweet deal considering they usually are like $40 a piece.

Only last year on Dec. 19th, on my very last run of the day, Mt was closed, 4:30pm, I wiped out bad and tore my ACL completely and meniscus ligament. Had surgury and now Im back in the game, a year TO THE DAY.

Killington in VT opens this weekend- they have two lifts running; Mt Snow made enough for their staff to check out their new terrain park. My big question is where am I coming up with the $$$ to go? Usually I get a season pass to Butternut Basin ( a little place in the Berkshires about an hour away ) but I'm not sure I can come up with it right now- at least the price of gas has dropped some so I can afford the drive!

Can I feel it? Man I've been going crazy -- always do this time of year when there's nothing to do outdoors -- is freezing cold up here in Vt., a few places will be open by the end of the week. Good post Ken, & Magodee, are you familiar w/Mt. Bohemia, on the Keewenah Peninsula in Mich.? Boy there is one place I would love to check out (among many) -- Porcupine Mtn. looks cool too w/their snowcat skiing -- winter photos were recently posted of this area, I think in a WP thread

Yes skiing rocks my world -- the best way ever invented to enjoy the great outdoors

I'm still pinching myself that Mountain Jam has become an annual event at Hunter Mountain. Rumors were rampant last year the the ABB were to be the Sunday night headliner. I'm sure rumor central will be the same this year. It would be a beautiful setting for the Brothers to play during the 40th anniversery tour !

I feel your pain. I had 2 seperate seasons end early for injuries ( Torn Bicep tendon for one , a Dislocated shoulder for the other , but both were early March so I had the bulk of the season behind me at least ) and the wait for the next season to get here is excruciating !!! Hope you enjoy those smiles on your first day back !

I'm up for that. dTb has done a run of ski areas in Colorado in the Feb-March time frame in the past. Steamboat has a pretty good SkiJam every year. Quite a few good bands do a Colorado winter tour.

Summit County areas (Breckenridge, Keystone, Copper Mtn) are a good bet - couple of really good music venues and not all the pretense and expense of Vail & Aspen. Good deals to be had with the poor economy if you avoid Christmas and President's weekend.
Loveland and A BAsin have been open since mid-October, but it has been really warm except for a couple of Mtn storms. Snow coming on Thursday.

Hey all the Michigan skiers - I grew up there (and still return every summer) - save your $ and coming skiing in Colorado or Utah - whole different program and much kinder snow.

Cheers.

If this idea gains any traction I would suggest one East Coast weekend & one for the West Coast.

If it ever took hold on the east coast, Jay Peak, in northern Vt. would be the place for the best sampling of eastern type skiing -- it's the best -- Sugarloaf is the best one in Maine & Cannon in NH, but Jay is flat out the bomb

I dunno though, maybe a midwestern type of in between point might be a good thing -- not that I could make it, unless I hit the lottery --
-- Magodee, saw that part about your knee later on, glad the surgery/recovery went well -- how far is Boyne from the Purcupines? -- Boyne I THINK is owned by the same company that owns Sugarloaf -- not sure

The Mojofest '08 that Dickey played at last month at Cannon Mtn. was like that -- Dickey at just about my favorite ski area -- no going wrong w/that arrangement thanks!! (it was cold enough to go skiing too I might add). It's not the first ski area he's been to up here, the ABB played at Stowe (Vt.) in 1989 or 90 IIRC

Had the itch since we first saw snow a couple of weeks back and can't wait! Hoping to go up to a friends place in NH next weekend and check out the new and improved Ragged Mtn. Place was bankrupt 2 years ago, new owners and plenty of optimism up there. If not may head to Stratton, or if time is a factor may just hit Windham for a day. I got the feeling this is going to be a kick a$$ season on the East Coast. WoooHoooo!

Im not sure, but I dont think that Boyne owns Sugarloaf too, although they do have quite a few resorts now, Michigan to Montana.

If you hold your left hand out like the "Michigan glove", Boyne is located right about at the end of your pinkie.

For you people in Vermont, I just happen to see my first concert ever in Stowe, not sure the Mt name but it def was in Stowe. Was on a trip with my dad and two bros, ages 12, 10 and 8, me being 12. Got lost off the highway and stumbled upon "Stowe Mt". Were talking full fledged tail gating, bbq's, coolers, people everywhere.....So my dad asked what the hell is going on here, "Aerosmith show" the security guard says as he rolled his eyes. About an hour later, my dad, bros, and I were sitting on the hill waiting for Aerosmith to come out.

That was the first, "drug talk" my dad had with us. Like, "your probably going to smell pot, dont get weird, its ok, and dont accept ANYTHING from anyone" kind of thing.

Ragged is awesome -- I lived in Danbury for 14 years & watched it become what it is today -- the former owners I know quite well, & I think what happened was that they overinvested -- the "new & improved" Ragged Mountain you see today has nothing to do with the new owners, & everything to do with the previous owners. The improvements they made to that place ran the gamut. Yes they went bankrupt, but again, it was laregely to do with overinvesting & a few too many leaps of faith -- the hi-speed six pack for instance is a bit much for a place like Ragged -- but it is one fun place to ski

The great Mammoth Mountain has already opened. Only a few runs but it's a start.

I've been going to Mammoth since I was a kid and it is my favorite place on Earth. I'm hoping to make at least 4 trips this season.

Bring It On!

