Anyone going to see Widespread Panic tonight at Irving Plaza? A buddy called who was able to score a ticket for me, so I am in. Very pumped as I have not seen these guys in several years and have not seen Jimmy Herring in the line up either. Actually, I don't think I've been to Irving Plaza in a few years, maybe the last time was when Phil and Friends played there when Jimmy and Warren were in the line-up. Should be very cool in a small venue like that.

Did they go on pretty much on time? Also, did they do two sets or just one long one? Can't wait, having a diffcult time getting anything accomplished today because I have a half track mind about this show.

Absolutely correct. The band is super tight and Herring is on fire.

Enjoy Jim and tell us all about it after.

Just saw them two nights for Halloween in New Orleans. They were really good on Friday night and blew the roof off the place on Saturday night. The energy that was happening on that night was truly amazing.

I have seen them 3 time with Herring and I think he is a great fit with these dudes. They straight up bring the heat!!!!!

I used to say the same thing. One show with Herring changed all of that.

'nyc freaks' havin' a good time tonight!!!

long live the lingering lead!! we miss you mikey!!!!

thank you for filling in jimmy; i know he's having a blast with his old friends. it shows in the smiles on their faces as they're blowing it all away...

and one of my personal WSP fav's...

The Last Straw - from Mom's Kitchen

Straw can bury us
We can carry the hay
But straws can break
Like the reasons for my behavior

Straws mend
And straws bend
And dry ones catch like
A secret worth never paid for

Strong muscles
My, strong muscles
Plowman, come and dig my farm
It's only making my body sneeze

Straaaaaaaaaaaaawwwww

Straw can bury us
We can carry the hay
But you better jump right now
Cause these brakes left some sparks
And now the wagon's caught fire

Let's jump up on the camel's back
Not one straw there gonna break his back
Not one straw there gonna break his back
Just the weight of five short men

Let's jump up on the camel's back
Not one straw there gonna break his back
Not one straw there gonna break his back
Just the weight of six young men

The last time I saw this band before last night was probably 4-5 years ago, Mikey was still alive and the show was great. However, last night was **** ing smoking!! Perhaps its because I haven't seen them in a while, or perhaps because of two words...JIMMY **** ING HERRING!! Holy smokes. That guy can flat out bring it. Actually, the whole band I thought was on fire. Their rythm (I always spell that incorrectly) section is right up there with the ABB. Domingo, Dave and Todd can hold it down like no other. I can't even begin to recall a setlist (I will try to post one later after I clear the cobwebs). If these guys come to your town don't miss them.

I may get skewered for this, but I have to mention it. Dave Schools needs to lose well over 150 pounds. Again, perhaps I have not seen him in a while, but I was shocked at how big he got. I am not the picture of clean living, but he is getting dangerously big. I say this not to be mean, but more out of concern for him and the band. The last thing anyone wants to see is such a talented guy like that end up dead before his time. He appears to be having so much fun up there and he brings so much enjoyment to the fans, and I don't want to see that end anytime soon.

Go see this band!!

Here's the setlist from last night and it looks like a good one. A three song encore is always a good thing.

Also, I agree with you about Schools. I don't want to lose him like we lost Mikey.

Set I: Heroes > Disco > Angels on High, Smoking Factory > Fixin' To Die > Henry Parsons Died > Green Onions > Henry Parsons Died > Dark Day Program, Pigeons, Ain't Life Grand

Set II: Space Wrangler, North > Smokestack Lightning > Protein Drink/Sewing Machine, Let's Get the Show on the Road > Airplane > Papa's Home, Holden Oversoul > Conrad

Enc: Expiration Day, Pilgrims, Goin' Out West

The Smokestack Lighting was out of control as was the jam around it. I also love Pigeons....I guess they are obliged to play that in NYC!! Man they killed it. I can't stop thinking about it.

Dave is pretty huge. Jimmy is incredible, but I get incredibly bored with their drummer. A great band to see for sure though!

I love Widespread Panic. A great live act but really great songs also with really thoughtful lyrics, many written by the great Michael Houser. My all time favorite is "Pleas"

"They say it takes sorrow to let you love the joys. They say it takes poverty to let you love your toys. "

"They say it takes hardship to let you love the rest. Sometimes underneath the load is where I shine my best."

Doug, I agree. They almost reminded me of the Band the other night, just in terms of the thoughtfulness of their lyrics. Its real American music.

Not to rub anybody the wrong way here, and I was tempted to post this the other day but stopped short...And not that I have anything against J. Herring - I don't. But WSP was a GREAT band before Jimmy arrived on the scene, too.

I'm sure they're sounding great now with him playing, and would love to see them again with the current lineup. But, the other guys in the band are super-talented also IMO, and have been for quite a while. Just wanted to say that.

RIP Mikey.

I think a lot of the Spreadheads were disapointed with George McConnell and felt he was not a good replacement for Michael Houser. Generally, the consensus seems to be that Jimmy is a good replacement for Mikey. No one will ever forget that most if not all of the great music was created by and with Michael Houser.

I've been saying this around here since Jimmy joined. And to reply to dougrhon's post, I think alloak41 was posting to Peach heads, not Spreadheads. I believe alloak41 has noticed the general lack of respect that the pre-Jimmy Herring WSP has gotten on this website, as I have. There are a few around here who have come around since Jimmy joined, but you could count on one hand the WSP supporters before Jimmy. It plays to my HTW w/ABB theory that says: you're nothing until a Brother or a ABB guest plays with you (you know what I mean), see- Black Crowes w/ Luther, The Dead w/ Warren, everybody w/ Warren and now WSP w/ Jimmy.
I'll say this, Jimmy Herring is a great addition to an already great band.