My friends place is on a road off of Ragged Mountain Rd. We went up there in September for the NASCAR race and had dinner up on the Mountain one night. Dinner was terrific and reasonable, and even in Sept. they were doing quite a business which was encouraging. You're right when you mention the new owners had little to do with the improvements. The way I hear it is that when they took over they put the existing management on notice and began a search for new. Once they got to know the folks up there they realized that a search for new management was unnecessary because they already had the right people there and they let them run with it. Good decision on their part.

Bring It On!

Glad to see someone posting regarding Mammoth. I lived iin L.A. from 98 - 2000 and got in about 30 days at Mammoth over those 2 ski seasons. That place ROCKS ! ( and there's plenty of those rocks to ski off & around ) Between the constant storms that always seemed to be measured in Feet instead of inches , the wide open bowls , fun inbounds chutes & steeps , plus the extensive lift system , if you can't have fun skiing at Mammoth , you either don't Ski or you're dead. Despite the massive size of the place I often found myself turning laps on just 2 chairs. Chair 22 up to Lincoln peak to ski the Avalance chutes or one of the chutes back down the lift line and Chair 23 to ski the Drop Out & Wipe Out chutes. I now always tell people here back on the East coast that living in Cali was like living in another country instead of the U.S. which gets me to relating this story. When I was living in L.A. , my job required me to work east coast hours , so getting to the mountain for early runs was always easy for me since I would wake up early in the morning due to my body clock. There was a foot of fresh on the hill and I wanted to get in some runs off of chair 23 when it opened. It was a Saturday and also a bluebird day , so the crowds were sure to be out on a day like this. I got in a couple of quick runs off of the chair but the lift line que was getting really crowded after 2 or 3 runs. I was skiing by myself and had the luxury of just jumping on the quick moving singles line. Now I am a born & bred New Yawker and sometimes that clashes with the laid back California attitude. Now the singles line is pretty long , but that's the way it is. You wait the line for your turn at the lift. So I see this guy eye balling the singles line as he's moving towards the back of the line & this guy decides he doesn't have to wait. Apparently he must be special or as I see it , he's being a huge A-hole just cutting the lift line. He jumped the line about 5 people in front of me and I yell at him ( in typical New Yawker ) "YO ! BUDDY, NO CUTTING TH LIFT LINE !! GET TO THE BACK OF THE LINE !!! " He trys to act like he doesn't hear me , so I up the volume on what is no longer a request , but a demand. ( again in typical New Yawker ) " HEY A-HOLE !! THE LINE STARTS BACK THERE !!!" this now has his attention. He then asks "What's your Problem ? " "MY PROBLEM ?!?!? IT's A CROWDED DAY AND EVERYONE WANTS BACK TO THE TOP TO SKI AND YOU'RE CUTTING THE LINE WHICH BEGINS BACK THERE !!! I SUGGEST YOU TAKE YOURSELF BACK THERE " his next reply continues to stump me to this day "Why are you being an a-hole ? " ME ?!?!? Uhhhh maybe it's because you're cutting the lift line ? By now all of the "Laid Back "Cali folks on line are probably getting their jollies watching this surreal exchange. Now I'm 6'2" and about 250 lbs , and that is quite big compared to your average size person let alone skiers and although I can bring the N.Y. attitude when needed , most of my friends will tell you that I'm just a big teddy bear in reality. But this guy was pushing all the wrong buttons on me. "DUDE !! Get behind me on this line or I'll F*ucking drag you to the back of the line myself !! " I tell him. The guy finally relents and moves out of the line going towards the rear , but as he goes by me says " You don't have to be such an **** about it " "THEN DON"T CUT THE LINE YOU FRIGGIN MORON !! " I tell him. After he slid by me I turn to see if he went to the back of the singles line and the moron cuts the line again a few people behind me cuttin in front of a good dozen or so people who don't say a word.............Strange country that California

I just recalled that the ABB tribute band The Peacheaters http://www.peacheaters.com/ seems to hit the Stowe area often and would be the kind of band an East Coast ski get together thing could be based around. What do Y'all think ?

Cool -- the previous management wasn't perfect, & there were rumors around town of some employees/contractors getting stiffed for work they did -- it was too bad. They built a golf course there, put in snowmaking, cut trails on an adjoining peak (Spear Mtn), put in that six pack etc. -- Great to hear that the new people are making a good go of it, that place deserves it

Nice pics of Mammoth! Let it snow

As I mentioned in the original post at the top of this thread , Hunter Mountain has posted on their web site that Saturday is opening day , however some of the Hunter locals are itching to ski and with the good snowmaking weather , they probably could open today ( Thursday ) or most certainly on Friday. I just saw on someone posted on a message board for Hunter regarding possibly opening on Friday - "Bumped into the Boss (Orville) having lunch at Dolph's today. When asked about a possable Friday opening he replied "Ask me Saturday."

LOL WTF???? Boyne Mt is not THAT BAD. Listen, Ive skiied from California to Vermont, and yes, it doesnt compare to anything on either coast, BUT, if you live anywhere in Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and of course Michigan, its probably the best you can get. To put things in perspective:

Favorite place to ski: Jackson Hole, WY compared to Boyne Mt.

Vertical Drop: Jackson: 4,139ft.....Boyne: 500ft

Skiable Acres: Jackson: 2,500 "In Bounds", over 3,000 "out of bounds"....Boyne: 415

Avg Snowfall: Jackson: 350-450 inches.....Boyne: 140 inches

So, maybe Im a little biased because its my "home" mt., and obviously it doesnt compare to my favs.....BUT ITS NOT A DUMP!!!!

ps- I would see an ABB concert in a dumpster if need be.
